Magarac Attack in Market Square June 14 to June 19 2008 3 rivers arts festival event

Magarac Attack in Market Square
Saturday, June 14 : 12 - 8 pm Sunday, June 15 : 12 - 8 pm Monday, June 16 : 12 - 8 pm Tuesday, June 17 : 12 - 8 pm Wednesday, June 18 : 12 - 8 pm Thursday, June 19 : 12 - 8 pm

Larger-than life sculptures of Pittsburgh folk-hero Joe Magarac take over Market Square in Magarac Attack. Incorporating puppetry, sculpture and other media, artist teams have created new interpretations of the sometimes-controversial mythological steelworker that challenge traditional ideas of race, history and gender.

Joe Magarac's impressive feats place him in the company of American folk heroes like John Henry. According to one legend, the eastern European steel worker could work 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, doing the work of 29 men. Magarac Attack Artists worked with community groups in Homestead, Braddock, Lawrenceville and the Hill District to gather ideas about the folk icon, crafting their three enormous installations based on those personal histories.
The sculptures are accompanied by Robert Qualters' Steel Heritage paintings, thanks to the Homestead Economic Recovery Group ad the Mon Valley Initiative.

Participating artists include Tavia LaFollette, Michelle Gregio, Emory Biko, Debbie Bobeck, Kirsten Ervin, Antonio Coltaban, Shannon Fink and Kate Murtaugh.
