I'm opening a bookstore in the old Red Star Ironworks garage at 4810 Penn Avenue. We're starting out with 3400 books, and there'll be plenty more on the way, courtesy of Robert Richards of Riverrun Books (formerly of Carson St., now in Greensboro, PA). Lots of art and music books, sciences, sports, some poetry videos, hunting, fishing, philosophy, literature, history, ephemera, you name it. EVERYTHING IS 50% OFF THE LISTED PRICE!!!

Hours are Saturdays from noon til 5 pm.

There will also be a painting party for the Pittsburgh Beautification Project. Kids are welcome. Open from 7 pm till midnite.

Pittsburgh Army of Artist Space: Artists who need space

I have finally finalized the deal for the Army of Artist Space and it is now time to take action. This space is for artists and photographers.

For all the new members that are not aware of the AOA space deal, here it is:
I have been working for over a year to find space for artists and photographers and have been negotiating a deal for space in the strip. I chose the strip because of its convenient location and it is really the center of Pittsburgh. The space is large enough to house plenty of AOA members. I was looking at two options for how we could afford the space and here is what I came up with. We can either have a group of 15 of us at $100.00 a month or 30 of us at $50.00 a month. Personally I am for 15 members. We would all be required to pay a $100 security deposit. The space is completely open so there will not be personal spaces, I really can not see this being an issue. We are a collaborative group and I want it to be open space. If you are looking for personal space this is not the space for you. The space is newly remolded and very clean - this is a great deal and I would like to get this for all of us.

If you are interested I need you to be 100% serious and I need you to call me at 412-853-4932. Please, no emails because it gets to be to much and time consuming.

Space Details:
2300 square feet, High ceilings, hardwood floors, steel security door, 24 hour access, security code access, heating and air-conditioning, bathroom, sink, lighting, electrical outlets, plenty of parking.

Rental requirements:
$100 each dollar deposit, $750 a month rent plus utilities (the utilities will only be $5 to $10 a month extra per person) for first three months then $1500 a month there after. Everyone will need to sign a one year contract.

Option two: 30 members $50 a month

The Zombo Gallery now opens its door to local fashion designers and clothing collectors.

On Thursday, November 12th at 6pm, The Zombo Gallery located at 4900 Hatfield St.15201 in the Lawrenceville section of Pgh, will open, "The Wear It Clothing Company".

It will feature affordable, retro and locally designed men's and women's clothing and accessories by a variety of local designers and collectors.

It will expand the gallery operations in two huge ways, 1. Naturally, adding clothing. But more importantly, 2. Giving us regular hours.

Free food and booze at the openings!

All current show artwork will remain on display during store hours. The racks will be wheeled out for art opening and closing receptions.

The new hours will be:
Wed-Saturday 1pm-7pm and Sundays 1pm-5pm.

Acclaimed regional artist, Ron Nigro demonstrates pure dedication to his craft with an obsessive fire. He combines beautiful mechanisms of our everyday appliances and computers giving them new life framed within wood and metal. Influences come from architecture, religion and fantasy and play with the viewer's perception. Are these works of the future or relics from the past?

Mr. Nigro's most recent awards include Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council (2009) Nomination for Art & Technology Award for the The Work of Arts Awards - Let your art out! Pittsburgh Technology Council, 15 Minutes Gallery in Pittsburgh, 2009 Merit Award and 2008 Sculpture Award. Art Institute of Pittsburgh, 2009 Award, Best of Show; 2008 Third Place. And his most recent solo exhibition was held at the Hoyt Institute of Fine Arts, New Castle, PA 2008.

Pittsburgh Playwrights Theatre Company presents the local premiere of
The Revenants, an original horror drama by Scott T. Barsotti at its
Downtown Cultural District performance space, 542 Penn Avenue at Sixth
Street, Pittsburgh PA 15222, in the Jackman Building (the parking
garage across from Heinz Hall, above Starbucks.) Performance dates
are October 16 - 31, 2009, Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00 PM and 11:00
PM. Two additional performances will be added during the run’s final
week on Wednesday, October 28 and Thursday, October 29 at 8:00 PM.
Tickets are $17.50 general admission, or $35.00 for the October 31
11:00 PM performance, which will include a gala costume reception
featuring surprise special guests.

