surface and rigor at mendelson gallery, mark gualtieri, will giannotti, rick byerly

Planetary Host, Rick Byerly

Update: Rick Byerly's texture images from utah are located here.

In the over 3 years I've done this blog I've rarely plugged what I'm doing (save some ads a few years back). Well, I'm gonna shout this one from the rooftops since it's the first exhibit I'll be in since over a year (and will continue to hold back what I exhibit and show in general.)

Scale: November 19 - February 6, 2011, at SPACE, Heidi Tucker

don't miss the exhibit at SPACE in downtown pittsburgh. particularly enjoy seeing heidi tucker's work which is shown above

show info below:

November 19 - February 6, 2011, at SPACE
Opening November 19th 6-9pm.

SPACE gallery, a project of The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, presents the visual arts exhibition ''Scale'' with guest Curator Ally Reeves, from November 19, 2010 through February 6, 2011. Ally Reeves, published art critic, Fulbright recipient and MFA from Carnegie Mellon University, is looking to integrate artist's practices with the concerns of the current economic times.

Artists featured in this exhibit are sculptor Derk Wolmuth who's functional shower is built from almost 80 percent salvaged materials, Guffey Hollow a mysterious east coast speakeasy, Bill Daniel a filmmaker, drifter, and transient anthropologist, Gordon Kirkwood whose work makes use of salvaged wood and lasers, Heidi Tucker and Caleb Gamble who sell both prints and tamales, and Teresa Foley who's gleaned Craigslist images and given them a second life as wearable merchandise.

This exhibit also features a project of Mark Dixon, Invisible with a musical performance on Feb.5th.

Scale's artists explore the current and coming years of economic change which are forcing the world to reconsider definitions of lifestyle. What new practices, images, and modes of creativity will emerge as others become expensive, exclusive, or impractical? How will society communicate and share?

''Scale'' seeks to envision new ways society can live, work, and create. Artists will showcase their models and visions for work, play, and living in a world where creativity has become an everyday necessity and even a survival technique. Featured artists make use of items that come at a low cost, provide efficiency, or are surprisingly durable as a means to meet both basic necessity and fuel creative passions.

Guest Curator Ally Reeves is a recognized visual artist with over ten years of experience and an active exhibit history. Currently an Adjunct Professor of Fine Art at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh, PA. Reeves works with the Coleman Center for the Arts with the One Mile Garden project and was previously the artist in residence at the Pittsburgh Jewish Community Center. Reeves was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to India in 2009-2010.

SPACE gallery, a project of The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, is located at 812 Liberty Avenue, downtown Pittsburgh Cultural District. Gallery Hours: Wed and Thurs: 11 a.m. - 6 p.m.; Fri and Sat: 11 a.m. - 8 p.m. Free and open to the public. Information: www.pgharts.org

Pittsburgh Center for the Arts Announces Expanded 2011 Biennial with Warhol, Carnegie Museum of Art and CMU’s Miller Gallery

Pittsburgh Center for the Arts Announces Expanded 2011 Biennial with Warhol, Carnegie Museum of Art and CMU’s Miller Gallery

December 9, 2010

(Pittsburgh, PA) – The Pittsburgh Biennial, a signature exhibition for Pittsburgh Filmmakers/Pittsburgh Center for the Arts since 1994, will expand in scope and location in 2011. Setting a new precedent of collaboration among major art institutions in Pittsburgh, the exhibit will be co-presented and co-curated by The Andy Warhol Museum, Carnegie Museum of Art, The Miller Gallery at Carnegie Mellon University, and Pittsburgh Filmmakers/Pittsburgh Center for the Arts (PF/PCA).

“This unique collaboration among these organizations builds on the open exchange of ideas as well as the collaborative atmosphere PF/PCA cultivates,” says Laura Domencic, Director of Pittsburgh Center for the Arts. “These organizations have stepped outside of their regular programming to focus on the creative energy of Pittsburgh artists. They bring their valuable perspectives and resources, as well as a heightened recognition of our region’s most compelling visual artists.”

The Biennial will consist of distinct exhibitions which reflect each curator’s and partner institution’s engagement with artists working in Pittsburgh. The curatorial team is comprised of Eric Shiner, The Milton Fine Curator of Art at The Warhol; Dan Byers, Associate Curator of Contemporary Art at Carnegie Museum of Art; Astria Suparak, Curator and Director of The Miller Gallery at Carnegie Mellon University; and Adam Welch, Curator of Pittsburgh Filmmakers/Pittsburgh Center for the Arts.

Starting next summer, the 2011 Pittsburgh Biennial will have monthly receptions that will revolve to each of the partner institutions. The Pittsburgh Biennial will open at Pittsburgh Filmmakers/Pittsburgh Center for the Arts on June 10 and be on view through October 23. It will open at Carnegie Museum of Art in June and be on view through mid-September. The second half of the Biennial will open in the fall at the Miller Gallery at CMU and at The Warhol.

“I am very much looking forward to working with my colleagues at some of the city’s finest art venues. It is nothing less than exciting to work with so many talented contemporary artists that live and work—or once did—in Pittsburgh,” says Eric Shiner of The Warhol. “We are quickly becoming one of the most dynamic art communities in America, and the Pittsburgh Biennial is going to prove that Pittsburgh is a place that cherishes and supports the arts.”

Ben Matthews Mendelson Gallery, Pittsburgh Pa

Ben Matthews returns to Mendelson Gallery with a new collection of his unique work. Ben's paintings open a window into a parallel universe of medicine show cures, carnival attractions, and weird products that are fantastical and a bit unsettling.

As Ben himself says:

"Working in a poster format I try to give the impression that my paintings have already served their purpose. They are documentations of people, places, events, products, and moments in time that did, did not, or will exist."

Join us this Thursday, December 9th from 6-9 pm for a glimpse into the strange world of Pittsburgh's own Ben Matthews.

Show runs through January 15th, 2011
