Art All Night Still Goin On Until Sunday 2PM, Volunteers Needed As Well

If you're reading this in time there's still a chance to see a ton of art at Art All Night. Sunday 2pm is when tear down happens so you can also volunteer to help out with that as well. Located on 57th Street in Upper Lawrenceville. Just turn onto 57th street towards the river and you'll find it.

For 11 years all-volunteer efforts have brought forth Art All Night to Pittsburgh. From art registration, to preparing frames to then be hung, children's activity work, food and beverage, parking, sound system work and many other aspects hundreds of volunteers kicked in. The volunteer organizers spent 12 weeks of work prior to this night to make it happen. Don't miss out on the art and in being a part of making it happen next time.

Art All Night 2008 Don't Miss It Saturday April 26 Pittsburgh Art

Lawrenceville Art All Night 2008 –Bigger, Better and Greener Than Ever

PITTSBURGH, PA – Lawrenceville Art All Night—an annual celebration of arts, community and creativity—is back for its 11th straight year. Mark your calendars for April 26 and 27, as this year’sevent is bigger, better and greener than ever. The 24-hour arts marathon is one of Pittsburgh's mostpopular arts events, gaining a cult-like following since its inception over a decade ago.“ As a show, Art All Night is a unique compilation of character and creativity. As an event, it is a thrill beyond extreme sport. As a volunteer, it is a connection way beyond ourselves. And, as a community, it is truly fulfilling,” says Chris Hollingshead, who is spearheading Art All Night 2008.

“One night and one night only, don't miss it!” Part of the fun each year is the location of the event. This year, Art All Night takes place at the soon to-be-demolished, former Roomful Express warehouse at #2 57th Street in Lawrenceville. (Turn off of Butler Street on 57th and head towards the river.) Admission is FREE, and the event is open to the public from 6 pm (April 26) through 2 pm (April 27).

Last year, Art All Night featured work by more than 800 artists and was attended by upwards of 7,500 guests. The event also features live music, interactive arts activities for children and adults, performance artists and more. WYEP-FM will be broadcasting live from Art All Night. This year, the organizing team has committed to greening the event in order to reduce Art All Night’s carbon footprint. Concerted measures are being implemented to reduce waste, save energy and promote environmental sustainability. Bike Pittsburgh, a local bicycle advocacy group, will be on siteto provide a free “Bike Valet Service” to guests arriving on bicycles. The Port Authority will be helping to promote the use of public transportation. In addition, printed postcards will not be mailed to previous Art All Night exhibitors. Instead, artists will be notified via e-mail or from personal telephone calls from Art All Night volunteers. And, to further celebrate Art All Night's "green" theme, Lawrenceville's own Joann Kielar, a visual artist/ puppeteer/ storyteller, will be offering a recycled activity everyone will enjoy. Daviea Davis, aka“The Mosaic Lady,” will be guiding a continually changing, lighted mosaic project utilizing recycled glass, and Velma Parker will be transforming recycled newspaper into amazing, embellished hats for Art All Night attendees to enjoy and wear.

Lawrenceville Art All Night offers every artist of any skill level the opportunity to showcase one pieceof artwork in the exhibit: no fees, no jury, no censorship.Artist registration instructions are available at http://www.artallnight.org/. Artists submitting visual art pieces must show a photo ID during both registration and pickup. All artwork must arrive ready to hang or bedisplayed.

Onsite registration is on Saturday, April 26, from 1 pm to 4 pm, and art pickup is Sunday,April 27, from 2 pm to 4 pm.Lawrenceville Art All Night is planned and coordinated by an all-volunteer organizing committee comprised of residents and supporters of Pittsburgh’s vibrant Lawrenceville neighborhood. Scores of additional volunteers help to prepare the venue, construct exhibit panels, assist with registration, hangartwork and much, much more. The event is supported through the generous donations of local businesses and organizations and voluntary attendee contributions. This year’s sponsors include Lawrenceville Corporation, WYEP-FM and Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh. To learn more about the event, including how to register artwork and how to get involved as a donoror volunteer, visit http://www.artallnight.org/.

Peter Calaboyias’ Silver Grid Wall Pittsburgh Airport Public Art

Peter Calaboyias’ statement in defense of not removing the Silver Grid Wall, from the airside terminal at the Pittsburgh International airport:

This work has been the topic of an important political issue relevant to artists and their work. Please take a moment to read his argument in favor of keeping the work in place.

As you may know by now, the Allegheny County Airport Authority is planning on removing the Silver Grid Wall from its site location at the airside terminal. This work was funded by public funds and designed specifically for the wall above the escalators.

The main issue here is the removal of a specific site sculpture for the purpose of reusing the space to gain revenue from commercial advertising. Public sculpture can always be removed and relocated for many reasons. Case in point was the removal of four sculptures in the 1980’s at the Carnegie Library, Squirrel Hill Branch, for building expansion. The works were dumped and forgotten in a city warehouse. These have since been found and will be refurbished and relocated in city parks.

This may be the first time that any city, county, state or federal government will remove a specific site work and to then reuse the site for commercial gain. It will happen right here in Allegheny County and the removal has been approved by our Allegheny County Executive director.

