MCG@800 Penn Avenue—For nine days during the month of July MCG Youth's summer students learned from Pittsburgh's Hot Metal Happening (HMH) the process of creating cast iron forms--beginning with a concept then modeled wax to molten metal and eventually hardened iron. View the results of the students' hard work during this exhibition showcasing their cast iron works of art as well as documentation of the process

Altered Meanings: Featuring works by Cat Chow & Jesse McLean
Receptions: Wednesday, October 29 at 7:00 p.m.—Artist Talk with Jesse McLean & Thursday, November 13 at 6:00 p.m.—Lecture and performance by Cat Chow

From recycled and reclaimed materials to familiar images, Altered Meanings explores the unique art-making processes of Cat Chow and Jesse McLean. Two, young contemporary artists, Chow and McLean both collect and repurpose to produce compelling and innovative works of art.
Jesse McLean creates images by deconstructing scenes from news media and pop-culture. Replacing original content with remnants of obvious manipulation—such as the cursor or Photoshop Magic Wand selector—she questions their cause and meaning while challenging viewers’ understanding of their relationship to these popular photographs.

Cat Chow is well known for her transformation of everyday objects into wearable art. Her earlier works are fabricated from materials like dollar bills, zippers, and keys. While her new works forge the frontier of sculptural and installation art, her technique remains the same: presenting common materials in a new context that provokes reflection about social and identity issues.

Exhibit and Opening Reception: CMU Students Display Visions of a Community River Center

Students in the Carnegie Mellon School of Architecture invite you to view their design proposals for a Community River Center in Lawrenceville. Join them for an opening reception at 6:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 29 at borelli-edwards galleries.

The architecture students have put their creative energy in developing proposals that "re-connect" the community to the Allegheny River. 11 project proposals offer connections that strengthen the emerging community ties to the region’s natural and cultural systems. One Oxford Center yesterday unveiled a 250th birthday present to the city -- a 60-foot mural that celebrates neighborhoods.
The work of a graphics class at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, the mural covers the wall along an escalator on the Smithfield Street side of the building.

Ann Rosenthal's class of 14, with five lead designers, portrayed Downtown, Bloomfield, North Side, South Side and Oakland, each one represented on a 4-foot-by-8-foot panel.
