Zombo Gallery events and announcement

Hey All..it's been a while, and here's the skinny.

First off, we are still very active in cool events outside of Zombo Gallery.
Tonight, is Sinferno (Happens monthly, more info here). Our amazing multifaceted performance and dance party night at Club Cattivo (146 44th in Lawrenceville). It's two floors of wild performance art/bands and two floors of killer djs (Zombo is djing the first floor). And it's only $5 to get in.

Next Tuesday, the 30th is our Amazingly Cool Art/Music Exchange at Perk Me Up coffee house on Butler St in Lawrenceville. Artist/musicians can bring any form of their craft and put it on display and then Zombo djs and hosts a fun game like atmosphere where the participants get to swap their art or music. It starts at 7pm and the trading starts around 8:30pm. and It's Free!

Then on Monday, December 6th at Arsenal Lanes in Lawrenceville, Zombo unleashes his "Anything Goes Open Mic Night". The stage is yours for music (we will have a full band set up courtesy of Backstage Guitars), Comedy or performance art. It's $8 to get in..but that gives you unlimited bowling for the whole evening! It starts at 9pm and goes till Midnight! It may be a monthly or weekly event depending on the turnout.

Ok now the Zombo Gallery news. We closed in early September due to the fact we feel it was time to move on. Months of low attendance, little or no sales per month and the clothing store just didn't have the proper foot traffic. So now we are looking for renters. It would make the ideal cool office space, studio or retail space. We feel it's a bargain at $650 a month and that includes utilities and a one year lease. Our space is 600 square feet on the corner of 49th and Hatfield in Lawrenceville. It will have a 100 sq foot break room area and access to a bathroom. Or if you would like it for a day for a laid back party, baby shower, business meeting or one day art show. The price is $250 for the whole day. I could even dj at a bargain price of $50.

So that's all for now..thanks to all.

Cell Phone Disco Art and Science Project, Pgh Cultural District PA

The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust unveils city’s first art+science interactive installation in the Cultural District
CELL PHONE DISCO
Tito and Exchange Ways
Cell Phone Disco by Informationlab (Auke Touwslager, Ursula Lavrenčič)
Engineering: Aleš Vrhovec, Janez Jazbar and Robert Unetich
PITTSBURGH, PA: This Tuesday, the Trust will unveil a large-scale light project that artfully visualizes the electromagnetic field of an active mobile phone. With funding from The Fine Foundation, The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust commissioned the Netherlands-based artist collective, Informationlab, to create Cell Phone Disco, the city’s first art+science interactive installation.

“The notion of ‘Lighting’ the Cultural District is in our current five-year strategic plan and also our upcoming three-year plan," says Murray Horne, curator of the Trust’s Wood Street Galleries. “Cell Phone Disco will serve as an anchor for other potential installations that will illuminate the pedestrian pathways throughout the District.”

Cell Phone Disco joins a list of other notable lighting installations curated by The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust: Sign of Light (1999) designed by Robert Wilson and Richard Gluckman, Wall of Light (1999) by Robert Wilson and Flow (2004) by Erwin Redl.
In 2006, architect Ursula Lavrenčič and information designer Auke Touwslager created the first version of Cell Phone Disco, an installation which transforms a part of the electromagnetic spectrum into another frequency range - the range of visible light. Their fascination lies with the transmission quality of the mobile phone; its presence beyond the shell of the device.

Every single mobile phone transmits radio waves in order to connect to a network and everyday millions of people around the world are broadcasting their private conversations. Here we are witnessing a unique moment in history, when transmission is no longer exclusive domain of broadcasting companies. Mobile phone connectivity became just another layer of urban landscape and substantially changed the electromagnetic topography of the environment. Cell Phone Disco has been embraced by many art galleries and museums, but with the installation in Pittsburgh, it is finally positioned in the public space where it generates a glimpse at the dynamics of the omnipresent mobile phone traffic.
For this first outdoor, site-specific art installation of Cell Phone Disco, the intersection of Tito and Exchange ways was selected for its high-volume of pedestrian traffic and the very long sight line down Exchange Way. The artists note in a statement, “We find it very interesting that in this way you can observe from a great distance electromagnetic clouds that people passing by are (unintentionally) producing.”
In order to reach the sensitivity that corresponds the urban scale and situation, the artists and a team of engineers developed a concept where an advanced receiver continuously scans input from 16 antennas along the 16 by 16’ grid. The data of the electromagnetic radiation is fed to eight processors that are embedded in the digital display. The computed values at any given point are represented through 2,304 individually controlled LED lights. What was once invisible is now detectable through the visual senses:
“We wanted to present a visualization of the electromagnetic space and blend it with the physical environment. We have enveloped the display in a two-way mirror, so when there is cell phone activity in the vicinity the light cloud appears on the top of the reflected image of the alley. In this sense the installation is a fusion of the invisible digital reality represented by LEDs and the analog world as it appears in the mirror,” the artists note in an emailed statement.
“When people see the installation and make a phone call, after they are finished, they may see the phone no longer as an object in their hands but something that is larger, something part of a much bigger invisible architecture,” says Mr. Touwslager.

