spoken word artist Vanessa German Friday June 20,21 Harris Theater

Nationally recognized Pittsburgh-based spoken word artist Vanessa German will be debuting her first one-woman show as part of Pittsburgh Center for the Arts' Biennial 2008, in partnership with the Three Rivers Arts Festival and the New Hazlett Theater's Women in Art program. Testify, a multimedia performance, combines spoken word with film, visual art, traditional theater, music, folk tale, and movement. Inspired by the contradiction between Pennsylvania's 2007 title as "America's Most Livable City" and 2006 nationwide leading black homicide rates, Testify uses the first hand stories, filmed and included in the live performance, of victims and perpetrators of violent crime, community leaders and members throughout the Pittsburgh area.

Harris Theater, 809 Liberty Ave in downtown Pittsburgh.

Friday, June 20 – 7:00pm ... Saturday, June 21 – 2:00, 7:00 and 9:00pm. Tickets are $5 .Vanessa German was first recognized on the national spoken word scene when she won 2004's Slam Bush National Championship, beating more than 70 poets from around the nation to represent and win for Pittsburgh in Miami, Florida. Vanessa most recently appeared at the 2007 POPTECH! in Camden, Maine, sharing the stage with international thought leaders, authors and artist. Vanessa's POPTECH performance can be viewed online at www.poptech.org. She recently completed a commissioned spoken word performance for Boston College's Global Corporate Citizenship Conference. She will be a featured artist at both the 2008 Hollyhock Leadership conference in Vancouver British Columbia, and at SNAP!, a global gathering for leaders in Science, Nature, Art and Politics, www.snapgathering.com. Tom Atlee, founder of the Co-Intelligence Institute says, "Vanessa German, a teacher and poet whose presence at the August Story Field Conference had a lasting and reverberating impact on many of our lives, embodies a force of nature."
