Manchester Craftsmen’s Guild (MCG) Youth & Arts is thrilled to present a project by our first group of Arts Leadership and Public Service (ALPS) interns: From Violence to Vision. On view through July 6 at MCG’s satellite gallery—MCG@800 Penn Avenue—the exhibition includes works across media, created by ALPS interns, as well as a silent auction of exhibition pieces and sale of student-designed advocacy pins.
Join us for a free, public benefit reception on Friday, June 20, 5:30-8 p.m. at the Penn Avenue gallery. The event will offer an opportunity to meet students featured in the show as well as kick-off the silent auction, which will runthrough the end of the exhibition. Advocacy pins will also be available for purchase and food and refreshments will be served!A portion of all proceeds made during the exhibition will go to the Center for Victims of Violence and Crime (CVVC).
One of eight ALPS interns with work in the exhibition, Adriane Hairston, a rising senior at CAPA high school, is excited to participate in activism through art for her first time: “As a group, we [ALPS interns] decided to addressviolence through this exhibition because it is an issue that has affected all of us, despite our various backgrounds andexperiences. I decided to include my painting, Fruit Nancy, because I felt it was a strong piece with a chance to raisemoney for a good cause. I really hope that our efforts will positively impact someone’s life and set the stage for me tocontribute to similar benefits in the future.”
Over the course of the past academic year, the ALPS interns have shown remarkable commitment to their responsibilities. MCG is proud to see From Violence to Vision come together as the result of their plans to confront a social issuethrough a charitable initiative.
Supported by a grant from the New York-based Surdna Foundation, the ALPS internship is part of MCG’s Apprenticeship Training Program after-school arts courses. This stipended experience requires that students maintain a “C” average inschool and contribute 8 hours a week to MCG while engaging in learning skills for future success like peer leadership, portfolio development and community activism.
Widely considered Allegheny County’s most comprehensive organization committed to helping victims of and preventingviolent crime, CVVC is a not-for-profit specializing in advocacy, crisis intervention, counseling and community education.
