Beginning in 1896, Curtis photographed Native Americans, providing an extensive documentation of their life including customs, habitations,
and dress. Curtis produced a record of the tribes from the Southwest, Great Plains, Pacific Northwest and Alaska. The first volume of The North American Indian was published in 1907. The final and twentieth
volume was published 27 years later. Only 250 sets of this twenty volume series were produced. The North American Indian is a highly prized and
rare commodity on the photographic sales market.

  1. Perhaps more interesting was the reconstruction of a Curtis stage show from 1911, The Indian Picture Opera (2006).

A contemporary version of it was released on DVD and can be searched on Amazon.

Original music was recreated, and combined with 36 minutes of E.S. Curtis narration. The production reveals Curtis's interpretation and demeanor from the era.

It's thought provoking, and discussion provoking.
