Randy Gilson is a great person who has done a tremendous amount to beautify the North Side for over 18 years! Help him renovate the North Side map on the Randyland Building!
This year, I'd like to focus on refreshing and restoring the map of
the Northside on the Jacksonia Street face of the Randyland yellow
building.
This is one of the main attractions of the building and it has become
outdated and has been worn down and beaten by the weather. Many of the
labels have faded or peeled off. Much of the paint has worn off and many
other pieces and markers have been lost.

Tattoo Artist Seth Leibowitz recently broke his right wrist which has put his business on hold for 16 weeks so he decided to try out oil painting with his
left. Amazingly it didn't take long to get to the point where he is now
auctioning off talented portraiture work which will appeal to Pens fans out there. The auctions start today, June 4, so head over to Artform on Facebook to check them out.

Pittsburgh and Braddock Murals: I especially like when they do the more in-depth looks at the murals which tend to justify more information, just click on the more info icon once you have selected a mural. Great project!
Now all we need is a more balanced and varied approach to the types of mural/public art in the region in terms of language, subject matter and mediums.

Features Pittsburgh, PA artists! Thanks to Outpost Journal for mentioning PghGalleries.com.
Outpost is an annual, non-profit print publication on innovative art, design and community action from cities that have been traditionally underexposed beyond their local contexts. Each beautifully produced and visually engaging issue of Outpost focuses on a single urban location and comes packaged with a limited edition print by an artist from the featured city. Outpost is a journey into the creative heart of a place, and via features like Secretly Famous (profiles of the most infamous artsy locals), guerrilla engagements with tourist attractions, historical explorations, mapping projects, and deep dives into artist collectives and organizations, Outpost exposes the myriad ways in which unique local communities arise through creative collaboration and production.
Exploratory and playful, critical with a sense of levity, and inspired by hand-drawn maps, flags, totem poles, poorly pixelated iPhone photos, moody landscapes, and the spirit of adventure, Outpost is dedicated to strengthening ties between communities and spreading new ideas about how creative culture can change the world. Be sure to check out our inaugural issue on Pittsburgh, PA, out now!
also being sold locally in Pittsburgh at Wildcard, the Mattress Factory & the Warhol Museum.

(check them out this unblurred friday oct 7, 2011)
from Academy of the South Side now The Conservatory of Oil
Painting and moving to *5001 Penn Ave, Pittsburgh, PA 15224*
Hi everyone!
It's been awhile since we've had much going on, but we've been busy in the meantime and are ready to get back into action. We have lots of fun stuff coming up and are hoping for a great close to 2011 in anticipation of a banner year in 2012.
First up, we're holding a class this fall! Many thanks to Jason and Mel at Artisan Tattoo Gallery, an upcoming brand new addition to the Penn Ave arts district, for their generosity in providing us a studio space in their building! Yes, we are moving out of the South Side after a long run, and our studio for the upcoming term will be located at *5001 Penn Ave, Pittsburgh, PA 15224*. We will be holding one class, Portrait Painting, taught by Academy instructors Tim Meehan and Shervin Iranshahr, to get back into the swing of things and get ready for many more to come. We are going to have a brand new model every week, so we're really looking forward to some exciting and interesting paintings. As always, the class is available to all skill levels, and feel free to pass this on to others who may be interested.
The details:
*Portrait Painting*
October 15th through December 3rd
Saturdays, 3-6PM
8 week class - $200
For additional details and registration, please visit our website at
www.academyofthesouthside.com.
Next, in celebration of our return to teaching classes and the move to Penn Ave, we will be participating in the *October 7th* First Friday gallery crawl! More details will be announced in the coming weeks, but mark your calendars for an evening of art, music, and good times. We're honored and excited to be holding the first show at Artisan and hope to see lots of old and new friends there.
And last but not least, we can officially announce that we will be rechristening The Academy under the new name of *The Conservatory of Oil Painting*! It has taken some time but we have filed our paperwork and are awaiting confirmation of our nonprofit status, which will allow us to pursue new and exciting opportunities and develop into a permanent resource for artists and art lovers in our community.
Here's our mission statement:
The mission of The Conservatory of Oil Painting is to consistently deliver a supportive and inspiring experience of the highest possible quality devoted to the instruction, creation, and exhibition of representational art.
With your help, we are excited to try to live up to that mission. We'll have more changes and developments to announce in the coming months, but we wanted to let you all know the exciting news and get a feel for what you can expect in the future.
As time goes on, we will be going through transferring our website, email address, branding, etc., but in the meantime, please continue to use this email address and our current website (www.academyofthesouthside.com) for all correspondence and information.
A sincere thank you to everyone for your patience and support. We are really looking forward to this new chapter in our history and hope you are all a part of it.
-Tim, Shervin and Dan