Ms.
Lavrencic adds, “I hope people will enjoy walking through the alley and that Cell Phone Disco will become a natural part of the alley. From an architectural perspective, it is very interesting to see how an intervention like Cell Phone Disco can change how people move through the city.”
Informationlab is a tag that identifies the collaborative efforts of an international group operating at the shifting intersection of art, science, technology & design. Since 2004 Informationlab founders Auke Touwslager (NL) and Ursula Lavrencic (SLO) seen their efforts being adopted by different fields and audiences. As a result their Cell Phone Disco (2006) concept found its way to an international art community and to museums and galleries around the world. Most of the group collaboration is based on curiosity driven research which subsequently lead to a variety of projects, exhibitions, workshops and lectures.
In addition to being members of Informationlab both Lavrencic, an architect, and Touwslager, an information architect, run their own design studios in Amsterdam. Visit http://www.cellphonedisco.org for more information.

Pgh Society of Illustrators Newsletter, Pittsburgh PA Art

Check out the Pgh Society of Illustrator's Nov 2010 newsletter. It's well put together, minus some photo resolution issues (I'm a harsh critic when it comes to that).

Pittsburgh Society of Illustrators (PSI) was founded in 1997. We are a future-oriented professional group that sees no limits to the possibilities of the narrative art form of illustration, serving not only all print markets, but the web/interactive, animation, interior design, outdoor exhibit, and collectors' markets as well. We are the fourth largest Society of Illustrators in the United States, with every technique and process eclectically represented. PSI exists to fill the specific needs for an organization with which all Pittsburgh area illustrators and other persons interested in the aims of the society (buyers, gallery directors, educators, etc.) can affiliate. In order to achieve our general aims, PSI undertakes activities such as social gatherings, reception and entertainment of visitors, lectures and discussions, fund-raisers, exhibitions, meetings of professional and related groups, and similar activities. We organize workshops, field trips, and instructional materials to raise professional, student, and patron awareness of the illustration art form.

Lonely underpass becomes public art gallery, Pgh Pa

Pop City article

Wednesday, November 17, 2010

The Underpass Improvement Program was formulated in 2007 as part of The Children's Museum Charm Bracelet Program, a multi-organizational initiative designed to foster creative community improvements. After The Northside Leadership Conference decided to make improvements to the underpasses at Anderson and Sandusky Streets, The Children's Museum concluded they would do the same for Federal Street with the addition of large public art installations that would rotate every 8 to 12 months.

Pittsburgh's Future: Visionary David Bear

Liking what the future of Pittsburgh might entail, reading this PG article:

Glass-walled skyscrapers that hold vertical hydroponic farms built to feed urban populations may sound futuristic, but Dickson Despommier thinks we may be seeing real ones within a year.

...

Pittsburgh has its own visionary in David Bear, a fellow at the Studio for Creative Inquiry at Carnegie Mellon University. The studio is an idea incubator, where artists, philosophers, scientists, computer engineers and others mingle as comfortably as poker players at a hunting cabin.

...

(In regards to the top of the U.S. Steel Tower):

He proposes an environmentally innovative, publicly accessible urban park with unequalled views that could become a tourism destination and a symbol of Pittsburgh much as St. Louis' Gateway Arch is. Its features could contribute to the international dialogue over issues as varied as expanding populations, environmental stewardship and livable cities.

Cork Factory Drawings by Zarah Blair, Shaw Galleries

PITTSBURGH, PA, 10/14/10 – Shaw Galleries is pleased to announce the opening on Tuesday, November 2, 2010 of "Cork Factory Drawings by Zarah Blair," an exhibit featuring nine documentary drawings that capture the 2005-06 renovation of Pittsburgh's historic Armstrong Cork Factory building in the Strip District, and six drawings of homeless children Blair envisioned as living there when the building was a cold, graffiti covered shell.

Zarah Blair of Sarver, PA, is an artist who became a nursing home administrator along the way. She has been drawing since childhood and has been in nursing/administration for over 30 years. Blair attended classes in drawing, design, and printmaking at Chatham College in Pittsburgh and was invited to teach an Art Endeavor Program through a grant from the Society for Contemporary Craft on Pittsburgh’s North Shore. There, she created, developed, and led the unique program in eldercare environments. To date, she has taught singular printmaking (monotype) combined with collage to seventh graders, college students, and senior adults of all levels and abilities. She is a member of the National Collage Society and the Pittsburgh Watercolor Society and is a board member of the Mental Health Association of Butler County. Also an author, Blair wrote and illustrated "FINE LINES – A Story of Art and Aging," published by Word Association Publishers, Tarentum. Dr. Bernie Segal, author of "Peace, Love and Healing" said, “Reading FINE LINES is like reading a poem about life written by a courageous poet.”

