Seeing Jazz: A Tribute to the Masters and Pittsburgh Jazz Legends

Reception: Thursday, February 5 from 6–9 p.m. including a special performance by the MCG Jazz Class of 2008 Legends and a book signing by "Pittsburgh Jazz" author John Brewer

Manchester Craftsmen's Guild (MCG) is collaborating with artist and curator Gwendolyn Black to present Seeing Jazz: a Tribute to the Masters and Pittsburgh Jazz Legends. The exhibition will showcase works by well-known masters along with some of today's noted contemporary artists, all of whom have inspired many through their artworks dedicated to jazz. Master artists include Romare Bearden, Faith Ringgold, Allen Stringfellow, Benny Andrews, Fred Brown, Richard Mayhew, Chuck Stewart and Edmund Yaghjian.Nearly ten years ago Gwendolyn Black created and introduced Visual Expressions on Jazz, which has been a recognized event for the past several years at the Annual JVC Jazz Festival in New York. To highlight Pittsburgh’s historic contributions to jazz, the exhibition will fittingly kick off a planned national tour starting at MCG in Pittsburgh’s North Side. Black’s motivation for organizing the exhibition is to “give more visibility to visual artists who not only listen to jazz music while working but who have also been at the forefront of documenting and supporting jazz music through their art.” When Seeing Jazz: a Tribute to the Masters arrives at Manchester Craftsmen’s Guild in January, the exhibition will coincide with the conclusion of the City’s 250th anniversary and will include a special focus on legends from the steel city including a slide show of Teenie Harris photographs from the Pittsburgh Courier archive.

*Please Excuse Us. Factors beyond our control have delayed the full installation of this exhibition a week from the originally scheduled opening date. We hope you’ll come back to see the show in its entirety after January 25, 2009 and join us for the reception that is free and open to the public.

Manchester Craftsmen's Guild is housed along with its sister organization, Bidwell Training Center, in a 62,000 square foot facility located at 1815 Metropolitan Street on Pittsburgh's North Shore. Hours of operation are 8 a.m.-5:30 p.m., Monday-Friday. Designed by architect Tasso Katsalas, a pupil of Frank Lloyd Wright, Manchester Craftsmen's Guild houses visual arts and recording studios, classrooms, galleries, a cafeteria, concert hall and conference rooms designed to showcase the roles of creativity and craftsmanship in learning. Natural light pouring in through windows and skylights, terracotta-toned masonry framing archways and circular portals evoke stylistic influences of indigenous African architecture. The building's sense of warmth permeates the organizations' work with the arts and career education. Handmade objects, furniture, photographs and paintings that adorn public and private spaces create a model environment for education, exhibitions, performances and social and professional gatherings.

Altered Meanings: Featuring works by Cat Chow & Jesse McLean
Receptions: Wednesday, October 29 at 7:00 p.m.—Artist Talk with Jesse McLean and Thursday, November 13 at 6:00 p.m.—Lecture and performance by Cat Chow From recycled and reclaimed materials to familiar images, Altered Meanings explores the unique art-making processes of Cat Chow and Jesse McLean. Two, young contemporary artists, Chow and McLean both collect and repurpose to produce compelling and innovative works of art. Download the exhibition announcement!

Jesse McLean creates images by deconstructing scenes from news media and pop-culture. Replacing original content with remnants of obvious manipulation—such as the cursor or Photoshop Magic Wand selector—she questions their cause and meaning while challenging viewers’ understanding of their relationship to these popular photographs.

Cat Chow is well known for her transformation of everyday objects into wearable art. Her earlier works are fabricated from materials like dollar bills, zippers, and keys. While her new works forge the frontier of sculptural and installation art, her technique remains the same: presenting common materials in a new context that provokes reflection about social and identity issues. Read the press release!

Also as part of her work with MCG, Chow hopes to develop an ongoing project--"Keeper"--which she began in 2006. She says that she, "find[s] keys to be particularly interesting. When one no longer knows what a key unlocks, one still has a hard time parting with it. Through this project, I hope to repurpose those unwanted keys to a better end." In support of Chow's efforts to create a "constellation" of keys for a show she is planning at the Nevada Museum of Art, MCG has placed key collection boxes at both its North Shore and downtown galleries. All are encouraged to stop by and donate their unwanted keys to this new cosmic creation. Cat Chow's work at Manchester Craftsmen's Guild is underwritten with support from the Citizens Bank Foundation.

Jesse McLean received her BA from Oberlin College. She worked at Pittsburgh Filmmakers before returning to pursue her MFA in Moving Image at the University of Illinois at Chicago. McLean’s work has been showcased in Chile, Berlin and New York. She is the recipient of PA Council on the Arts and Larson Fellowships.
Artist Talk: WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 29, 7 P.M.

