Congo Women Exhibit June 4 July 25 2010 Pittsburgh PA

Congo/Women
Traveling photo exhibition highlights beauty and strength of women and girls of the Democratic Republic of Congo
June 4 – July 25, 2010
Exhibition opens during Three Rivers Arts Festival
SPACE, 812 Liberty Avenue, Cultural District
Pittsburgh, PA
The average lifespan of a woman in the Democratic Republic of Congo is 46 years.
Congo/Women is a traveling photography exhibit highlighting the beauty and strength of the girls and women of the Democratic Republic of Congo who are currently battling an unprecedented wave of gender based violence and a lack of essential medical care. Featuring the work of Lynsey Addario, Marcus Bleasdale, Ron Haviv, and James Nachtwey the installation weaves large portraits of these women and contextual images of the culture and history of the region together into an environment which describes the full complexity of this challenge. Video and audio testimony accompanies the exhibit, allowing viewers to gain and in depth understanding of the crisis. Pregnancy as a result of rape, obstetric and traumatic fistula, HIV infection, permanent reproductive health damage, and death will be discussed, as well as the inevitable societal stresses caused by such atrocities. Curated from a combination of recently taken photography and newly commissioned work – particularly of women and girls recovering from violence – the exhibit will provide a comprehensive view of the issue and its possible solutions.
The exhibit is accompanied by a website ([BLINK: http://lists.pgharts.org/t/559088/352247/377/0/] ) which provides links to immediate actions that visitors who view the exhibit can take to provide support. In addition, visitors to the site and to the exhibition can post their own portraits on our visual petition, providing an international demonstration of the growing support that will be raised. Media attention to opening events is promoted by local connections of each institution and with the national support of human rights groups. Congo/Women can be loaned by interested venues for an affordable cost. The format is flexible and our curators will work with each institution to help them present the imagery in an appropriate fashion.
Congo/Women is co-produced by Art Works Projects and the Ellen Stone Belic Institute of the Study of Women and Gender in the Arts and Media, Columbia College Chicago. The exhibition was organized by Leslie Thomas with creative advisor Jane M. Saks.
Major support for Congo/Women has been provided by United Nations Population Fund, UNFPA, Humanity United, and Leadership Donors of the Ellen Stone Belic Institute for the Study of Women and Gender in the Arts and Media Columbia College Chicago.

Maggie Taylor and Abelardo Morell at Silver Eye Center for Photography Pittsburgh PA

"CURIOUSER AND CURIOUSER..."

Silver Eye Center for Photography brings Wonderland to Pittsburgh with two stunning exhibitions by Maggie Taylor and Abelardo Morell

PITTSBURGH, Pa. 4/22/10 - The Silver Eye Center for Photography is pleased to present exhibitions this summer by two of the most renowned and influential photographers working today - Maggie Taylor and Abelardo Morell - each highlighting a singular reinterpretation of the 150-year-old story of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.
These Strange Adventures: The Art of Maggie Taylor on view at Silver Eye's South Side Venue beginning May 14, 2010.
Maggie Taylor first exhibited her work at Silver Eye in 1995, and today, she is internationally recognized as one of the most inventive and accomplished artists working with cutting-edge digital imaging processes. This exhibition features 40 of Taylor's photo montages created from 2003 to 2009. The centerpiece is a selection of 23 works from Almost Alice: New Illustrations of Wonderland, a three-year project published to great acclaim by Modernbook Editions in 2008.

Since 1996, Maggie Taylor has been using the most advanced digital image-making tools in place of the camera and darkroom to create her fantastical work. Starting with objects that she finds on eBay or in flea markets such as old Victorian photographic portraits, Taylor scans and assembles a single image from dozens upon dozens of Photoshop layers.

"A single work may take months of experimentation and careful thought to complete and Taylor's artistry is, in short, nothing less than virtuosic," comments Ellen Fleurov, curator of the exhibition and Silver Eye's executive director. "Yet, what makes Taylor truly great is not just her technical mastery but the rich interplay between photographic veracity and illusion, the psychological tension between dreams and reality, which seems to stand at the heart of her deeply affecting and beautiful work."

These Strange Adventures: The Art of Maggie Taylor will be on view from May 14 through August 21, 2010 at the Silver Eye Center for Photography at 1015 East Carson Street in Pittsburgh's South Side. Admission is free and open to the public.

