LOCAL PHOTOGRAPHERS ANNOUNCE UPCOMING GALLERY EXHIBITION
Dynamic Range – “The F-Stops Here…” June 25, 2011 – August 6, 2011

Local photographers, Tiffany Babinsack and Tamra Jutting, will be exhibiting in a gallery hosted by Artform Gallery and Tattoo. The title Dynamic Range: The F-Stops Here... was chosen as both a play on photographic terms as well as a hint of what people can expect to see at the show: both artists have differing styles from each other and within themselves.

In addition to showing their artwork, Tiffany and Tamra are hoping to enlighten the public about the value of photography as a fine art and the fact that it takes more than a 'nice camera' to get great photographs. Ultimately, it doesn't matter what camera is used - a true photographer can get a great image from a pinhole camera or expensive digital equipment - the key is to know the rules before you break them.

Tamra Jutting
Originally from eastern South Dakota, she notes her father as the reason she got into photography. Thanks to his love of the camera, she became interested at a young age. After dabbling in art for many years, Tamra realized she wanted to make a career out of it. She moved to Western Pennsylvania in 2006 to attend Oakbridge Academy of Arts in Lower Burrell, PA. Tamra states that “…developing a strong understanding of the fundamentals was, and remains, incredibly important to me. I had to learn and experience the history of photography, in both film and digital technologies, in order to be confident calling myself a professional.” Tamra graduated in 2008 with an (AST) Associate's Degree in Specialized Technology: Photography, and was presented with a number of awards. She decided to stay in the area because it reminds her of South Dakota and she has formed many local connections in the industry.

Tamra currently lives in Tarentum, PA and appreciates being able to live in a small town while remaining so close to the city of Pittsburgh. She owns and operates Jutting Arts, concentrating on fine art, portraiture, architectural, commercial, events, the dark room, and anything else she can think of. Tamra has been published several times, and has exhibited in galleries throughout Western PA.

Tiffany Babinsack
Originally from the Philadelphia area, Tiffany began taking photography classes at a very early age. Her first experience in the dark room was developing images from an oatmeal box turned pinhole camera in the 4th grade. While still in high school, she attended college classes at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. Upon graduating, she received a partial scholarship to attend the Art Institute of Philadelphia. Tiffany states that she “…was blessed to attend college during the industry transition from film to digital because it allowed me to have a solid foundation of composition, lighting, exposure and history while still preparing me for success in the digital world.” In 2004, Tiffany moved to the Highland Park area of Pittsburgh, and in 2006 to Tarentum, PA. Along with her husband, Paul, she owns and operates Photographic Memories specializing in senior and wedding photography. In her personal time, she enjoys creating fine art images using everything from pinhole cameras to professional DSLR equipment. She has been published in both books and magazines, has won numerous awards, and has previously exhibited in galleries in both the Philadelphia and Pittsburgh areas.

Dynamic Range – “The F-Stops Here” runs from June 25, 2011 – August 6, 2011. The opening reception will take place from 5:00pm – 11:00pm on June 25, 2011, and is open to the public.

Terra Nova Theatre Group

Monday, June 13, 2011 at 7:00pm - June 22 at 10:00pm

The Greybox Theatre
3595 Butler Street
Pittsburgh, PA

Inspired by conversations during the Town Hall meeting of the Dramatists Guild of America last October, local Pittsburgh playwrights are joining together with the Terra Nova Theatre Group to present new plays in “The Underground Readings” from June 13th to June 22nd. All readings will be performed at 7:00 pm in the Grey Box Theatre in Lawrenceville.

The Underground Readings are presented by the Terra Nova Theatre Group in conjunction with its production of Violet Sharp by William Cameron.

Local playwrights represented in the six-day Underground Readings series include: Kyle Bostian, Gab Cody, Ginny Cunningham, Kim El, Scott Frank, Matt Henderson, Robyne Parrish, and Dennis Schebetta. The content of the plays range from a Minotaur in Crete finding his identity (T.S. Frank’s “The Minotaur: A Tragedy with Puppets”) to a couple finding healing on a fishing trip after witnessing a murder (Kim El’s “Just Fishing”), to a nun grappling with the 1960’s movement (Ginny Cunningham’s Mere Woman) and a contemporary take on King Arthur (Kyle Bostian’s The Death of Art). Also included is Dennis Schebetta’s play, “The Albatross”,winner of the John Gassner New Play Award.

Many celebrated local actors will perform in the various readings, including Elena Alexandratos, Theo Allyn, Ken Bolden, Lisa Ann Goldsmith, Laurie Klatscher, Sam Turich, and Robin Walsh.

All readings are free and will begin at 7:00 pm at the Grey Box Theatre in Lawrenceville (3595 Butler Street).

SCHEDULE OF UNDERGROUND READINGS:

Week One: June 13-15:

Monday, June 13 – “The 2nd American Revolution” by Gab Cody. Everyone is mad as a hatter at this Tea Party. Directed by Sam Turich and featuring Michael Fuller and Laurie Klatscher.