Due to logistical issues, #pyrotopia is rescheduled for Spring 2012. Stay tuned for new dates, location and call for artists.
Pyrotopia seeks visual and performing artists to participate in Pyrotopia: First Annual Festival of Fire Arts on October 7th and 8th, 2011 at UnSmoke Artspace in Braddock, PA and adjacent grounds. We will consider any works of art, performance and other forms of creative expression which either directly incorporate or thematically reference fire or related media, such as electricity and light.
Full details, images, application form, selection criteria and contact info are available at the Pyrotopia website:
Pyrotopia is being organized and produced by a group of Pittsburgh artists with experience working with fire in art and performance, producing large scale events and spectacles, and teaching fire arts skills. As artists, we love the medium of fire in its wide variety of applications, and we wish to ignite the public’s imagination and appreciation, too.
Pyrotopia has a comprehensive mission: To showcase and celebrate fire and light in art and performance; To provide artists using fire and light with a dedicated exhibition and to support them with artist fees and resources; To share their work with patrons of all ages and demographics, with other event producers and with museum and gallery curators in Pittsburgh and beyond; To bring artists from different disciplines together for collaborations; To establish a precedent for fostering greater funding for art and performance of this genre; To offer unique learning opportunities through artist talks, demonstrations, classes and workshops in fire-related skills and topics; and to promote the safe use of fire for creative expression and performance through education, fire safety training and sharing of best practices.
Pyrotopia will be free, family-friendly and open to the public. We expect a large turn-out from Braddock and the greater Pittsburgh area. Programming throughout the day and night will appeal to a wide range of interests and ages.
The festival schedule is outlined below:
Friday, October 7th
6 pm to 12 am – Live fire art, events, and performances
Saturday, October 8th
12 pm to 5 pm – Exhibition, workshops, demos and other interactive fire-related programming
6 pm to 12 am – Live fire art, events and performances
We will consider the following Artist submissions: performance, sculpture, games, interactive installations, 2D and 3D visual art (painting, photography, etc.), video, demonstrations and more. Fire can be used directly in the work, used as a significant theme or displayed in the work, or be employed in the creation of the work. Artists may submit applications for existing or new work that can be completed according to the production deadlines outlined below.
Work employing live fire will occur outdoors on the grounds of UnSmoke Artspace. Work not employing live fire will primarily be displayed inside the UnSmoke Artspace Gallery, or as appropriate, on the outside grounds. The Pyrotopia website contains site maps and descriptions on the available exhibition and performance spaces.
See the Pyrotopia website for information on funding and in-kind support for Artists.
Artists employing live fire must be 18 years of age or older.
SUBMISSION SCHEDULE
Friday, March 25, 2011: Call for Artists issued; web site open for submissions
Monday, May 16, 2011: Proposals must be submitted online by midnight, Eastern Standard Time. All submissions must be received through the online system.
Early June, 2011: Artists will be notified about participation. Contracts will be issued to Artists who accept Pyrotopia’s invitation to participate.