Cat Chow received her BS from Northwestern, where she first began creating garments from repurposed materials. She has led numerous youth focused projects, has taught at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and exhibited her work worldwide. She is currently a resident at New York’s Artists Alliance and adjunct professor at Savannah School of Art and Design.
Exhibition Reception including artist talk and performance by Cat Chow: THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 13, 6–9 P.M.

Manchester Craftsmen's Guild Art Event MCG at 800 Penn Ave July 11,2008

LOCAL SCULPTORS STIR UP TRASH SOUP
AT MCG@800 PENN AVENUE GALLERY IN THE CULTURAL DISTRICT

Pittsburgh, PA, July 7, 2008—Manchester Craftsmen’s Guild (MCG) Youth & Arts is excited to announce its first collaboration with Pittsburgh Society of Sculptors, which includes a special site-specific installation at MCG’s satellite gallery—MCG@800 Penn Avenue—in the Cultural District. Selected from proposals submitted through an open call for entries, partners Ed and Carley Parrish transform this highly visible yet intimately scaled space to convey notions of consumption, adaptation, mutation and the causal relationships between earth’s inhabitants.

Visit MCG@800 Penn Avenue on Friday, July 11 from 6–9 p.m. during the Cultural District Gallery Crawl and step into a cross section of the North Pacific gyre!

FREE and open to the public, the Gallery Crawl is a quarterly showcase of art and entertainment that takes place at various galleries and spaces throughout the Cultural District. You may start crawling at any location, but be sure to stop by 800 Penn Avenue for a surreal underwater experience—plus food and refreshments will be served!

Located in the Pacific Ocean, midway between Hawaii and San Francisco, and widely considered one of the world’s largest trash dumps, the North Pacific Gyre is estimated to be at least the size of Texas. Through a multimedia, sound and light installation made of various recycled and found materials, Ed and Carley Parrish recreate what is more popularly known as the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. Stop back at the gallery nearer to the close date and witness changes in this “living” exhibition.

Space and Place:SOS@800 Penn Avenue will remain on view through September 7, 2008. The gallery is located at 800 Penn Avenue in Pittsburgh’s Cultural District and is open free to the public Mondays – Fridays, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

This site-specific installation is an extension of Space and Place:SOS@MCG, a local rendition of the Society of Sculptors’ annual open exhibition. The sculptural showcase features more than 20 regional artists whose work is displayed within and outside MCG’s North Shore facility at 1815 Metropolitan Street.

The Gallery Crawl in the Cultural District is presented by The Pittsburgh Cultural Trust Department of Education and Community Engagement. For a complete schedule of events visit www.pgharts.org/education/gallerycrawl.aspx.

From Violence to Vision. MCG Youth and Arts Presentation

LOCAL TEENS USE ART TO SUPPORT VICTIMS OF VIOLENCE Pittsburgh, PA—

Manchester Craftsmen’s Guild (MCG) Youth & Arts is thrilled to present a project by our first group of Arts Leadership and Public Service (ALPS) interns: From Violence to Vision. On view through July 6 at MCG’s satellite gallery—MCG@800 Penn Avenue—the exhibition includes works across media, created by ALPS interns, as well as a silent auction of exhibition pieces and sale of student-designed advocacy pins.

Join us for a free, public benefit reception on Friday, June 20, 5:30-8 p.m. at the Penn Avenue gallery. The event will offer an opportunity to meet students featured in the show as well as kick-off the silent auction, which will runthrough the end of the exhibition. Advocacy pins will also be available for purchase and food and refreshments will be served!A portion of all proceeds made during the exhibition will go to the Center for Victims of Violence and Crime (CVVC).

One of eight ALPS interns with work in the exhibition, Adriane Hairston, a rising senior at CAPA high school, is excited to participate in activism through art for her first time: “As a group, we [ALPS interns] decided to addressviolence through this exhibition because it is an issue that has affected all of us, despite our various backgrounds andexperiences. I decided to include my painting, Fruit Nancy, because I felt it was a strong piece with a chance to raisemoney for a good cause. I really hope that our efforts will positively impact someone’s life and set the stage for me tocontribute to similar benefits in the future.”

Over the course of the past academic year, the ALPS interns have shown remarkable commitment to their responsibilities. MCG is proud to see From Violence to Vision come together as the result of their plans to confront a social issuethrough a charitable initiative.

Supported by a grant from the New York-based Surdna Foundation, the ALPS internship is part of MCG’s Apprenticeship Training Program after-school arts courses. This stipended experience requires that students maintain a “C” average inschool and contribute 8 hours a week to MCG while engaging in learning skills for future success like peer leadership, portfolio development and community activism.

Widely considered Allegheny County’s most comprehensive organization committed to helping victims of and preventingviolent crime, CVVC is a not-for-profit specializing in advocacy, crisis intervention, counseling and community education.

To purchase advocacy pins, please contact Heather Powell (hpowell@mcg-btc.org) at 412-322-1773 Ext. 196 orJeffrey Schwarz ( jschwarz@mcg-btc.org) at Ext. 198.