The Revenants honors the long-cherished traditions of Pittsburgh’s
rich zombie heritage as two young couples become barricaded in a
suburban basement during a violent uprising of the living dead. As
supplies run low and hopes dwindle, it is revealed that two of the
spouses are infected and getting... hungry. Faced with the true
meaning of commitment, husbands and wives must ask of each other: When
does love die?

Born and raised in Pittsburgh’s North Hills, Scott T. Barsotti is now
based in Chicago. His plays have been presented in Chicago, New York,
and New Orleans, and have been seen at the New York International
Fringe Festival, and The Rhinoceros Theater Festival. Mr. Barsotti is
a company member of Curious Theatre Branch and WildClaw Theatre, as
well as an Artistic Associate of Illegal Drama and Collaboraction. He
has an MFA in Writing from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago,
and was recently honored as a Resident Playwright at Chicago
Dramatists. PPTCO’s production of The Revenants marks his Pittsburgh
debut.

Produced by PPTCO founder and Artistic Director Mark Clayton
Southers, The Revenants features actors Makeda Duncan-Parker, Todd
Betker, David Conley, and Valentina Benrexi. Recently named PPTCO
Artistic Associate Mark Whitehead serves as Director and Sound
Designer. Special Visual Effects are crafted by nationally acclaimed
FX wizard Steve Tolin. Other design and crew personnel include
Raymond “Chang” James (Set Design and Construction), Eric Smith
(Lights), James Edwards (Props), Cheryl El-Walker (Costumes and

Mox Box Consulting, a Pittsburgh-based arts management and consulting partnership, calls its exhibit Urbanic 2: Catalyzing a Regional Economic Renaissance. It features the art of ten Pittsburgh artists working in a variety of media, all with a uniquely visionary approach to community city life. This exhibit is located in display cases on the south end of the ticketing level of the landside terminal.

“Each artist’s immediate experience comes from living in Pittsburgh, and through abstracted form, the artists document where Pittsburgh has been and where it is going. Here it is, October already. Time for the annual Orange Galloons Open Studio! Susan Constanse and Christine Bethea share a studio space in Bloomfield. The studio, generally not open to the public, will host other artists in the space. Michelle Gregio and Laurenty Josep will be joining us for the day.

Susan Constanse is a painter. Her studio presentation will include a range of works from early series as well as new paintings and works on paper. Christine Bethea works primarily with salvaged materials. Some of her masks will be available during the open studio. Laurenty Josep will have some of his amazing digital works and Michelle Gregio will be presenting some small sculptures.

How do you find us? We are near the Bloomfield end of the Bloomfield Bridge, next door to Iron Eden and across the street from Paul Lumber. Look for the orange balloons!

Artist Charles Pitcher Memorial Sunday October 11 2009 3rd St Gallery

The amazingly talented watercolor artist Charles Pitcher passed away on Saturday, October 3, 2009. The Memorial and Celebration for Charlie Pitcher will be on Sunday, Oct. 11, 2009 at the 3rd Street Gallery, 220 Third Street, Carnegie PA, from 2-4 p.m.

His watercolors almost defied reason as their details appeared more real and alive than any photograph or painting could come close to.

Before the G20 shenanigans I got a chance to drop by 3G Gallery downtown when I was dropping off a print for the Planned Parenthood fundraiser and I met co-owner Coleen Rush. It's a nice space located within the Westin Hotel and runs the gamut as far as mediums of art and crafts. I bought a really cool art mug which I had no business buying considering I don't have a place to live right now but still glad I did anyways. They have been in business for 2 years (owned by 3 generations of a family) and I hope to see them down the road in Pgh.

The first comprehensive look at his extensive career that spanned nearly five decades, Body of Work surveys Pittsburgh artist and teacher Philip Mendlow. Drawn from his personal collection, the work in the exhibit represents the breadth of Mendlow's creative output. Revealing the connections and differences in his two and three-dimensional forms the exhibit comprises approximately 50 paintings, works on paper and sculptures.

