Artist Fumino Hora at PGC, Nov 5 to Jan 17, 2010/2011

Don't Miss This!

Hodge Gallery: Upcoming Exhibition

The Way of Saṃsāra

Fumino Hora's website.

November 5, 2010 - January 17, 2011

Opening Reception: Nov 5 Friday 6-9 pm

From the PGC Website:

Have you ever felt that you have lived another life before this one?

Saṃsāra is the Sanskrit word for the perpetual cycle of birth, death and rebirth in which human souls are inescapably caught. The ultimate Buddhist goal is to achieve Nirvana: the final release from this endless earthly cycle. Traditional Buddhism teaches that Nirvana can only be attained through the practice of strict bodily discipline. Japanese Zen, however, does not urge the complete abandonment of all sensory pleasures in one’s quest for awakening. Artist Fumino Hora’s The Way of Saṃsāra explores and advocates the Zen art of striking a delicate balance between appreciating the transient beauties of the physical world, and turning away from those same beauties in pursuit of the elusive state of Nirvana. Human beings are inherently both physically and spiritually imperfect. However, despite these flaws and errors, Zen Buddhism upholds human beings and life itself as being transiently beautiful, and worthy of being cherished and celebrated.

This semi-site-specific installation will envelop the viewer into a sense of greater serenity and state of self-reflection. The human body is used as a metaphor to invoke an appreciation of the beauty in all things imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete. Glass, paper, photography and video work together to create a meditative space. All of the materials used are symbolic in that they, by their nature, are also transient and ephemeral.

Fumino Hora is a native of Tokyo, Japan. She gained a BFA and MFA from RMIT University, Melbourne, Australia. Currently she is a candidate for the DFA with RMIT University. She came to Pittsburgh in 2006 after living in Hong Kong for 14 years. She has studied photography at Pittsburgh Filmmakers, and has been a resident artist at Pittsburgh Glass Center this year.

This installation is in collaboration with Pittsburgh Filmmakers.

Working in the studio allows an artist to create his/her own schedule, budget, and system for creation. Once an artist moves into the highly collaborative field of public art, huge changes are introduced. In this workshop we will cover how to work with other professionals, where to find help when needed, and the roles of each professional/ stakeholder as a project moves forward.

1. Slide show highlighting 10-15 different types of public art projects including full descriptions.

2. Getting started -learning from stakeholders including community members, architects/designers, and reviewing bodies; the roles of team members and lines of communication (project manager, contracting officer, architects, engineers and other consultants).

3. How to present your ideas—what is expected during concept development stage.

4. Leveraging opportunities and resources (e.g. architecture/building elements and/or community involvement)

5. Artist experiences - how and what we learned from community members and stakeholders, and content/resources; how we leveraged architecture -the development steps of a project.

6. Collateral benefits - how the artwork can live on in the community in other forms (books, events, webpages, etc.)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

“C” STANDS FOR…

CLAIRE HARDY’S PAINTING STUDIO AND NEW WORKS GALLERY

OPENING RECEPTION: FRIDAY, OCTOBER 8, 2010

Coraopolis, Pennsylvania, September 28, 2010… Claire Hardy, Sewickley resident and acclaimed fine art painter, announces the opening of Studio C, her new painting studio located at 845 Fourth Avenue, Coraopolis in the Crivelli Professional Building.

Claire joins a list of local artists who have chosen to own their own creative spaces. Studio C will serve as a painting studio, classroom for private students and gallery space highlighting new works on canvas. The name, Studio C, was selected because it offers easy name retention due to her first name as well as its location. Claire selected the large studio space to make room for newer larger works as well as to continue practicing more of the still life and floral paintings for which she has become known."

“Try to put in practice what you already know, and in so doing, you will in good time
discover the hidden things which you now inquire about. Practice what you know,
and it will help make clear what now you do not know.” -- Rembrandt van Rijn

Claire Hardy takes this scholarly approach to her own picture-making. For example, in interpreting a landscape by Rembrandt, she researched the pigments he used and sought to capture his earthly colors and glazes (refer to image A). In a larger painting, she incorporates similar pigments and brushwork to create a warmer landscape of her own (refer to image B).

Studio C will open Friday, October 8, 2010 from 6-8 p.m. Meet the artist, Claire Hardy, view her newest paintings in the Studio C Gallery and learn more about commissioning an original painting or private lessons. Claire is still taking reservations for the holidays.

To R.S.V.P. to the Studio C Opening call 412-567-2704. To learn more about Claire Hardy or to view an online gallery of her paintings, visit www.clairehardy.com.

Artist Statement: Claire Hardy

The word clair is French for clear, light, luminous, vivid. These words describe my paintings. They also describe how I perceive the oil colors themselves. I am drawn to bright colors and often use them right out of the tube, mixing them on the canvas as I shape the forms. Oil color seems to me to be a living thing. If it is brushed or mixed too much, it loses its sheen.

I keep the paint fresh by painting wet-into-wet, sculpting my way from transparent dark colors to opaque lights. After laying in shapes of color, I use softer brushes to smooth edges or refine them. I use brushstrokes to describe shape, texture, and effects of light. Sometimes, I scrape color away to reveal the weave of the linen or canvas and then paint back into the area. Each painting is an experimental process.

I paint still lifes, landscapes, and portraits, but flowers are my favorite subject. They offer a wide range for interpretation, bold colors, graceful and interesting compositions. And there are always readily available models waiting in my garden.