Blair says this series celebrates new life in old buildings whilst hearkening to the past. "Is there a building in your hometown that you and your children see as a keeper?," she asks. "It doesn't have to be big. It could be the small frame house of an amazing playwright, or a meeting place that stands for hope in your neighborhood; a place ripe for reinvention with a strong foothold in all that came before."

The exhibition runs through Saturday, November 27. Regular gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays.

BARCLAY GALLERY
Born of Fire: The Valley Work is the story of a shared past and future forged from steel, as seen through the eyes of both national and regional artists. These images express the immense energy, power, wonder and force of the vast industrial complex that took shape in the mid-nineteenth through the early twentieth-century, a time when Pittsburgh became the nation's foremost center of iron making and mass-produced steel. The collection also includes works by contemporary artists that represent remnants of the steel city. Together, they form a lasting record of the artistic and historic legacy of the southwestern Pennsylvania region.

American Landscapes: Treasures from the Parrish Art Museum

American art abounds in landscape images that frame the way we look at nature and serve as visual points of reference for our memory. We may be drawn to these works for their descriptive evocations of the natural world or for their power to remind us of places we have known, but seldom do we reflect on the force of this attraction. Perhaps it is a longing for ‘putting down roots’ in a society where ‘transplanting’ has become the norm. These terms, borrowed from the lexicon of gardening, may serve to remind us that we are creatures of nature, too, and that our human condition is inextricably bound up with that of the natural world around us. This exhibition, a selection of thirty-nine nineteenth and twentieth-century American landscape paintings drawn from the permanent collection of The Parrish Art Museum in Southampton, New York, invites viewers to consider how these images of place can trigger our memory, stir our feelings and kindle a yearning for the reassuring familiarity of the past.

Funding for the American Landscapes: Treasures from the Parrish Art Museum exhibition is provided by: The Heinz Endowments, Henry L. Hillman Foundation, Highmark Blue Cross Blue Shield, and Millstein Charitable Foundation

At the River’s Edge: Paintings by Patrick Ruane

Patrick Ruane grew up in the suburbs among woods and polluted creeks, but to him running wild through the woods was magical. The Allegheny River was only three miles away, and from an early age it made a visual impression on him. He finds the river views hypnotic. As a teenager, he canoed and camped on the Allegheny, and from that point, Ruane knew the river was a symbol of possibilities; a vein of water connected to all the other great rivers, forests, natural wonders and places he longed to visit and perhaps, escape. Bands of sky, land, water, muted colors and fog that comprise his paintings convey a calm, unhurried, perhaps meditative nature. Ruane lives in Glenshaw, PA and holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

Jimmy Cvetic, Secret Society of Dog poetry reading, Pittsburgh, Pa

Awesome Books/Lascaux Editions is happy to announce the publication of Jimmy Cvetic's Secret Society of Dog, his debut book of poetry with Awesome Books.

Jimmy Cvetic, aka Dog, is a retired Allegheny County cop who writes like Bukowski with a badge. Having worked for over 30 years in Pittsburgh as a uniformed officer, an undercover narcotics agent, and a homicide detective, Cvetic offers a unique glimpse into the real life trials, tribulations, and black humor of police work. Having amassed over three thousand poems over the past fourdecades, he bears witness to the full range of the human drama - from horrific tragedies to dark comedies of folly.

Jimmy Cvetic will read from Secret Society of Dog at Hemingway's, 3911 Forbes Avenue in Oakland.

The reading starts at 8 pm on Tues, Nov. 16,and admission is FREE.

"These are the best poems I've ever read about cops. Not only are the voices totally convincing, but the poems are various in terms of tone and content. And the comic poems bristle with a black humor appropriate to their subject. Secret Society of Dog is a terrific read."
Ed Ochester
, poet and Editor of the Pitt Poetry Series

"This is a poet that moves me and scares the hell outta me but he's too much of a human being to veer from the truth. He's a retired narcotics officer that lived the streets, who writes from depths of soul. His poetry speaks to the heart of the human condition."
Nick Nolte, actor The Prince of Tides, Affliction, 48 Hours, Lorenzo's Oil, The Thin Red Line

Building a Transatlantic Bridge Project, Westmoreland Museum of American Art

Building a Transatlantic Bridge
Thursday October 01, 2009 - Friday December 31, 2010International Collaboration
Cost : free with admission donation

Building a Transatlantic Bridge

The Westmoreland Museum of American Art, along with the LVR-Industriemuseum in Oberhausen, Germany, has created the Building a Transatlantic Bridge project, a dynamic partnership that is connecting students from these two regions by using technology with a focus on the art and industrial heritage of the regions of Pittsburgh and the Ruhr Valley. The project is funded by the American Association of Museums and the U.S. Department of State.

