Seven Guitars by August Wilson

Directed by Mark Clayton Southers

Seven Guitars focuses on the 1948 funeral of one of the seven main characters, showing events leading to the funeral in flashbacks. True to its mission to present all ten plays in Pulitzer Prize winner Wilson’s “Pittsburgh Cycle,” PPTCO offers its sixth play in the series—a brilliantly constructed examination of the African-American male's fight for his own humanity in the face of personal and societal ills. Last season's production of August Wilson's Two Trains Running at PPTCO was ranked #3 in Post-Gazette theater critic Christopher Rawson's “Best Theatre Evenings of 2008”.

HiTEC
January 9, 2009
8:00 pm

HiTEC (Histrionic Thought Experiment Cooperative) is an independent experimental orchestra founded in July of 2008 as an attempt to create a Low Classical alternative to those who worship at the temple of the fictitious and propagandistic "Golden Age" that's often used to justify the "Divine Rights" of cash-flow.

Unlike most (M)USICAL projects, the playing of this group revolves around THINKING about particular things while playing in a very open-ended way RATHER THAN necessarily playing specified physical actions.
HiTEC, Histrionic Thought Experiment Cooperative is an independent orchestra of 22 people founded by tENTATIVELY, a cONVENIENCE. It turns classic Thought Experiments such as the "Infinite Monkey Theorem" into sound waves before the very eyes & ears of its (v)audience.

Vieux Farka Toure debuts in Pittsburgh with a special,
one-night-only performance of next-generation Mali blues

A presentation of CD Live! and The Andy Warhol Museum

Monday, October 13, 2008 at 8:00 p.m.
New Hazlett Theater

PITTSBURGH – Guitarist, singer, songwriter and percussionist Vieux Farka Toure’s first performance in Pittsburgh represents an historic passing of the torch from father to son. He skillfully crafts his music and songs in the rich Sonrai tradition of his father, the late guitarist Ali Farka Toure, whose famed “desert blues” beguiled a generation of music lovers and fueled the Afropop/world music wave.

With a global style all his own, Vieux ushers in the next generation of Mali blues by bringing together ancient African melodies with reggae and rock on equal footing. His music blends the blues sound of northern Mali with the elegant melodies of Mande and other Malian ethnic styles. Vieux Farka Toure’s guitar and vocals truly create a spectacular mix of styles and sound.

In 2005, Vieux collaborated with Eric Herman, a North American musician and producer, to record his debut album which hit U.S. shelves in early 2007. The album contains two tracks in which Vieux collaborated with his father shortly before his father’s death in 2006. Among other instruments, the Guinea flute, traditional spike fiddle, and talking drum provide global music audiences with a taste of Mali’s rich and distinct musical heritage. Striking a balance between tradition and innovation, this debut is full of tributes to his father, elders in his community, and the people of Mali.

Vieux undertook a special project in 2007 to help spread awareness about his country’s malaria epidemic, the number one killer of children in Africa. Vieux’s “Fight Malaria Tour,” which benefited a UNICEF-affiliated Fight Malaria campaign in Mali, was touted as one of the most exciting global tours in world music, with over 30 dates in seven countries including France, England, Italy, Germany, Spain, Mali and the United States.

Ticket information: General admission tickets for this performance at the New Hazlett Theater are $20 and may be purchased at the Box Office at Theater Square (655 Penn Avenue), online at www.pgharts.org , or by calling 412-456-6666. To purchase 10 or more tickets at special discounted rates, please call (412) 471-6930.

CD Live! broadens the creative expression of the Pittsburgh music scene while advancing the artistry of musicians from around the world. This collaboration of The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, WYEP fm and Three Rivers Arts Festival aims to build new music audiences and to welcome these listeners to Pittsburgh’s downtown Cultural District.

Pittsburgh Theater Theatre Directory Updated

Updated here: http://www.pghgalleries.com/PittsburghTheaters.htm

The New Olde Bank Theatre 722 Allegheny River Boulevard Verona, PA 15147 412.251.7904
http://www.newobt.com/

This is not a new theatre, just one I didn't have in the directory ( any help is welcome updating the listings!
....

The Olde Bank Theatre was established in the fall of 1999. Originally housed in a former bank building located in the Natrona section of Harrison Township, The Olde Bank Theatre produced over thirty shows. Its mission was to provide a creative outlet for intelligent and thought-provoking live theatrical pieces, both established works of yesterday and new works of today. To that end, The OBT—as it was known—embraced a hodgepodge of genres: everything from comedy to drama, Shakespeare to Chekhov, musical revues to holiday favorites, and new works to children’s theatre. The company’s founding Artistic Directors, Sean Michael O’Donnell and Todd Collar, closed the theatre’s doors in October 2003. After a five-year hiatus, The OBT has been resurrected, and while its location and name may have changed, its fundamental mission remains the same.

For this hour-long multimedia presentation, Teresa Foley, the Pittsburgh Creativity Project Director, will be joined by individual artists, arts venue-operators, and a member of an anonymous artist collective. Roger Humphries Jazz Downtown Pittsburgh Free! Tuesday April 22 2008 5pm Backstage Bar, Theater Square

A living Jazz legend from Pittsburgh, Roger Humphries, playing for free in downtown Pittsburgh? Leave it to the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust and sponsors BNY Mellon and MCAI (Multicultural Arts Initiative) to pull that feat off. Tuesday, April 22, 2008 at 5pm Legendary Jazz percussionist Roger Humphries will play the Backstage Bar at Theater Square in the Cultural District of downtown Pittsburgh, PA. More event info can be found here . Roger will also be playing a free show in Bridgeville on May 18, info here. I mentioned Roger in my blog series "Daydreaming about Pittsburgh Art" here.

About Roger Humphries:

Roger is rated by music critics as one of the most exciting percussionists in the business. He has provided the rhythmic beat for such greats as Ray Charles, Horace Silver, Richard "Groove" Holmes, Stanley Turrentine, James Moody, and the list of great musicians goes on and on and on.
With various groups, Roger Humphries has performed at Carnegie Music Hall, the Village Gate and the Apollo Theatre in New York. He has also played at the Bohemian Caverns and Shelly Manne's Manhole in Los Angeles; the Penthouse in Seattle, Wash.; Pep's Lounge and Showboat, Philadelphia; the Jazz Workshop, Boston; Ronny Scott's in London, and many other places.

One of the most fascinating aspects of Roger's life is the number of extremely talented musicians he has had the opportunity to perform with. He has played with such well known jazz artists as: Lee Morgan, Grant Green, Billy Taylor, Bill Doggett, Benny Green, Richard "Groove" Holmes, Lionel Hampton, Coleman Hawkins, Clark Terry, J.J. Johnson, Billy Preston, Joe Henderson, Freddie Hubbard, Dizzy Gillespie, Jack McDuff, Gene Harris, George Harris, George Benson, John Faddis, Slide Hampton, Johnny Griffin, Herbie Mann, Randy Brecker, Joe Williams, Milt Jackson and Jimmy Witherspoon. In Pittsburgh, Roger has performed with Nathan Davis, Frank Cunimondo, Pete Henderson, Dwayne Dolphin, and all the other local greats too numerous to mention.
