WildCard presents the art of Ryder Henry

Looking forward to this!

from WildCard in Lawrenceville

This is another show I'm excited about as a sci-fi fan: East Liberty artist Ryder Henry creates incredible handmade cities and future spaceships from reclaimed materials, as well as creating visual art based on the sculptures. Hard to describe, amazing to see. I hope you'll join us for the opening on Friday, February 11!

WildCard presents Ryder Henry’s “4 Lydia Was…was, is, and will be a great space nation”series on Friday, February 11, from 6-9 p.m.

Pittsburgh, PA

After a variety of visual art including painting, photography, screen printing, and even embroidery, WildCard is proud to present its first show incorporating sculpture, “4 Lydia Was… was, is, and will be a great space nation” featuring the work of multi-disciplinary artist Ryder Henry.

A resident of East Liberty, Henry creates spaceships and a large model city out of repurposed cardboard, as well as creating painting based on his own sculptural works. The city incorporates everyday designs along with fantastic future buildings, while Henry’s spaceship models create a marvelous, anachronistic history of space travel. The model ships and city are made from a variety of household ingredients. Henry’s paintings often reflect views and landscapes from perspectives within the model city.

Henry, whose work has been featured at the Pittsburgh Visionary Arts Festival, the Mattress Factory, Gallery Chiz, Panza Gallery BoxHeart Gallery, says of this new show that it “will feature a new vehicle for conveying small buildings.”

Opening night is Friday, February 11 from 6 to 9pm, featuring free drinks, refreshments, and music. Pieces will be available for viewing as well as for sale. The show will be up at WildCard’s gallery through March.

Gallery 4 in Shadyside, Looking Forward

Most out there (should) know how hard it is for an art gallery to survive. Most that keep their heads above water rely on other means of income whether that be framing, space rental or other services. I'm not aware of Gallery 4's specific situation but I see they are giving it a go via Pgh City Paper ads. Their upcoming shows for the year caught my attention to be sure:

By Tennessee Williams

Directed by Richard Keitel

Presented by Prime Stage Theatre

March 5, 2011–March 13, 2011
Friday & Saturday @ 8:00 PM
Sunday @ 2:30 PM

This warm, deeply personal drama is set in a cramped St. Louis apartment. Tom Wingfield introduces the audience to his family and this memory play of his past. Abandoned by the father, the Wingfields now live in a world of dreams and illusions. His mother, Amanda, refusing to accept the limitations of her children, romanticizes in the belief that she was a wealthy Southern belle with many "gentlemen callers." His sister, Laura, who he dearly loves, is painfully shy and lives in a fantasy world of her father's phonograph records and fragile, miniature, glass animals -- "the menagerie." Can Tom realize his dreams and bring hope to his family?

Paul Thek: Diver, A Retrospective CMOA Heinz Galleries, Pittsburgh PA

Paul Thek: Diver, A Retrospective

February 5–May 1, 2011
Heinz Galleries

Paul Thek: Diver, A Retrospective is the first major museum exhibition in the United States to review the career of this groundbreaking American artist. Thek’s best-known work is unique in form and unusual in its concerns, yet he found common ground with other artists of his generation and gave voice to powerful social and philosophical currents in the broader culture of the 1960s and 1970s. His art could be simultaneously intensely spiritual and insistently profane, lyrical and base. At a time when artists were known for their signature styles, he refused that kind of success, producing architecturally scaled collaborative installations as well as small pieces that were quiet, contemplative, and private. In the 1980s, Thek was largely forgotten, but in the last decade and a half, extensive research on his career has been done in Europe. This will be the first major treatment of his work in his own country.

Related programs: Culture Club, February 17; Lecture: Paul Thek, The Artist’s Artist, February 19; “Bound Together” Book Club, March 3; Lecture: Catholicism, the Body, and the Art of Paul Thek, March 31; Religion and the Body: A Visit to the Relics of St. Anthony’s Chapel, April 2.

The exhibition is co-organized by Lynn Zelevansky, The Henry J. Heinz II Director of Carnegie Museum of Art, and Elisabeth Sussman, Sondra Gilman Curator of Photography at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York.

Support for Paul Thek: Diver, A Retrospective is provided by the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts, The Dietrich Foundation, and Gail and Tony Ganz. Major support for Carnegie Museum of Art’s presentation is provided by The Henry L. Hillman Fund, the Virginia Kaufman Fund, The Fellows of Carnegie Museum of Art, the Beal Publication Fund, Ann and Marty McGuinn, and Agnes Gund.

Professional Development and Creative Workshops for Photographers and Visual Artists

The Silver Eye Center for Photography is pleased to announce the launch of The Bigger Picture, a new initiative designed to connect you to the knowledge, training and resources needed to take your professional career and creative vision to the next level.

The Bigger Picture’s monthly workshops are organized around three tracks — acquiring new business and communication skills; optimizing digital technologies, web and social media to build and retain audiences, patrons and clients; and finding new, innovative ways to stretch your creative vision and practice.

