Pittsburgh, PA

On Friday, October 7th from 6 to 9 pm, WildCard will host the world premiere of “A Bee’s Experience,” a group show featuring the paper cut work of Kathryn Carr, Bec Young, and Stacey Malasky. Carr’s art was previously presented at Wildcard in June of 2010. Kathryn Carr has focused her talents on the art of paper cutting since 2008. She turned all her attention to this art form because she was drawn to the bold imagery of the silhouette and the intriguing shadows they cast. Carr’s whimsical designs begin by sketching an idea to give it a sense of movement
and playfulness. She then draws the image again and uses a scissor or knife blade to carefully cut away paper to reveal the image.

Many of her original paper cut images are featured in her line of greeting cards. These cards can be found in shops and galleries in Pittsburgh and in a growing number of other locations in the United States. Kathryn has lived in various places throughout the world and currently resides in St. Augustine Florida.

The idea to collaborate on a paper cutting show was spurred by a casual conversation a year ago between Pittsburgh paper cut artists Bec Young and Kathryn Carr. Both desired to showcase the beauty and uniqueness of paper cut art. Young asked Stacey Malasky, a friend and fellow paper cut artist from Ohio, if she would like to be apart of the show as well. The three decided to focus their show on bees; Stacey is a bee keeper and all three ladies wanted to heighten public
awareness of the plight of bees (check out this link to learn more about why honeybees are so important — and what ordinary citizens can do to help: http://www.pbs.org/wnet/nature/episodes/silence-of-the-bees/video-podcast/69/)

The show runs from Friday, October 7th through Sunday, November 13th. WildCard will host an opening night reception with free drink & snacks. No rsvp is required.

The Pittsburgh Art Blog

The Pittsburgh Art Blog features selected pittsburgh artists and upcoming exhibits with photos from the artists and galleries. since the major press outlets do not go beyond a directory listing of exhibits, blogs are needed to promote pittsburgh artists and their work. the blog also calls attention to the inferiority complex of pittsburgh art and how it's perpetuated by the major players in town. Started on August 20,2007. pittsburgh area galleries and art venues are listed at the sister site www.PghGalleries.com.

the blog and website are volunteer projects from fine art photographer and pittsburgh artist advocate rick byerly.
