Pgh Society of Illustrators Newsletter, Pittsburgh PA Art

Check out the Pgh Society of Illustrator's Nov 2010 newsletter. It's well put together, minus some photo resolution issues (I'm a harsh critic when it comes to that).

Pittsburgh Society of Illustrators (PSI) was founded in 1997. We are a future-oriented professional group that sees no limits to the possibilities of the narrative art form of illustration, serving not only all print markets, but the web/interactive, animation, interior design, outdoor exhibit, and collectors' markets as well. We are the fourth largest Society of Illustrators in the United States, with every technique and process eclectically represented. PSI exists to fill the specific needs for an organization with which all Pittsburgh area illustrators and other persons interested in the aims of the society (buyers, gallery directors, educators, etc.) can affiliate. In order to achieve our general aims, PSI undertakes activities such as social gatherings, reception and entertainment of visitors, lectures and discussions, fund-raisers, exhibitions, meetings of professional and related groups, and similar activities. We organize workshops, field trips, and instructional materials to raise professional, student, and patron awareness of the illustration art form.

The Pittsburgh Art Blog

The Pittsburgh Art Blog features selected pittsburgh artists and upcoming exhibits with photos from the artists and galleries. since the major press outlets do not go beyond a directory listing of exhibits, blogs are needed to promote pittsburgh artists and their work. the blog also calls attention to the inferiority complex of pittsburgh art and how it's perpetuated by the major players in town. Started on August 20,2007. pittsburgh area galleries and art venues are listed at the sister site www.PghGalleries.com.

the blog and website are volunteer projects from fine art photographer and pittsburgh artist advocate rick byerly.

Pittsburgh Visual Artists: Illustrators, Photographers, Digital Artists: A Warning Story about the book Colorful Illustrations 93°C

A story which just broke a few days ago online is one both visual artists and art patrons need to know about. A book named Colorful Illustrations 93°C is being sold with stolen images and interviews from 93 artists across the world. The images were downloaded from the Little Chimp Society , some even with watermarks and copyright notices and made in this book which is being sold. The full story is here and images of the fraudulent book here . These criminals even included a cd of all of the images as well. Please spread the word about this crime and keep in mind how your images are displayed online. I hop that pro bono copyright and trademark lawyers step forward to help out the artist involved as well as government entities.

The one thing I noticed about the watermarks and copyrights is that they were artistic enough that they blended in with the image so my advice is to to make it stand out and apart from the image and don't worry about the end result. Displaying images online is only to get exposure and sell whatever products you've spent a lot of time in creating so people shouldn't get the full experience online anyways! You can also show lower resolution images which can't end up being used for much of anything but there's a line there of what you were willing to look at yourself. So spread the word, I know a lot of artists online who don't even watermark and copyright their images.

Update: Unfortunately I found out that talented Pittsburgh artist Mike Egan had his images stolen and used in the book.

Pittsburgh Art, Comics, Writing, Illustrations and Music: Unicorn Mountain

If you've never been to Unicorn Mountain it's time to make a trip... Unicorn Mountain, http://www.unicornmountain.com/ , is a publisher of independent comics, art, literature, and music which features undergound Pittsburgh artists. In this blog I'll briefly cover the details of Volume 1 which includes the work of over 70 local writers, illustrators and musicians. For $10 you get 129 pages of creative comics, illustrations, writing plus the 19 track cd. Crazy.

So maybe you're not into comics or not sure. Doesn't matter. From thought provoking to bizarre and even goofy you see into the minds of many artists via comics, writing and music. Not to mention you're supporting a group intent on trying to keep artists from leaving Pittsburgh and giving them outlets. Check it out because it's worth it. That and Unicorn Mountain can continue it's work and put out Volme 3.

There's no need to wait to read the blogs on their other great releases including Volume 2 and Wolfman's Got Nards, my personal favorite, because they're all worth owning and the price is right. Get started on buying Volume 1 here .

Also Publisher Curt Gettman was good enough to send me an update on some of the band members who have moved on to different projects so you can refer back to this blog and follow up on the bands which you want to check out around Pittsburgh. Below the band and track listing you will find which bands are known to still be playing live. If you want to find out more about the underground music scene check out http://www.nevertellmetheodds.org/ .

Unicorn Mountain - Volume 1 Anthology

This 129 page comic anthology, literary journal, and music compilation includes work by over 70 Pittsburgh writers, illustrators, and bands.

COMICS

Illustrator Joe Deferrari and writer Alan Dubinsky, the guys behind the independent comic and 7" inch single series "Killing Cupid", contribute a deep space action story entitled "Cosmotopia". Joe also serves as the art director for Unicorn Mountain.