The exhibition is made possible, in part, through support from the BNY Mellon Audience Development Fund. Media sponsors are WYEP 91.3FM and Pittsburgh City Paper.
Alice's Adventures in Wonderland: Photographs by Abelardo Morell opens May 7 in the Cultural District as part of Three Rivers Arts Festival

Abelardo Morell's rethinking of the Lewis Carroll classic precedes Maggie Taylor's series by a decade and the fifteen images in the suite will be on view from May 7 through June 25, 2010 at the 709 Penn Gallery in downtown Pittsburgh's Cultural District. The exhibition is organized by the Silver Eye Center for Photography and presented by the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust Education and Community Engagement Department in association with the Three Rivers Arts Festival. Admission is free and open to the public.

Abelardo Morell's interest in the Alice story is not surprising for he has long been intrigued by the magical qualities of books and their enduring presence in our memory and history. To make his images, Morell created paper cut-outs from the original Sir John Tenniel illustrations to Alice in Wonderland and then arranged the figures into carefully constructed scenarios. These mis-en-scenes were then photographed from a variety of often disorienting perspectives with a large format view camera. The resulting images brim with a wit, delight and punning imagination that Lewis Carroll himself, a pioneering photographer, would have relished.

Gallery hours are Wednesday - Thursday (11:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m.); Friday - Saturday (11:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m.); and Sunday (11:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.). Special extended hours during the Three Rivers Arts Festival, June 4 through 13; visit www.pgharts.org for further details.

The exhibition will be open during the First Friday Gallery Crawl on June 4, 2010 from 4:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. This evening of events showcases an array of activities throughout the Cultural District and they are free and open to the public. For more information and a map of the Gallery Crawl events, visit www.pgharts.org or call 412.456.6666.

"Take A Letter" Conceived by Alexi Morrissey

Presented by the New Hazlett Theater's Artist Residence program.

3 NIGHTS ONLY

May 27th-29th 2010

Featuring Alexi Morrissey and Adrienne Wehr

Take a Letter explores issues of artistic frustration, the failures of language, and the ultimate struggles of power – over the self, and over others. Drawing on the influences of 20th-century masters such as George Orwell, T.S. Eliot, and Phillip K. Dick, the performance imagines the price of communication in the modern world, and whether or not we are willing and able to pay them.

A 8,000 lb, 20' tall, 30' wide, robotic sculpture whirls at the center of the artwork like a mad dervish. Utilizing Pittsburgh's local talent in research, computing, machining and fabrication artist Alexi Morrissey has assembled a collaborative team of world-class experts in art, theater, science and technology to dovetail all these worlds into one evening of spectacle.

New Work from Tugboat Printshop, Lawrenceville Pittsburgh PA

Check out Tugboat Printshop's newest work, Bonfire

from their website:

"BONFIRE" presents an idyllic nature-scape of ancient people joined together around the collective warmth of a blazing firepit at sunset. Lush greens, reds, oranges, and blues provide a rich, colorful backdrop to this vibrant dusk gathering."BONFIRE" serves as a reminder of a time when the struggle for survival alongside the elements was our prevailing predicament. People were different, naturally, but together they made us the societies and cultures that we are today. We all came from different incarnations of this same scenario, and are not so different from that today. "BONFIRE" made it's debut in the recent MANIFEST EQUALITY exhibition in Los Angeles, CA from March 3-7, 2010.

This is NOT a digitally reproduced print. After drawing our original designs on birch plywood, we hand-carve all the blocks (see pics below). We print the finished woodblocks through a press onto paper in our in-house printshop.

"BONFIRE" is a limited edition of 100 prints. Each print in the edition is signed, titled and numbered. Prints are packaged in clear, resealable sleeves with coroplast backing. Ready for gifting, propping up on a shelf, or safely transporting until framed!

In Memory of Pittsburgh Artist John Metzler

John Metzler was full of creative energy and it was easy to spot for the many people who had the chance to interact with him. In addition to the hours he spent on his own beautiful artworks and sculptures from reclaimed wood he was well known for working with other artists at the Urban Tree Forge as well as volunteering at Friends of the Pittsburgh Urban Forest and the work he did for the Pittsburgh Society of Sculptors. He will be sorely missed but will be easy to remember.

Scroll down to see images of John and just some of the amazing work he brought forth. Images are from Joey Kennedy, Randie Snow and the Urban Tree Forge blog.

Pittsburgh Artist Jason John, Broadstreet Studio

I came across Jason John's artwork recently online and thought it needed to be shared. He works on oil and employs incredible representational detail and couples it with the surreal.

