moxie DaDA gallery will celebrate its 4th ANNIVERSARY this month. As always, we have a special exhibit to mark the occasion. Guest curator and Chatham University senior Kari Garber has been handed the reigns this month as part of her tutorial project examining the exhibition of non-Western imagery in Western society. Kari has selected Prajna Paramita Parasher and her works of 2D digital multimedia.

The opening reception will be held this Saturday, October 4, 2008 from 6-9:00pm and is free and open to the public. The exhibit runs through Saturday October 25, 2008.

"...beyond stimulating aesthetics, Parasher’s work in 2-D digital multimedia reveals intriguing complexities. Acting as curator on this project presents a unique learning opportunity to explore exhibition theory and practice on a more intimate level, while also serving as a foundation for deeper research into issues facing an ever-expanding global art community. From historical appropriation to the modern day Diaspora, this project seeks to examine the challenges of exhibiting cultural content outside the realms of familiar understanding. A Beholding will serve as the embodiment of research dealing with the exhibition of Non-Western themes and motifs in American society." -guest curator Kari Garber

Creation by Accident: Works by Aimee Manion & Sebastian van Gorder

Opening Reception:

October 3, 2008
7:00 pm
to
10:00 pm

Aimee Manion and Sebastian van Gorder have been Creating together for over half of a decade. Their work is both playful and searingly resolute. A melding of the abstract and the tangible, their imagery explores the wonders and mysteries of Creation.

By constructing captivating vistas of movement and provocative color overlaid with suggestive forms and figures, they aim to incite viewers to inquire within themselves about their own existence, about the unknown and the ineffable.

Drawing inspiration from science texts, headline news and everything in between, Aimee and Sebastian commit layer after layer to the canvas (or, rather, wood, paper, glass and drafting film). Each additional layer obscures the previous layers, much the way that our origins and the origins of the universe are cloaked in unending potential for discovery and question. Nothing is obvious. Nothing is intended to be interpreted in a particular way. No object or artwork is assigned a meaning.
As each piece develops, its meaning undergoes a constant metamorphosis, absorbing energy and ideas from two Beings and combining them into a single artifact that can be can be pondered endlessly.

Sebastian holds a degree in Biochemistry; Aimee in Fine Art with a minor in Anthropology. As the universe draws on all available resources to create, so does this Pair. Creation has filled a void in space. Aimee and Sebastian aim to fill a void as well. The viewer needs to bring their own void.

Exhibit runs through the 24th.

Buy a Bottle, Support PGC & Block HousePittsburgh Glass Center has partnered with the Fort Pitt Block House, located at Point State Park, to produce and sell a commemorative bottle that celebrates the historical connection between the Fort Pitt Block House and Pittsburgh-s early glass industry. For over a century, the Pittsburgh region was the center of production and marketing for America-s glass industry. The O'Hara Glass Works which opened in 1797 by General James O'Hara and Major Isaac Craig was the first of the pioneer glass-houses in the Allegheny region. Situated just opposite the Point in Pittsburgh at the current location of the Carson Street Station of the Duquesne Incline, the glass works produced dark green and black porter bottles which supplied one of O-Hara-s other investments, the Point Brewery. The blown glass replica bottle bears the concave punty mark and the asymmetrical wrap around the lip of a classic O-Hara & Craig porter bottle but with a modern flair of black and gold - the official colors of the City of Pittsburgh. Together, Pittsburgh Glass Center and Fort Pitt Block House are bridging the gap between Pittsburgh-s history as a major producer in glass to its creative future through the innovative use of glass art. Proceeds from the sale of the bottle support the Fort Pitt Block House and Pittsburgh Glass Center. Cost: $50. For more details or to order a bottle, call Fort Pitt Block House Curator Kelly Linn at 412-471-1764.

RAD board proposes funding freeze
Most capital aid also dropped as tax revenues decline
Among those taking hits is the city-Allegheny County Sports & Exhibition Authority, whose request for $2 million to cover a chronic operating deficit at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center was sliced by half.
Others losing out include the organizations that oversee the Benedum Center, Heinz Hall, the Byham Theater and the Senator John Heinz History Center, which were denied capital assistance to make roof or other repairs to those buildings.

OPENING RECEPTION: Friday, November 14, 2008 8.00PM - 10.00PM

The Futurist-like newspeak that is often used to describe new media and web-based artworks is amusing, but limited. Technology is a tool, not necessarily a portal to another universe.

PREDRIVE: After Technology, a commissioned exhibition of new works by five international artists, explores themes of lo-fi digital effects/dysfunctions, ready-made cyber-kitsch, software aesthetics, and the performativity of digital environments in real space. The relationships between drawing and new technologies, performance and new media tools, as well as past and current technologies will be interrogated across the disparate, but related styles of artists Takeshi Murata, Brody Condon, Paperrad, Gretchen Skogerson, and Antoine Catala. The exhibition is curated by Melissa Ragona.

Check out more info here.

John McNally, Amy Knox Brown, Sherrie Flick, and Nancy Krygowski will read for 10 minutes each. Bios follow. It’s $2 at the door, which gets audience members literature read aloud along with free hand-made, wood-fired bread and pizzas. Doors open at 7pm; readings begin at 8pm. It’s BYOB.
Last month Gist Street hit the North Side for Writers in the Gardens; this month they hit Braddock for Wood-Fired Words. The Wood-fired Oven was built by a North Braddock mason using over 75% salvaged and reclaimed materials. Braddock's Community Bread Oven will be churning out free hand-made, wood-fired pizzas topped with ingredients grown organically on Braddock Farms and artisan breads crafted by Braddock’s own Josh Tonies.
This event is made possible by and special thanks to Gist Street Reading Series, Mayor John Fetterman, Joe Bonifate Masonry, and Ray Werner. Come listen and eat.
