Press Release:
Filmmakers Announces Senior Photography Show
(Pittsburgh, PA) – Pittsburgh Filmmakers announces a group photography show featuring thesis work by eight seniors of the BFA Photography program. The show is on view from March 28 through April 20, 2008. An Opening Reception will be held on Friday, March 28 from 5:30 to 8:00pm. It is free and open to the public.
“These promising students seem to be reconciling their past, present and unknown future,” explains Associate Professor Sue Abramson, head of the Photography program at Filmmakers. “Also, in this year’s show, a recurring theme of obsession emerged.”
The BFA in Photography is offered through a cooperative arrangement with Pittsburgh Filmmakers and Point Park University. It is the only undergraduate Fine Arts degree in Photography in the Pittsburgh area.
The thesis show features an eclectic mix of styles from the following artists:
Jordan Beckham - Color portraits of friends and family; environmental stop action photos. The subject throws objects (that represent their obsessions) towards the camera. The result is both fun and cathartic.
Matt Carrico – Large scale (color) composite/collage portraits represent memories, feelings and fears from the artist's childhood.
Bryan Conley - Seductive and abstract black and white landscapes of the mind that deal with the artist's transitory state of mind.
Julia Bodura - Modern (color) reproductions and interpretations of well-known works of art. The artist and sometimes her mother are the models in these new versions.
Tricia Harvey - Long exposures documenting the lights and movement of roller coasters from the ride at night. These also portray a coming-of-age theme.
Kelsey Kradel - These are color photographic journal entries from daily life. They document personal interiors to public spaces.
Danielle Thirkell - Humorous domestic interiors with the female nude as object, in fact literally becoming one with the home.
Vanna Weaver - A document of antiques -- the people who collect them, the places to buy or sell them, the shops and flea markets.
Filmmakers Galleries are located at 477 Melwood Avenue, North Oakland. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, noon to 5:00, and evenings when films are screened. Free and open to the public. More information: 412-681-5449, or www.pghfilmmakers.org .