Tuesday, June 14 – “Just Fishin’” by Kim El. Set in 1968, a fishing trip helps urban siblings to cope with witnessing a murder. Directed by Kim El; “The Safe Place” by Robyne Parrish. A dark comedy-romp that explores the idea of finding a “safe place” to be one’s “true self”. Directed by Maggie Balsley and featuring Elena Alexandratos, Theo Allyn, Ken Bolden, Lisa Ann Goldsmith, Kate Gross, Laurel Schroeder, Justin Patrick Mohr, Matt Lamb and Ron Siebert.

Wednesday, June 15 – “The Minotaur: A Tragedy with Puppets” by T.S. Frank. The sins of the people of Crete come back to haunt them when a young prince sails from Greece to slay the Minotaur at the center of the Labyrinth. Plagued by visions of the young adventurer and frightened that he will soon die, Asterion the Minotaur sets out to discover the truth about his past and the secret of his birth before it's too late. Director and cast to be announced.

Week Two: June 20-22:

Monday, June 20 – “The Albatross” by Dennis Schebetta. Winner of the John Gassner Play Award (2009). Years after his wife’s suicide, a still-grieving poetry professor collides with a brilliant student he is mentoring, setting off events that will eventually stir him from his alcohol-induced denial and drown him in the watery weight of the past. Directed by Lisa Jackson-Schebetta and featuring Jeffrey Carpenter, Laci Mosley, Fred Pelzer and Mark Southers.

Tuesday, June 21 – “Strutting and Fretting” by Matt Henderson. Three members of a senior amateur theater group rehearse a play with dreams of moving to New York and making it big before time runs out. Directed by Denise Pullen and featuring Americus Rocco, Ingrid Sonnichsen, and Ken Bolden; “Le Morte d’Art (The Death of Art)” by Kyle Bostian. Is Art really dead? If so, who’s to blame: Art’s adulterous wife and best friend? A fairy (drag) queen or a drug-addled wizard? The quest for the holy grail of Art inevitably leads to Shakespeare in this contemporary romp through medieval legend. Featuring Gab Cody, Sam Turich and Robin Walsh. “Speakeasy” by Kim El. Suburban Coffee House fronts for illegal drug activities when a female narcotics agent comes to make an arrest of the owner only to find that they share a past history. Directed by Wali Jamal.

Wednesday, June 22 – “Mere Woman” by Ginny Cunningham. A nationally prominent nun attempts to control the fallout of the 1960s movement as its sweeps through the nation and her convent, but traumatic events force her to confront a life-changing question: can a woman awakened be faithful to herself, her sisters and her church? Directed by Claire Syler and featuring Susie McGregor Laine, Theo Allyn, Robyne Parrish, Ingrid Sonnichsen, Cathy Yonek, Ken Bolden, and Nathan Hart.

CHARLA KHANNA PRESENTED AT SCCʼS SATELITE GALLERY

CHARLA KHANNA PRESENTED AT SCCʼS SATELITE GALLERY

PITTSBURGH, PA – June 3, 2011 – The Society for Contemporary Craft (SCC) presents a retrospective of the work of New Mexico fiber artist Charla Khanna at BNY Mellon Center in downtown Pittsburgh June 10 through August 14, 2011.

The 16 figurative sculptures included in the exhibition are beautiful expressions of states of being. For the artist, “doll making provides her with the best vehicle to express what she wants to about life, people and ideas.” Her unique, one-of-a kind figures, with their intricate textile designs and hidden amulets, can be seen as manifestations of the human spirit. "Each doll created by Charla Khanna is an adventure in the magic of colored thread, a needle, beads, stones, carefully selected fabrics. and small personal treasures. Each is a journey into the imagination of a beautifully brilliant and passionate artist," states Jane Sauer. Every doll is unique with their very own qualities and dress. Intricate clothing with patchwork designs of radiant hues varies in style for each doll. Some of Khanna’s figures are covered with stones or glass beads; others carry small over-the shoulder pouches or have hidden pockets that contain secret treasures that help decipher their meaning.

Khanna’s work draws inspiration from a range of influences, among them the works of Giotto di Bondone, the Italian painter from Florence in the late Middle Ages, and literature by Robert Frost. Santos—figures carved in wood or ivory—a traditional New Mexican genre of religious sculpture are also influential. Khanna’s process of creating each doll is meticulous. She begins by molding the heads, hands and feet out of paper pulp and adds several coats of modeling paste, then additional coats of gesso and oil glaze. The next step is adding the features to the doll, and Khanna does this by painting with casein and following with varnish. The body is made of cotton fabric, and the silk garments worn by the dolls are pieced, beaded, stitched, patched, and layered.