Philip Mendlow was born in Pittsburgh in 1933. After earning a B.F.A. from (then) Carnegie Institute of Technology in 1954, he served in Paris, France, in the United States Army during the Korean War. Upon his discharge, he stayed in Paris, studying printmaking at the venerable William Stanley Hayter’s Atelier 17 and painting and art history at the University of Paris, Sorbonne. He traveled extensively throughout Europe, exploring the Loire Valley, Barcelona and the Balearic Islands. Returning to Pittsburgh in 1958 he established a career as an arts educator, teaching drawing and painting, and later becoming the academic dean of the Ivy School of Professional Art. After the school’s 1980 closure he continued teaching art at La Roche College, Carlow University, Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh as well as Pittsburgh’s Creative and Performing Arts High School (CAPA).

Mendlow exhibited widely throughout the sixties and seventies throughout Pittsburgh and Western Pennsylvania, and his sculptures are in numerous private and museum collections. Although in his later years he concentrated on teaching and caring for his wife, he continued his artistic pursuits, experimenting with new styles and developing new bodies of work. Mendlow was also involved with area arts organizations, including the Associated Artists of Pittsburgh, the Pittsburgh Society of Sculptors, and Western Pennsylvania Regional Scholastics, where he served in lay leadership capacities. He died in Pittsburgh, in November 2007.

Innovation Lives at PTC's 15 Minutes Gallery

From the polio vaccine and the pull-tab can to the Ferris Wheel and the air brake, Pittsburgh has long been a city of innovative firsts and ingenuous inventions. This week, as the whole world is watching, a new exhibition explores and celebrates the city's 21st-century drive, spirit and creativity via the work of local artists. Aptly called Innovation Lives Here: A New Generation of Pittsburgh, the new exhibition showcases work by 20 artists at the Pittsburgh Technology Council's (PTC) 15 Minutes Gallery, one of the latest cultural venues to emerge within the city's thriving arts scene.

On view through January 21, 2010, the dynamic collection features work from a staggering variety of media, from the traditional to the cutting edge, and reflects the diverse modes, media and practices employed by our region's artists. Visitors to Innovation Lives Here: will have the opportunity to view fabric art alongside robotic installations and oil paintings displayed with gigapan technology. Featured artists in the PTC's special G-20 show include Francis Crisafio, Zheng Yang, Ron Nigro, Alan Byrne, Kaoru Tohara, Rick Byerly, Ruth Hendricks, and Sandy Kessler.

The PTC's 15 Minutes Gallery is open to the public during the G-20 Summit from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., as well as on weekdays through January 21, 2010.

The Academy of the South Side new space free open model session

good news, academy of the south side has relocated:

Hi everyone,

We are thrilled to announce that we are having a free open model session this week and it will be the first event in our new studio! We have moved into the old St. Michael's school building on Pius Street in the South Side slopes. The school is owned by the Veronica's Veil Players, a non profit community theater group, and we're really excited to be sharing their beautiful space. The address is 44 Pius St., Pittsburgh, PA 15203, and directions are below (it's really simple).

The session will be tomorrow, Tuesday, September 22nd, from 7-10.

Directions to the new studio, from Carson Street on the South Side:
Turn up 18th St. (right off Carson if you're coming from Station Square, left off Carson if you're coming from the South Side Works)
Once you're going up the hill, make first right at the light, on Pius St.
Travel just under 1/3 of a mile, and the school will be on your left.

Make a sharp turn left up the driveway (there's a Howard Hanna real estate sign on the retaining wall of the driveway), and continue straight to the parking lot. After you park, just walk back toward the group of 3 old church school buildings - it is the middle building of the 3, and the entrance to our studio is on the ground level before the main entry staircase. We will have someone waiting on Pius to direct cars up the driveway, as well as at the Brew House in case anyone shows up to the old studio. See attached pictures for a map and image of the building.

We are really excited about this new studio and the step it represents for The Academy. We would like to sincerely thank you all for your patience and support. Thanks also to Geof from the SSLDC, Don from Carlson and McGinley Real Estate, and Denny and Dennis of Veronica's Veil Players for their tremendous assistance in helping us to get this new studio so quickly.

We hope to have you out on Tuesday to help us break in the new studio in anticipation of the Fall Term!