Broadstreet will have an exhibit in October 2010 at Principle Gallery in Alexandria, Virginia.

Broadstreetstudio is interested in representational art which uses 'realism' as a means of depicting an 'unusual reality'. We explored particular themes for the exhibition, 'Between Realities', but kept coming up empty handed. As a group, Broadstreet has decided to employ the visual spectrum within which artists paint the place(s) between our ordinary, monotonous and sobering reality and the extraordinary. To Broadstreetstudio, representational is the perfect medium in which to depict the periphery where reality and unreality meet. The chosen artists have been an immense inspiration to each artist from Broadstreetstudio: Joshua Suda, Brian Martin, and Jason John.

Artist Dylan Critchfield-Sales at Gallery on 43rd Lawrenceville Pgh PA

Dylan is from Pittsburgh, Pa and is currently working on his MFA out of state. Check the above info for the exhibit.

Opening Friday May 21 7-10pm

Excerpts from Dylan's Exhibit Statement:

Painting to me is about engaging with my surroundings through the act of observation. ‘Painting is a matter of impulse. It is a matter of getting out to nature and having some joy in registering it’ (Hawthorne). It is essentially a way of translating visual sensation through use of shape, color and value. In perceptual painting there is no need for predetermined concepts or formulaic systems. It is always an attempt to convey the truth of one’s visual experience.
...

Working from simplistic subject matter allows me to focus on color and tonal relationships as well as the particular way that forms fit together within the picture plane. I think that painting at its best is about the experience of painting itself and the nature of the artist’s perception. In certain instances I have also worked from fictional sources such as Alfred Hitchcock films in order to introduce a subtle psychological aspect and to achieve somewhat antiquated aesthetic.

The work in this show spans the past two to three years. The earliest work is from my final year of undergraduate at The Maryland Institute College of Art and the latest work was done within the past few months during my first year of graduate school at Indiana University, Bloomington.

Pittsburgh Public Art Resources

The URA and the Office of Public Art have come up with a document to help with and promote contracting Pittsburgh artists for commissioning small and large scale works of art. As mentioned in the guide public art doesn't always need to mean sculptures but can also be 2 dimensional works of art to be displayed inside of buildings.

The Pittsburgh Office of Public Art has published a new document titled, “Add Value Add Art” The document billed as a, “public art resource guide for developers,” was produced at the request of Urban Redevelopment Authority which wanted to help promote public art in new developments around town.

The document can be found at the URA web site.

A list of local Pitttsburgh artists can be found here.

Pittsburgh Power Flower News Art and Green Technology

Visionary Pittsburgh artist David Edwards has been busy with the Power Flowers. He recently won an award for creativity from the Pgh Tech Council and has been educating local students and the general population with the Power Flowers.

Two Power Flowers will be at the 3 Rivers Arts Festival for the duration of the 10 days from June 4-13, 2010.

From David Edwards:

The Power Flower is a 12' wind driven kinetic sculpture in the form of a potted sunflower. Sun and wind energy are collected with a wind turbine driven by spinning flower petals and photo voltaic solar film leaf surfaces. A 55 gallon rainwater collector serves as base and ballast. The flower provides DC power for laptops, phones or water pump features. The sculpture also powers colored LED lighting for dynamic night illumination. A weather-proof controller maintains safe power levels and timed programmable lighting. The sculpture is transportable and sets up easily for events and exhibitions. Our sculptures are created for use by city art festivals, botanical associations, schools and museums to complement their missions. We design, sell and implement both permanent eco-artworks and transportable designs and workshops.

Deborah Hosking at Chatham, an MFA Thesis video installation

Deborah Hosking at Chatham, an MFA Thesis video installation

Memento was conceived as a synthesis of Hudson River School and Chinese brush painting traditions and new media: Catskill landscapes meet Oriental scrolls meet digital video. The video imagery was shot entirely in one area and edited into short, montaged pieces, with compositions and a unique aspect ratio reminiscent of hanging scrolls. Each composition is created with imagery from neighboring locations or multiple views of the same location. Local geography provides the contextual framework and interactive map navigation. Memento is about a place, but it is also about time — a time past, time passing, time fleeting and time eternal.

Also showing will be MakeUp, a 10-minute, single channel video shot with the camera behind a two-way mirror. Every morning each of us looks into the mirror and makes choices about our appearance. What do these choices mean? What do they convey to others? MakeUp is about nature and artifice, image and self-image, perception and preconception.