Of the 16 works in the show, 10 dolls have been borrowed from regional collectors. Khanna is represented nationally by Jane Sauer Gallery in Santa Fe, NM. Six of the featured pieces are new works that have been produced within the last year and are available for sale through SCC.

For sales information or inquires, visit www.contemporarycraft.org or contact Kati Fishbein at 412.261.7003 x 26. SCC is a nonprofit, visual arts organization that presents regional, national and international contemporary art in craft media. The satellite gallery is located in the “T” station lobby of BNY Mellon Bank Center and is open daily through midnight.

Art Out of the Box Schedule 2011

Art Out of the Box is a Mobile Art Studio Project

The Art Box will open into an all-inclusive artist studio space where artists create an original piece of visual art work within a one-week residency. The residencies will take place outdoors in five Pittsburgh neighborhoods during the summer months of 2011: Friendship, Lawrenceville, Polish Hill, Southside, and Central Northside. The project goals are to demonstrate the value of locally produced art and to build strong connections between artists and local communities by inviting resident artists to interact with the public throughout the creative process. The culminating event, a public art exhibit in conjunction with the Downtown Gallery Crawl, will feature the final works and a documentary of the process behind the public art project.

Final Exhibition

The artists’ final works will be displayed for one night in a group exhibition during the Downtown Gallery Crawl in September 2011. A short documentary filmed by artist Chris Ivey will be screened alongside the works to allow viewers to see the entire project from start to end.

Project Goals

Initiating lively conversations about the value of local art by demystifying the creative process is the primary goal of this project. By offering people the opportunity to share in an artistic experience, the project team hopes to form lasting and beneficial relationships between the artists, the community development associates, and community residents.

Project Creator

Art Out of the Box was conceptualized by artist Samantha McDonough in the spring of 2010. The idea was inspired by her desire to share the creative process with the community by moving out of the solitary studio and into the public realm. Samantha has been interested in art within a social context, as well as community-based art initiatives, since 2006 when she volunteered with the Philadelphia based Village of Arts and Humanities. Though she will not be one of the neighborhood artists completing a residency, as Project Manager she will work closely with the artists and each of the organizations supporting the project.

This project is rooted in the collaboration, participation, and the combined efforts of a diverse group of community leaders, artists, and arts organizations who have a vested interest in community growth and the ability for local art to flourish in this region.

East Liberty’s Waffle Shop will be filmed for an episode of “World’s Weirdest Restaurants”

East Liberty’s Waffle Shop will be filmed for an episode of “World’s Weirdest
Restaurants”

Pittsburgh, PA— This Friday June 10th, the Waffle Shop will be filmed for an episode of the Food Channel Canada’s “World’s Weirdest Restaurants” from 10pm - 3am. WWR’s host Bob Blumer will spend the evening cooking, serving, and participating in a packed night of interactive talk shows. The general public is encouraged to come by, dine, and take part.

The evening’s line up will feature local artist’s talk shows designed to instigate intrigue and spur interaction. In addition to waffle cuisine there will be a variety of live interactive shows including Dave English passing his torch as the host of “The Unemployment Show”, T. Foley performing a talk show hosted by a ventriloquist dummy who’s reticent to perform in public, Terry Boyd’s “Anonymous Costumed Guest Hour” as well as cameos from other local favorites.

Waffle Shop is a neighborhood restaurant that produces and broadcasts a livestreaming talk show with its customers and operates a changeable storytelling billboard on its roof. The shop is a public lab that brings together people from all walks of life to engage in dialogue and experimentation This public art project/restaurant has become a fixture in its East Liberty neighborhood and has started to garner national attention.

Inspired by the Seinfeld episode where Kramer rescues a Merv Griffin Show set from the trash and sets it up in his living room, Jon Rubin, a CMU School of Art professor of Contextual Practice, built a ’70s-style talk-show set aiming to “use waffles to lure people into public storytelling.” A dedicated host—ometimes one of Rubin’s students, sometimes a community member—sits at a desk on a raised stage and engages the diverse cafe clientele in impromptu and completely unpredictable conversations that range, as Rubin puts it, “from Lady Gaga to conspiracy theories to unemployment to ghosts.” The talkshow “episodes” are streamed live online, and the most compelling ones are archived at www.waffleshop.org

Produced by Vancouver-based Paperny Films, Inc. for Food Network Canada, "World's Weirdest Restaurants" showcases a wide variety of unique eating establishments around the world. There are many kinds of "weird" and culinary adventurer Bob Blumer (of the award-winning television series "Glutton for Punishment") is on a mission to explore the full range - whether it's an eclectic environment, an eccentric food focus, or a unique, high-concept theme restaurant. Part travel, part food, "World's Weirdest Restaurants" is Bob's tribute to fellow food lovers who have taken their passions to the extreme.

The Waffle Shop is supported by the School of Art at Carnegie Mellon University, East Liberty Development Inc, We Do Property, and the sale of waffles.
