Unicorn Mountain Releases New Anthology The Black Forest

Unicorn Mountain Releases New Anthology The Black Forest:
A Collection of Art, Comics and Folk Tales from Western Pennsylvania and Beyond

Book Release Party 6-10 p.m., Fri., June 3, 2011 at The Andy Warhol Museum

May 15, 2011 -- Pittsburgh-based art collective Unicorn Mountain is proud to announce the publication of our third anthology, The Black Forest: A Collection of Art, Comics and Folk Tales from Western Pennsylvania and Beyond.
While The Black Forest is first and foremost a showcase of the finest creators in Pittsburgh’s vibrant underground art scene -- and like-minded artists from elsewhere -- the collection is also a deeper, darker and more unified work than the collective's previous volumes. Steeped in old world tradition, the stories and images of The Black Forest capture the rustic, eerie mood of the lonely woodlands that stretch across rural Western Pennsylvania. Strange creatures hide behind every tree.

Five years in the making, The Black Forest also marks a great leap forward artistically for Unicorn Mountain. Edited and curated by Sprout Public Art manager Curt Gettman, the 228-page softcover color anthology includes the work of more than 25 local, national and international creators.

Contributors include renowned indie-comic superstar Theo Ellsworth (Capacity), Frank Santoro (Storeyville, Cold Heat) and Rina Ayuyang (Whilrwind Wonderland). The book also features a number of works by Unicorn Mountain favorites such as Kathleen Lolley, Ben Kehoe, Chris Cornwell, Bill Wehmann, Masha Vereshchenko, JuliACKS, Jenifer Cooney and many more. The anthology’s cover is by local art sensation Andy Kehoe.

"Regardless of what [some people] say about Pittsburgh, do not be fooled by fools: this town rules. Case in point has to be Unicorn Mountain. A hep chunk of book with lotsa local art, music and writing with a healthy handshake to outlying neighbors from New York and Easthampton, MA. Wicked!"

The Pittsburgh Art Blog

The Pittsburgh Art Blog features selected pittsburgh artists and upcoming exhibits with photos from the artists and galleries. since the major press outlets do not go beyond a directory listing of exhibits, blogs are needed to promote pittsburgh artists and their work. the blog also calls attention to the inferiority complex of pittsburgh art and how it's perpetuated by the major players in town. Started on August 20,2007. pittsburgh area galleries and art venues are listed at the sister site www.PghGalleries.com.

the blog and website are volunteer projects from fine art photographer and pittsburgh artist advocate rick byerly.
