The Pittsburgh Art Blog
pittsburgh galleries is reborn anew as The Pittsburgh Art Blog. the blog features selected pittsburgh artists and upcoming exhibits with photos from the artists and galleries. since the major press outlets do not go beyond a directory listing of exhibits, blogs are needed to promote pittsburgh artists and their work. the blog also calls attention to the inferiority complex of pittsburgh art and how it's perpetuated by the major players in town. Started on August 20, 2007.pittsburgh area galleries and art venues are listed at the sister site www.PghGalleries.com.the blog and website are volunteer projects from fine art photographer and pittsburgh art advocate rick byerly, www.RickByerly.com.

Encyclopedia Destructica’s Friday, February 27, 2009 Book Release
@ the Brillobox, 4104 Penn Ave
8:30 pm READING with boice-Terrel Allen, Red Bob, Kristofer Collins, and Michelle Stoner. 10:30 pm ED's 4th BIRTHDAY DANCE PARTY with DJ THERMOS
this event also marks Encyclopedia Destructica’s 4th Birthday (and 20th book), and as such will feature a post-reading Dance Party!
Edited by Jerome Crooks, Coatlicue 2 features a collection of work by 29 writers and 18 artists. Contributors include: Renée Alberts, boice-Terrel Allen, Nikki Allen, Adam Atkinson, Nils Balls, Beano, Tony Burfield, Leslie Clague, Morgan Cahn, Kristofer Collins, Jen Cooney, Claire Donato, Angele Ellis, Ryan Emmett, Mike-Frank G. Epitropoulos, Kevin Finn, Karl Hendricks, Ben Hernstrom, David Howe, Red Bob Jungkunz, Ben Kehoe, Jenny Lynn Keller, Peter Kosloski, Mike Larson, Jonathan Loucks, Melodie Manojlovich, Tony Mancus, Mallory Monroe, Colin Noonan, Curt Riegelnegg, Nick Rogers, Adrienne Rozzi, Thomas Scioli, Ed Steck, Michelle Stoner, Matthew Torti, Mary Tremonte, Heidi Tucker, Masha Vereshchenko, Stacey Waite, Marcel Walker, Shawn Watrous, Don Wentworth, Wayne Wise, Mike Woodfill, and Katherine Young.
This anthology includes poetry, two philosophy papers, short fiction, sketch essays, non fiction essays, an exposé, non-sequitur illustrations, and of course, is handsomely hand-bound by Encyclopedia Destructica. In fact, there are 16 cover illustrations printed on 6 different colors for a grand total of 96,000,000 cover variations. Collect them all!Editor Jerome Crooks says, “The only qualification for inclusion in the book was that the writer be from, or spent time, in Pittsburgh. I didn't expect there to be any similarities beyond a shared location, or the mention of a local personality, or event. What I found combing through the submissions was a shared set of themes. The tone was similar. Unromantic and unflinching, writer after writer confessed, faced their fears, and challenged themselves creatively. They entertain the entire time.”
Admission to the book release and reading is free. For those arriving for the Dance Party after 10:30 pm there will be a $2 door charge. Coatlicue 2 will retail for $10.

Artists' residency, technology to blend for innovation
TRIBUNE-REVIEWMonday, January 19, 2009
The "Old and New Media Residency" enables artists based in Pittsburgh to take three months to work on projects in deeplocal's office and Encyclopedia Destructica's studios. During the residency, an artist would network with deeplocal's clients, get help with applying for grants and be introduced to people interested in art through an artist lecture and exhibition.
Artists will have access to deeplocal's technological tools and Encyclopedia Destructica's print-making equipment. They'll get up to $1,500 for supplies and receive artist access to Pittsburgh Filmmakers/Pittsburgh Center for the Arts. Staff at deeplocal will dedicate a day each week to assisting the artists and teaching business principles.

Weekly Binding Parties at Encyclopedia Destructica
Encyclopedia Destructica creates art-zines (magazines with book aesthetics) inspired by the need to explore and export contemporary arts/culture in a way that’s accessible and easy to engage in, providing a forum for a primordial dialogue between artists.
To produce each issue, Encyclopedia Destructica holds weekly binding parties, gatherings where artists, friends, & the interested general public come to the Destructica studios and work on the production of the zines. Created and distributed in a DIY fashion, Encyclopedia Destructica promotes this attitude as well as providing support and resources for local artists to create their own book/zine projects. Encyclopedia Destructica is interested in community and dialogue throughout the creative process with the artists and editors in the process of creating an issue, the artwork within the pages of an issue, artists and participants as they work on production in binding sessions, and the viewer engaging the issue and the artwork within.
Encyclopedia Destructica holds almost weekly binding parties on Wednesday evenings. Binding parties are open to the public, are are gatherings where we work on the production of Destructica's zines and books. Email zine@encyclopediadestructica.com to join our binding party email list.
