Pittsburgh Artist Bob Ziller Projects: Jean-Joseph Rabearivelo's Translated From the Night

Came across some info on some of artist Bob Ziller's recent projects at his myspace page

My translation of Jean-Joseph Rabearivelo's Translated from the Night is now available at: www.lascauxeditions.com Rabearivelo (1901-1937), of Madagascar, is considered Africa's first modern poet. If you enjoy poetry, you'll love this book. He's been called a pure African surrealist. This is the first complete English translation of Rabearivelo's swansong masterpiece.

There are some of other projects and items of note at the website http://www.lascauxeditions.com/ .

Pittsburgh Artist John Lienert

On May 24, 2008, the art of Pittsburgh artist John Lienert was on display at the Bellevue Art Crawl. If you were lucky enough to see his work I would appreciate any posts here about what you were able to see and if you have photographs. I was hiking through Yellowstone's backcountry at the time and wish I had at least been able to blog the event. These are the types of rare exhibits which reward those who keep an eye out for what's going on in Pittsburgh. There was a May 22 Tribune article and I came across a flickr page with some images and a write up... Also you can see his work again Saturday July 12, 2008, more info here.

Excerpts:

John Lienert: 1924 - 1974

John Lienert was a fireman, ironworker, husband, father and artist. Lienert’s work has been viewed by very few people outside of his immediate family since his death in 1974. Lienert began sketching in pencil and charcoal in the 1950s, progressing to water colors and oils. In the 1960s he began sculpting. He started with plaster, then wood, stone and finally metal.
...
In 1966, John Lienert was a Pittsburgh firefighter, stationed on the fireboat, the “Scully.” The “Scully was docked at the bottom of Fourth Street on Pittsburgh’s Southside. To pass the time between fire calls and maintenance duties, he set up a workbench on the dock to do his sculpting. A June 2, 1966 Pittsburgh Post-Gazette article and photo shows him sculpting plaster busts on the shore of the Monongahela River.
...
Unfortunately John Lienert passed away at the young age of forty-nine in April of 1974. Since that time no one outside of his immediate family and friends has viewed any of his work. For the first time in thirty-four years Lienert’s paintings and sculptures will be displayed at the Bellevue Art Crawl on May 24. The third floor of the old G C Murphy building will be transformed into an art gallery.

Handmade Arcade Pittsburgh Art Festival November 8 and 9, 2008

After four amazing years at Construction Junction, Handmade Arcade is moving! Handmade Arcade 2008 will be held at the Hunt Armory in Shadyside (http://www.rahuntfdn.org/armory.shtml), just a short hop away from East Liberty and close to major bus lines. The Hunt Armory was built in 1916 and has had a long and varied history in Pittsburgh, having hosted everyone from Billy Graham to Led Zeppelin. We hope that this move will allow HA to really grow and continue to bring you all the best indie and DIY crafts Pittsburgh and beyond have to offer. And a huge thank you to Construction Junction (http://www.constructionjunction.org/) for being our home for four years. HA would not be what it is today without the support of the fine folks at Construction Junction.

Hunt Armory is located at 324 Emerson St, Pittsburgh, PA 15206.

Handmade Arcade is Pittsburgh’s largest indie craft fair, now in its fifth year. Last year, over 8,000 attended Handmade Arcade.
The annual Handmade Arcade was created to give grassroots, independent crafters an opportunity to show and sell their wares, and to provide an alternative to traditional craft and art fairs.

You’ll find innovative visual art, jewelry, scary and sweet stuffed creatures, knitted accessories, silk screened prints and tees, felted fashions, hand bound books, spun yarns, stationery, ‘zines, housewares and lots more.

Daydreaming about Pittsburgh Art, Part Two by Rick Byerly

What's this? Daydreaming about Pittsburgh Art? If you missed my first one check it out. This next one has occupied a lot of time, except for maybe when I was trekking Yellowstone in May. It sprang from one of those things where you're daydreaming what you would do if you won or somehow came into a lot of money. Not a completely ridiculous scenario save I don't play the lottery. It's not like daydreaming about what I would do if I possessed superpowers. Anyways with all this imaginary money I daydream about starting food co-ops and funding Pittsburgh based retraining groups like Bidwell Training Center and other projects to address the bloated college level educational experience which now is worth virtually nothing.

Beyond those important issues I think of how I would help out Pittsburgh artists and how to keep them here (like me). An almost constant daydream is the Pittsburgh Artist Museum. A museum featuring the talent of all types of visual art on the North Shore near the Warhol and Mattress Factory to further attract visitors and residents alike to see and buy the artwork which arises out of this New Pittsburgh. The art would be purchased on the gallery level thereby continuing to support galleries and artists alike and then the art would placed in the Pittsburgh Artist Museum, or Pittsburgh Art Museum if you like, on display and for sale at a higher price. When artwork is sold the artist would then get another percentage from the museum (if living) in the field of say 70% and the museum getting 30% for operating expenses.

Wherever this large amount of money would come from to fund this project it would be fully invested and only the % made over the principal would be used to buy art and keep the building running, thereby ensuring the continuing existence of the museum. In addition to buying artwork it would also fund public art, both with local and overall artistic angles, eg from sculptures of Pittsburgh Jazz legends to abstract art murals.

