I spent most of my time at Imagebox Gallery, 4933 Penn Ave, which is next door to Garfield Artworks, which is a place I always enjoy hanging out at during Unblurred. Imagebox is unique in many ways as far as Pittsburgh art galleries. People are always commenting on the design of the space, events are well attended, and the owner, John Mahood, does not charge artists a commission when work is sold which is unheard of in the gallery scene. John runs Imagebox Productions, website www.imagebox.com , which handles marketing, graphic design, and web design needs.
Shari Lynn Bennett has a solo show at Imagebox which consists of old family photos transferred onto canvas and then the scenes are painted in oils and pigment paints. The use of paints and transfers of photo onto canvas is a creative approach not to mention the stories of her family members in the photos. One of the images is of a boy who later on would find himself leaving Pearl Harbor the day before the bombing.
I ran into Artist Charles A. Smith, II and checked out a pamphlet of his which features limited custom prints of original paintings he's done. "Dancer at Rest #1" immediately caught my eye. His website is http://artistcharlessmith.com/ . He is an award winning artist who is a painter, designer, sculptor and muralist.
I also talked with fine art and documentary photographer Bill Wade who has an upcoming show at the Westmoreland Museum of American Art titled "Waterfall Spirits" which runs from Sunday June 29, 2008 to Sunday August 24, 2008. The Phone number for the museum is (724) 837-1500 . link here This exhibition features the work of the 2006 recipient of The Westmoreland Exhibition Award selected from the Associated Artists of Pittsburgh annual exhibition. This waterfall series offers the artist's view of the abstract qualities of water as it flows over rocks and precipices. According to the artist: "I hope to convey the inner experience of waterfalls," and in his dynamic black and white photographs, Wade does just that and more, capturing the drama and sound of the water as it moves through the natural world.