Classes begin this January and are offered at introductory, intermediate and advanced levels. Programs will take place at Silver Eye’s South Side facility and at other venues throughout the city, including Pittsburgh Filmmakers, Robert Morris University and the WYEP-FM Community Education Center.

While developed specifically for fine art and other photographers, these workshops are applicable to any visual artist who wishes to better define their strategic vision or attain their creative and entrepreneurial goals.

The Bigger Picture is made possible in part through a Seed Award from The Sprout Fund and the support of The Fine Foundation.

Become a member of Silver Eye and enjoy course discounts.

Our instructors represent some of the region and country’s most accomplished and innovative practitioners, who will offer expert guidance and inside perspectives on the field. And, in your classes and at our quarterly social gatherings, you’ll meet and network with other participating artists who share your passions and interests.

Full and partial tuition assistance available to eligible students.

We will offer over twenty full and partial scholarships for workshops beginning in February 2011, through the generous support of a Seed Award from The Sprout Fund. GPAC Artist Opportunity Grants Due March 1, 2011

Artist Opportunity Grants

  • Next Deadline: Tuesday, March 1, 2011
  • Eligible Applicants: Individual Artists*
  • Maximum Grant: $1,500

Greater Pittsburgh Artist Opportunity Grants help advance the careers of individual artists by providing funds to support expenses related to specific, extraordinary opportunities that have the potential to significantly impact an artist's work and professional development. Grants range from $250 to $1,500. To get started, download the Guidelines & Application.

An opportunity may be one of many things - An invitation to exhibit at a prestigious gallery, to audition for a major dance company, to study with a mentor or renowned teacher. It might be juried in some way or available only through a competitive selection process. In any case, it should not duplicate experiences the artist has had in the course of his or her ongoing work, and it must lead to professional growth in the artist's career in a clear and meaningful way.

NOTE: This grant does NOT fund art projects or the creation of new works of art. It is intended to fund professional growth opportunities for artists! If you are unclear about this distinction, feel free to contact GPAC staff to discuss your opportunity before applying. For examples of opportunities, please view the previously-funded applicants.

To get started, download the Guidelines & Application or Printable Guidelines . Previously funded grantees, please fill out a Final Report (Survey Monkey).

Art Out Of The Box Project, Call for Artists, Pittsburgh PA

from Bill Peduto's site:

The Art Out of the Box project sets up artist studios in modified trailer boxes in five neighborhoods (Friendship, Lawrenceville, Polish Hill, South Side, and Central Northside). Pittsburgh City artists chosen to participate in each of these “Art Boxes” will have one week (40 hours) to create an original piece of visual art. The Art Boxes will be open to the public so that residents can see the artistic experience firsthand and interact with the artists. The goal is to demystify the creative process, create conversation about the value and importance of local art and to connect artists with community development groups and community residents. The entire process will be filmed by artist Chris Ivey and the resulting works of art — along with the documentaries — will be shown at a public art exhibit as part of the Downtown Gallery Crawl. The artworks will ultimately be donated to community development centers in the neighborhoods where they were created.

The concept was created by artist Samantha McDonough who has a longtime interest in community-based art initiatives and who will be the project manager. Art Out of the Box has the support of the following groups: The Sprout Fund, Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council, Friendship Development Associates, South Side Local Development Company, Polish Hill Civic Association, Central Northside Neighborhood Council and The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust.

Those professional artists — new or established — interested in participating in an Art Box residency can find out more information at the Art Out of the Box website and can download an application here. They’re looking for artists who have “outgoing personalities” and who can engage with the public while working. Applications will be accepted between January 17 and 5 p.m. on February 18, 2011. Chosen artists will receive a fee of $720 and an additional $250 materials stipend.

The Pittsburgh Art Blog

The Pittsburgh Art Blog features selected pittsburgh artists and upcoming exhibits with photos from the artists and galleries. since the major press outlets do not go beyond a directory listing of exhibits, blogs are needed to promote pittsburgh artists and their work. the blog also calls attention to the inferiority complex of pittsburgh art and how it's perpetuated by the major players in town. Started on August 20,2007. pittsburgh area galleries and art venues are listed at the sister site www.PghGalleries.com.

the blog and website are volunteer projects from fine art photographer and pittsburgh artist advocate rick byerly.

Several months ago, during a Penn Avenue Unblurred, an open community painting party took place at Bob Ziller's studio: Spread out on the floor were three 30 ft. sheets of archival watercolor paper. Cheerful participants then rode bicycles with painted tires across the paper - the results are the remarkable paintings on display, priced from $50 to $1000.

Proceeds from the sale of these artworks will benefit the Kullu Valley Bike Project, working in tandem with Kullu Project and PGH East Rotary Club, enabling local bike missionary Grady Minnis to set up a cooperative bike center at the Kullu Orphanage in India's beautiful Kullu Valley.