Selected pieces from One Hand Clapping will also be on display. One Hand Clapping is an ongoing, internet-based photography series, as well as an open dialog with recipients of the images. The inclusion of their responses in the show is an homage to the tradition of Chinese calligraphers and poets commenting on paintings’ imagery as a part of the works themselves.

Art Dimensions

from their website:

About ArtDimensions

ArtDimensions Pittsburgh’s organizational mission is to help local artists make money from their works. Go to the Artists section to buy artwork. We support visual, performing, and media artists through our memberships. Members get marketing and sales support from ArtD's leadership. ArtD collaborates with nonprofit organizations to teach current artists about artistic techniques and business survival skills. Our favorite part though . . . is encouraging the general public to discover and celebrate local artists, they are the best neighbors.

The story of ArtDimensions Pittsburgh started from a community conversation between Friendship Development Associates, Inc., East Liberty Development, Inc. and local artist Susan Wagner in February, 2008. Dan Friedson moved to Pittsburgh a few years before to start a Community Economic Development Clinic at the University of Pittsburgh School of Law. Asked to come to this meeting by Friendship Arts District Manager, Matt Galluzzo, the question was, "How do we support the 400 artists living in the East End of Pittsburgh?"

After relating his experiences with ArtDimensions St. Louis. A few months later, East Liberty Development, Inc. offered Dan Friedson a former bank building on Penn Avenue and Highland to reclaim for arts entrepreneurship programming.

October, 2008, Friedson sponsored founders of ArtDimensions St. Louis, Davide Weaver and his then pregnant wife, Gina, to fly to Pittsburgh to create a Euphony Lounge in the former bank vault of the East Liberty PNC Bank. With only one week to gather supplies, tools, plan and build, the task seemed unattainable.

The vault itself was made of concrete; ceiling-to-floor, wall-to-wall. Davide built a wooden frame as an exoskeleton and began planning themes for the room the night of arrival.

Spray-painting the vault-walls with words, "Law, Politics, Technology, Music, Sex, Death, Love, Religion" we sat, scratching our heads . . . where were we going to get enough material to transform the vault with these themes, and oh yeah ... we absolutely needed some retro-furniture. Susan Wagner heeded our call and came through like our very own Fairy-God-Mother.

A week later, the Euphony Lounge was built, it's creators high on hot glue and paint fumes, but mostly on pride of a job-well-done. The Pittsburgh artists were drawn to the installation.

In St. Louis, experience taught us that the core group is what mattered, not the bricks-and-mortar. Enter Sean O'Donnell and Kahmeela Adams.

Sean O'Donnell is a Pittsburgh singer-songwriter, literary publisher, bag-pipe playing soldier-of-the-arts. From Day-1, Sean was at 6000 Penn Avenue to clean, paint, re-paint, and then recruit someone else to paint. His volunteerism, unsurpassable . . . without Sean, ArtD Pittsburgh would have been impossible. He recruited most of the talent for our first roof raiser in October of 2008. His band, Truth In Advertising fills us with laughter, his publishing company, Ophelia Street keeps us thinking, his dedication keeps us going.

Kahmeela Adams happened upon the Euphony Loounge in Pittsburgh while we were looking for material to complete the "Love Room" in the Euphony Lounge. Lucky for us, she recently completed a series of modern pin-up photography. About a month later she showed up with a wall-full of photos and has since provided much needed level-headed leadership. Without Kahmeela, ArtD Pittsburgh would have been improbable. Organizing artists is like herding cats, and Kahmeela has just the right magic.

Inspired to be multi-metropolitian, Sean, Kahmeela and Dan decided to reach out to Davide and ArtDimensions St. Louis . . . instead of re-creating the wheel, we duplicated it and ArtDimensions Pittsburgh was born.

This website will exhibit local artists and ArtDimensions members from other cities, like St. Louis where it all began. The group produces periodic new exhibits and shows. Any one interested in becoming a member in ArtDimensions of Pittsburgh please check out our membership form located on our site.

ArtDimensions Pittsburgh has a leadership team, The Roundtable Artists, who dedicate time, expertise and funds to transforming formerly neglected buildings into productive space for ArtDimensions members and their respective communities. The Roundtable Artists also manage the facilities, administer educational programs and organize new exhibits and shows once every two months. Roundtable Artists are distinguished by their volunteerism and stewardship.