I'm amazed at how much money many non-profits and foundations have in the Pittsburgh region and how little they directly benefit actual Pittsburgh artists. So maybe someone has a lot of money out there they want to see go toward supporting Pittsburgh artists. Send me an email! Or maybe the Pittsburgh Foundation and the like is looking to include people on their committees who have a lot of ideas on how to keep Pittsburgh artists in Pittsburgh. Give me a call! Until then I may still be daydreaming and working on my fine art photography either in Pittsburgh or somewhere I can survive on my passions.

Seeing Pittsburgh Bost Building Exhibits July 9 2008 -Jan 31 2009

Bost Building Exhibits
Seeing Pittsburgh July 9, 2008 - January 31, 2009

In celebration of Pittsburgh's 250th anniversary, Rivers of Steel worked with 44 Pittsburghers from eleven neighborhoods to produce the Seeing Pittsburgh project. Armed with cameras and the instructions to show us what defines their community, these residents photographed the good, the bad, the new, the old, the physical, the emotional...everyting that defines their neighborhood.

This exhibit was made possible by a generous grant from the Allegheny Regional Asset District's Renaissance grant program.

The Restored Rooms
The Bost Building was built in 1892 as a hotel and served as the temporary headquarters for the Amalgamated Association of Iron and Steel Workers during the Homestead Lockout and Strike. Two rooms in the building have been restored to the way they looked in 1892, with original floorboards and period reproduction wallpaper. One room tells the story of the Homestead Strike; the other contains photographs that chronicle the restoration of the building from dilapidation through its opening as the Rivers of Steel Visitors Center.Recently added to the restored rooms is a computer kiosk displaying an exciting documentary on the Battle of Homestead. Using archival footage, photographs and documents, this film allows you to learn about history on the site where it occurred.

The Homestead Room The Homestead Room is a permanent exhibit displaying artifacts and art work specifically related to the Homestead Works. The centerpiece of the exhibit is a 23.5' long model of the Homestead Works that originally stood in the General Office Building of the mill.

Admission to the Bost Building is free.

Exhibit hours:Monday through Friday, 10 am to 4 pmSaturday, 11 am to 3 pm. The Bost Building will be CLOSED on July 4 and 5, 2008.

Your Town, Inc by Julia Christensen @ Miller Gallery CMU Agust 29 2008

The Miller Gallery at Carnegie Mellon University presents "Your Town, Inc." by Julia Christensen August 29 through November 22.

The exhibition coincides with the release of Christensen's book Big Box Reuse on November 14. The exhibition will feature 80 photographs from the forthcoming book, which examines how communities are changing in the shadow of corporate real estate. Christensen, an author, artist, and researcher, has spent the past six years studying the "big box" mega-stores constructed by large multinational corporations such as Wal-Mart and K-Mart. Her exhibition explores how communities make use of the "big box" structures after they are abandoned by the corporations that built them.

As part of "Your Town, Inc.," Christensen will collaborate with students at Oberlin College and Carnegie Mellon to fabricate an architectural construction in response to the "big box" concept. The building will be made completely out of recycled materials and will be surrounded by a parking lot. Transportable, modular, and easily reusable, the "UnBox" will be used for creative and social uses, challenging the values and conventions of corporate retail.

The Miller Gallery is located in the Purnell Center for the Arts on Carnegie Mellon's Pittsburgh campus. The gallery, free and open to the public, is open from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday-Sunday. Visit www.cmu.edu/millergallery for more information.

Artist Residencies in Action During the months of April and May, 3rd grade students from the Martin Luther King Accelerated Learning Academy designed and constructed a mosaic mural with instruction by local ceramic artist Laura Jean McLaughlin. Collaborating with art teacher Christina Muzzie, and with matching funding from The Mattress Factory, the mosaic was designed and built by the students out of tile and glass to celebrate the North Side Community and the life of Martin Luther King Jr. The creative process began with discussion of the architecture of the North Side and the symbolism of various buildings in the neighborhood, included sketches for the final piece, and culminated in its prominent installation in the school. The Mattress Factory (www.mattress.org) brought the school and the Resident Artist together through an application process designed to place practicing artists in schools to better educate the community about contemporary installation art.Pittsburgh Center for the Arts' Artist Residency Projects, in partnership with the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, place practicing professional artists in schools, nonprofit service agencies, and community organizations throughout southwestern Pennsylvania. They are designed to have lasting benefits for all participants: students are fully immersed in an art form and see how it connects to life and learning, teachers are exposed to alternative ways of experiencing and sharing the creative process and what it brings to their classrooms, and administrators recognize the ways in which the arts fully engage students and impact their learning across the curriculum. Check out our website for more information on this wonderful program!

Society for Contemporary Craft Friday June 27, 2008 Pittsburgh Art

Society for Contemporary Craft Main Gallery

5 Contemporary Masters (June 27 - September 13, 2008)

5 Contemporary Masters opening reception Friday, June 27, 2008 5:30 - 8 pm. Free public reception.

In recognition of the strong vision of the Society for Contemporary Craft's founder, Pittsburgh arts patron Elizabeth Rockwell Raphael, SCC is featuring 5 Contemporary Masters. In the early 1970s Raphael recognized that artists working in craft - clay, glass, wood, metal, fiber and found objects - were exploring new directions in contemporary art, and she opened The Store for Arts and Crafts and People-Made Things in Verona, Pennsylvania, which was known locally as The Store. 5 Contemporary Masters highlights the recent work of five artists Lenore Tawney, Marek Cecula, Jonathan bonner, John Cederquist and Steven Maslach who were represented by Raphael in The Store in Verona in the early years. Each of the artists selected has work from this time period in SCC's permanent collection, which today includes more than 300 objects. A companion brochure accompanies the exhibition.