Jeff Shreckengost, noted painter and guitarist (1985, Paytoilets, Young Men's Department), delivers a twisted sword and sorcery epic. He'll kill us for bringing this up, but Jeff's great-grandfather is Max Schreck (the actor who played Nosferatu!). Shhh...

Dave Bernabo and Tim Brown contribute a story both psychogical and poetic. In addition to pursuing writing, Dave plays in the bands Vale and Year and Johnathan Swimmingly. Best known for playing drums for local psych-rockers Harangue, Tim is responsible for putting together the Unicorn Mountain CD compilation.

Illustrator Beano Gessler and writer Curt Gettman have collaborated to tell "Starfire", an autobiographical childhood tale set in the waning days of the nuclear age. Beano has previously self-published the well-received comic zine "Make Way For Victory". In addition to his writing contributions, Curt is the publisher and chief editor of the Unicorn Mountain anthology.

With his story "Pigoney Island", Chris Matranga gives us an imaginary place full of "freaks, goons and other oddities". In addition to his beautiful pen and ink work, Chris plays drums for the local rock band Young Men's Department.

There's a strange knock at the door in the contribution from artist Tom Hall and writer Curt Gettman. The result is a paranoid update on the Twilight Zone style of sci-fi. "Fangs of the Panda in Polynesian Love Fest" harkens back to the humorous band comics and cartoons of the sixties and seventies. Written by FOTP band members Michael Baltzer, Benjamin Macensky and Eric Webber (with art by Michael and Ben).

Writer and artist Dave McKulka gives us "Happytime" and with it a welcome philosophical weight to the anthology. A much-anticipated late addition to the collection!

The prolific Beano Gessler contributes a second story - this time with writer Josh Hehr. "F. Scott Wimbley: A Success Story" explores the psychological consequences of time travel gone awry. At the time of this writing, we don't know what kind of story to expect from artist Owl Kahol - but we do know it will be incredible. In addition to being a crack illustrator and graphic designer, Owl has played drums (yet another drummer) for the bands Glowinthedark, Kloaking Device, and Meet The Butcher.

FEATURE WRITING

Justin Cummings, best known for the self-published taxi zine "Junket", tells a previously unpublished story of theft and late-night taxi driving. Illustrated by Jeff Shreckengost.A transplanted PA native, Mike D. Dwyer delivers a surprising, matter-of-fact narrative on the ones left behind. Illustrated by Nell Hendricks.Trapped in the suburbs, Ross Golowicz wonders whether there's an easier way. Illustrated by Nell & Maeve Hendricks.Freelance writer Karryn Lintelman strives to out-smart and out-bike herself, with illustrations by Bill Wehmann. Writer Shahrzad Samadzadeh suffers from transmuted addictions and designer shoes, with illustrators Nell Hendricks and Jim Lingo. Shahrzad also serves as the editor for the feature writing portion of Unicorn Mountain.

Illustrations of Catastrophe: Tea and Absinthe,Saturday, March 8th, 2008 @ Mattress Factory

MATTRESS FACTORY TO HOST CURATOR, ARTIST DISCUSSION OF ILLUSTRATIONS OF CATASTROPHE AND REMOTE TIMES

Apocalyptic beverages – tea and absinthe – will be served

http://www.mattress.org/

PITTSBURGH, PA (February 22, 2008) – What will be your beverage of choice during the apocalypse? Tea or Absinthe? Both libations will be offered on Saturday, March 8th, during Illustrations of Catastrophe: Tea and Absinthe, a conversation with the curator and artists about the tenth installment in the Gestures Exhibition Series, currently on view at the Mattress Factory.

“The title and theme of the exhibition, illustrations of catastrophe and remote times, refers to a page from a larger collaborative essay, ‘The Domain of the Great Bear,’ written by the artists Robert Smithson and (Pittsburgh-native) Mel Bochner in 1966, describing an apocalyptic landscape in poetic and dramatic prose,” explains guest curator Heather Pesanti.

Ms. Pesanti, along with artists Fabrizio Gerbino, Rebecca Einhorn, Renee Ickes, Ben Kinsley, Christiane D. Leach, David Montano, John Rubin, Jairan Sadeghi, David Wettergreen and Brett Yasko, will be on hand to discuss the show, their respective pieces, the decisions made during the creative process, and any other topics posed by the audience and panel.

“The Mattress Factory is always attempting new ways to engage our visitors,” says Anna Fitzpatrick, Director of Education at the Mattress Factory. “We are very excited to provide this innovative event designed to encourage meaningful dialogue between artist, curator and visitor. The informal setting and unique spin will surely make for an educational, fun and memorable event.”

Illustrations of Catastrophe: Tea and Absinthe will take place on Saturday, March 8, at 2:00 PM in the museum’s lobby. A guided tour of illustrations of catastrophe and remote times will preceed the conversation at 1:00 PM. The event is FREE with paid museum admission.