Teachers and students from Greensburg Salem High School, and teachers and students in Heinrich-Bll-Gesamtschule, Gymnasium Gustav-Heinemann-Schulzentrum, and Freiherr-vom Stein-Gymnasium in Germany are participating in the project. Students identify steelmaking as the major 20th century industry of southwestern Pennsylvania and the Ruhr Valley, and reasons for the decline of steelmaking in each region, and are able to see how each region has adapted to these changes. Central to the exchange for participants is the creation of a central blog using free, open-source publishing tools. The blog serves as the primary platform for highlighting new achievements and illustrating project activities. Postings come from museum staff, students and teachers, and/or community participants.

Click here to go to our blog.

Visit The Westmoreland to experience our recently transformed KidSpace, which includes an interactive kiosk for visitors to record stories and reactions or to view other visitors' videos about the project or what they have experienced in the Museum. Another kiosk features Building a Transatlantic Bridge web sites, including links to social media sites established for the project, and to Feuerlnder: Regions of Vulcan, an exhibition that features The Westmoreland's Born of Fire: The Valley of Work. The exhibition is on view in Oberhausen through November 28, 2010, as part of Germany's Ruhr Region's designation as the 2010 European Capital of Culture.

Steel Valley Arts Council Presents First Silent Art Auction with

Artwork by Robert Qualters, George Nama, Paula Bland and others in Art Auction

Dec. 4, 8 and 11 (2010) at Artspace 105, Homestead, PA

Acrylic and oil paintings, sculptures, prints on auction by some of the world’s renowned artists

Homestead, PA - The Steel Valley Arts Council (SVAC), a not for profit arts organization serving the areas of Homestead, West Homestead, and Munhall has been programming artistic activity for close to two decades and in that time the group has accumulated, by donations, a large quantity of art by some of the best local artists recognized worldwide. This collection of art will be on silent auction, to support SVAC’s operating budget, December 4, from noon - 2 p.m., Wed. 8, from 6:30 – 8 p.m., Sat.11, from 7 – 9 p.m.

Paintings by Robert Qualters, “Dome Church” 14” x 17” acrylic on canvas, George Nama sketchbook pages signed and unsigned prints, wood cut prints by Walter Gasowski, artworks by Paul Kolesar, Paula Bland, Anna Marie Sninsky, Roslyn Stulga, the artist collective Society for Pennsylvania and Surrounding Area History and others, to name only a few of the many recognized artists that will have works for auction. Visitors can make bids on over 45 pieces of artworks ranging in price from $50 - $1000, different sizes and mediums (acrylic and oil paintings, woodcut prints, sculptures, and photographs).

“This collection of art on auction is one of the most impressive groups of work that reflect the region’s architecture, its ethos and characteristics,” said Eric Sloss, Vice President of the Steel Valley Arts Council. “This will be a wonderful time to buy a great piece or art at an economical price.”

All the artworks reflect the region, in some way. Nama’s sketchbook prints show row-houses snuggled against the rolling hills of the Western Pennsylvania, Qualters street light banners are of women making perogies or of the onion domes on top of local churches and Paula Bland’s cubist-like paintings reflect the effort and labor of the area’s steel mills.

People will be able to bid on Dec. 4, 8, and 11. December 4 is the Steel Valley’s Holiday parade. Visitors will be able to bid in various increments by writing their name and phone number next to the painting. The bidding will last three days and on Dec. 11 final auction winners will be announced. Final winners will be able to pick up their artwork on Dec. 11 at 8 p.m. Visa, Mastercard, checks and cash will be accepted. To view samples of the artwork on auction visit

www.steelvalleyarts.org/auction.htm.

Artspace105, is the Steel Valley Arts Council’s art gallery. The gallery was selected as the “Best Underground Art Gallery” by Pittsburgh Magazine in September in their “Best of Pittsburgh” edition.

Power Flower information.

Curious Creature Photos.

The Power Flower is a 12' wind driven kinetic sculpture and is the first in an evolving series of energy producing public art designs.

The Power Flower collects sun and wind energy with a wind turbine, driven by spinning flower petals, and photo voltaic solar film leaf surfaces.

A rainwater collector serves as base and ballast. The sculpture can provide DC power for laptops, phones or even water pump features for garden applications.

The sculpture also powers LED lighting for night time illumination. A weather-proof controller maintains safe power levels and timed programmable lighting.

The sculpture is transportable and sets up easily for events and exhibitions.

Our sculptures are created for use by city art festivals, botanical associations, schools and museums for either temporary or permanent site specific installations.

In addition Art Energy Design offers various educational workshops specifically designed for elementary, middle and high school students.

The Power Flower is the first of it's kind and was born on March 15, 2008.