For five years Sandow Birk has been creating his epic body of work American Qur’an. In this ongoing series, Birk employs traditional Islamic calligraphy and painting techniques to illustrate the entire 114 Suras of the Qur'an. Using ink, gouache and a hand-lettered “font” based on graffiti tagging, he illuminates the verses with relevant scenes from contemporary American life. A selection of these Suras will be on view. This exhibition is the first in an ongoing series titled TheWord of God, which will examine major religious texts through the lens of contemporary art.
The Word of God Exhibitions and Project:
At a time when political parties fight viciously for the higher moral ground, when controversy reigns in the building of mosques, and when bigotry, abortion, and same-sex marriage are wedges of division in our culture there still remains room for interfaith understanding. The Warhol has, in its sixteen year history, presented difficult or controversial imagery and art in order to spark community dialogue. The dialogues and visitor experiences from such encounters with art and images are powerful and potentially community changing.

Chris Ivey:
“I was hired to document the tearing down of the high rises. At the same time I interviewed some of the residents who lived in the high rises and they weren’t happy at all because of the spectacle that was before them. They were really angry. It was their home, it was where they used to live, some for 30 years or more. Even though in many ways it wasn’t the best place to live it was all they had and to see strangers having fun by shooting paintballs at the block left them furious.”

You won't want to miss this exhibit! It includes work from iconographer Cameon (Simeon Larivonoff), who curator Heidi Tucker has spoken with and has made the effort to bring his work to light for this show. Check the link to learn more about iconography, Cameon will be the subject of an upcoming Sundance documentary. I'm expecting some photos to post as well of the exhibit in general.

Prior to this blog post I learned about artist Becky Slemmons' project and I found the concept compelling to say the least. It's good to see this has taken form:
Gatherings
a socially-based, performative art project
September 5, 2010 to present date and on-going
“Gatherings,” an on-going socially-based, performative art project began on September 5, 2010 and continues presently. The project (an assignment the artist gave herself) goes like this: Ms. Slemmons will attend one or more different places of worship in Pittsburgh every week for a year (or however long it takes to reach her goal of 100 visits), choosing temples, churches, synagogues and mosques primarily in neighborhoods without abundant access to art. She has made a white dress, which she wears to every worship visit. In response to each visit (in her own studio between visits), she adds pieces of fabric and/or embroidery to the dress; with the accumulation of experiences, the dress grows and changes in appearance. She creates a page of drawings for each worship experience (during each visit, if possible) and documents gatherings with photographs, off-site video and this blog: www.gatheringspittsburgh.blogspot.com/ . (Look here to find the location of her next visit.) At year's end, she plans to exhibit the work in a yet-to-be-determined Pittsburgh art gallery.
The impetus for “gatherings” is as follows: Creative folk and worship places: in Pittsburgh you can't go a block without running into one or the other. But can it be, that never the twain shall meet? Of course not. And when they do, what form will the search for common ground take, between spiritual ritual and the ritual of art-making? Could an art project based on the cultural tradition of attending services remain non-religious in purpose, while providing arts exposure to Pittsburgh communities that normally do not have access? Raise hope for tolerance? This creative soul says yes.
Through “gatherings,” I wish to question whether the ritual of art-making and the spiritual ritual are not at odds, with hopes that this starting point will prove fertile ground to launch new opportunities for appreciation of, involvement in, and exposure to art. I also wish to raise an awareness of and hope for tolerance.
I am not a specifically religious person (I do not embrace a specific set of beliefs), but I am fascinated with:
• The role that belief plays in society, the need it fulfills for those who partake.
• The similarities in differently-labeled spiritual mythologies.
• The conflict unfortunately perpetuated.
• I am intrigued by people who don't need proof.

The Pittsburgh Art Blog features selected pittsburgh artists and upcoming exhibits with photos from the artists and galleries. since the major press outlets do not go beyond a directory listing of exhibits, blogs are needed to promote pittsburgh artists and their work. the blog also calls attention to the inferiority complex of pittsburgh art and how it's perpetuated by the major players in town. Started on August 20, 2007.pittsburgh area galleries and art venues are listed at the sister site www.PghGalleries.com.
the blog and website are volunteer projects from fine art photographer and pittsburgh artist advocate rick byerly, www.RickByerly.com.