It brings attention to a compelling argument not to remove any publicly funded site specific works by government for the sole purpose of gaining additional revenue by selling the space to advertisers. One can see that commissioned works now occupying valuable real estate in the city and county may be in danger of removal for similar reason. I would ask of you to send an e-mail to Dan Onorato expressing your thoughts to keep the sculpture at the airport.

E-mail address of Dan Onorato:
executive@county.allegheny.pa.us

We hope you will voice your support not to remove work for the reason stated.

Planet Art Gallery: Robert Strovers Photography May 17 2008 Mt Lebanon Pittsburgh PA

New Works from Photographer Robert Strovers
May 17 - 31, 2008
Opening Reception May 17 from 6:00-9:00pm

Venue: Planet Art Gallery
632 Washington Rd
Mt. Lebanon, PA 15228
412-343-3808
www.planetartgallery.com

Color and black and white photographs taken in Pittsburgh and beyond.
Creatively, Robert Strovers' early interests were focused on drawing and sketching. It's clear that imagery and composition, as well as texture and detail were all integral components of his art.

The passing of Rob's brother, who was a serious amateur photographer, resulted in his inheritance of his gear and a strong interest in photography as creative outlet.

Robert Strovers Statement:
I’m often asked, “How did you see that?” or “Why did you think that would be interesting!?”…my answer is part of my philosophy - I believe that there are many, many things that can catch ones eye, but too often we see without actually stopping to really look and look without actually seeing what is there. Photographically, my primary interests are in still life – flora, fauna and the natural world are areas I love to explore but my passion lies with the cityscape and all it offers – architecture, architectural detail, bridges, industry and industrial details - areas rife with texture, color and contrast, full of opportunity and subject matter to capture and share with others.

Robert Strovers work can also be seen on the 2008 Town Planner Calendar for Pittsburgh South communities.

Mattress Factory: Inner Outer Space April 25 2008

OPENING RECEPTION: Friday, April 25, 2008 6:00 PM - 9:00 PM $10.00 (FREE for members)

Nine contemporary artists will break new ground – metaphorically and physically – in an upcoming exhibition that will test the limitations and possibilities of the Mattress Factory’s galleries. Inner and Outer Space, organized by New York-based independent curator Dara Meyers-Kingsley, will open on April 25, 2008 and continue through January 11, 2009.

The artists, who hail from six countries, include Luca Buvoli, Daniel Canogar, David Ellis, Mark Garry, Yumi Kori, Sarah Oppenheimer, Tavares Strachan, Allison Smith, and Mary Temple.

The installations will defy the two-dimensional surfaces of each gallery by penetrating the walls and floors, offering new perceptions of “actual” space – rupturing notions of “here” and “now.” Collectively, these artists’ works employ a great variety of materials, from hand-made crafts to fiber optics, from painting to electronic projection, from simple string to advanced robotics.

Many have taken the Mattress Factory’s permanent installations, notably those by James Turrell and Yayoi Kusama that share the building, as inspiration.

Inner and Outer Space includes projects that investigate the personal and collective experience of time and space; the experience of travel and flight, gravity and speed, and visual and sensory perception. The works illuminate the interplay of relationships that coexist between the private/interior, public/exterior, social/political and human/natural/cosmic realms.

The Mattress Factory is located at 500 Sampsonia Way.The Museum parking lot is located at 505 Jacksonia Street.

The Mattress Factory is a museum of contemporary artthat exhibits room-sized works called installations. Createdon site by artists from across the country and around theworld, our unique exhibitions feature a variety of media that engage all of the senses.

The Museum's unusual galleries are located in two creatively reused buildings on Pittsburgh’s historic North Side. Both buildings house a growing-and distinctive- permanent collection, featuringartists James Turrell, Yayoi Kusama, Winifred Lutz and Rolf Julius, as well as innovative exhibitions that change throughout the year.Since 1977, the Mattress Factory has supported over 300 artists through our world-renowned residency program. Each year artists come to Pittsburgh, live at the museum, and create new work. During their time here, the museum supports themcompletely while they experiment, take risks, and explore thecreative process. Each exhibition is paired with a variety of engaging andinventive educational programs including hands-on art projects, workshops, lectures, and tours. The Mattress Factory encourages all viewers, regardless of their background, todiscover connections between art, creativity and theireveryday lives.

Pittsburgh Native Susie Shapira's Project: Kenya's Displaced

Learn about and see Pittsburgh native Susie Shapira's recently completed profound multimedia project on Kenya's displaced here. Her work was recently picked up by Sipa Press. Her photojournalism and photography website is www.susieshapira.com .

From Susie Shapira:

Kenya’s Displaced
April 2008

Over 350,000 people have been internally displaced in Kenya since the massive outbreak of violence following the widely contested Presidential elections on December 27th, 2007. They have been living in cramped and ill-equipped refugee camps, churches, and with anyone who will offer them shelter and security. With the onset of the rainy season, conditions that were difficult have now become unbearable, but the refugees have no alternative but to wait on a government that has neglected to address their situation. Now that President Mwai Kibake and Prime Minister Raila Odinga have established their power-sharing agreement, there is hope that they will turn their attention to the needs of their people.
