New RMU Media Arts Gallery Opens with "Brit by Brit"

Moon Township, Pa., March 12, 2008 - The Robert Morris University (RMU) Media Arts Gallery will present "Brit by Brit - Contemporary Ceramics by Rod Bugg and Stephen Dixon" from March 19 through April 19. The opening reception is set for Thursday, March 20, from 5:30 to 8 p.m.

"Brit by Brit" is the inaugural exhibition in the gallery's new location at the RMU building at 600 Fifth Ave. in downtown Pittsburgh. It is free and open to the public.

Rod Bugg is the former principal of the Wimbledon School of Art and was the chair of the United Kingdom Higher Education Funding Council. His recent work focuses primarily on sculpture in clay and related drawings, which also will be featured at the RMU exhibition.

Stephen Dixon currently is a professorial research fellow in contemporary crafts at Manchester Metropolitan University, investigating political narrative and the contemporary printed image in ceramics. His work at "Brit by Brit" is supported in part by the British Council.

"Brit by Brit" is a study in contrasts. Bugg's floor and wall-based modular ceramic sculptures reflect a minimalist aesthetic that is influenced by Italian landscapes, based on Bugg's frequent visits to that country. Dixon, on the other hand, uses traditional ceramic forms such as plates and pots to convey politically charged social commentary.

"The exhibition will highlight the new Media Arts Gallery, which was designed by Edge Studio, as one of the most exciting public spaces in downtown Pittsburgh and one of the best in the region for seeing art in all its forms," said Timothy Hadfield, head of the Department of Media Arts at RMU.

The exhibition coincides with the National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts 42nd Annual Conference, which takes places March 19-22 at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center in downtown Pittsburgh. The exhibition will have extended hours those days, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
From March 24 through April 19, the exhibition will be open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Tomas Schneider's Art at the Penn Ave Ellis Armory Pittsburgh

I was blown away by the work of Tomas Schneider which is at the Penn Ave Armory (aka Ellis Armory) and can be seen today and tomorrow at that location. Penn Ave Armory is located between Ellis School in Shadyside and the former Reizenstein Middle School (you can access it from Penn Ave). The work in particular which spoke to me is located here at his website http://schneiderworks.com/3Dwork.html but you really have to see it in it's 3 D form.

NCECA? It's the National Council on Education for Ceramic Arts. Pittsburgh Convention? It's their national convention happening from Wednesday March 19 through Saturday March 22, 2008. It means there's a lot of art to be seen during March of 2008 and beyond. Over 5,000 visitors will be in Pittsburgh to participate in the conference and many art groups, galleries, and artists are taking part by displaying art work.
The following art exhibit information was adapted from the NCECA schedule in order for anyone in the Pittsburgh area to find out what's happening during this exciting time for the NCECA and for Pittsburgh art. Conference members will most likely be on a tour bus on Wednesday, March 19, 2008 seeing these exhibits throughout the area.

· L’amour, La Mort, Brian Molanphy. At the National (Porcelain) Manufactory of Sèvres,
France, I made cups in shades and textures of white, especially with bone china. The white marble reliefs of the Parthenon, showing figures processing toward the temple, were influential. Grouped together, the cups make a procession, sometimes austere like the Greek figures, sometimes more humorous, decadent, and flabby. Curated by Jaclyn Kessler. Mar 19-22. Strip District Pittsburgh NCECA Art Related Events:

NCECA? It's the National Council on Education for Ceramic Arts. Pittsburgh Convention? It's their national convention happening from Wednesday March 19 through Saturday March 22, 2008. It means there's a lot of art to be seen during March of 2008 and beyond. Over 5,000 visitors will be in Pittsburgh to participate in the conference and many art groups, galleries, and artists are taking part by displaying art work.
The following art exhibit information was adapted from the NCECA schedule in order for anyone in the Pittsburgh area to find out what's happening during this exciting time for the NCECA and for Pittsburgh art. Conference members will most likely be on a tour bus on Wednesday, March 19, 2008 seeing these exhibits throughout the area.

NCECA Invitational Exhibition will highlight the work of 22-25 ceramic artists who express themselves in a narrative form through the creation of vessels, sculpture and installation artwork. Stories evolving from mythology, personal relationships, political commentary in the intimate and social realm, gender, identity and family will all be featured. A color catalogue will be produced to document the exhibition and will include introductory essays by Ronald Kuchta and Matthias Ostermann, photo documentation, and biographical information on each of the participating artists. In conjunction with the exhibition, educational programs and weekend activities will be planned to advance the public's understanding and appreciation of the exhibition. · Raku Dreams, John Dorinsky. The works in this exhibition are part of an ongoing series devoted to the expression of dream imagery using the Raku ceramic firing process. Raku firing is like trying to capture a dream. The artist must gaze vigilantly through on rushing billows of smoke. He awaits the decisive moment to yank the ware from the blackening shadows. Upon awakening, the dreamer scurries to seize fugitive images with paper and pen before they dart from conscious memory. Dreams and Raku plunge their practitioners into a universe that is accidental, chaotic, unknown and momentary. They emerge from their trials, however, richly rewarded by the surprise and delight of unforeseen revelations. The designs are conceived as a planned series of resists to the one undeniable reality of Raku: the reduction fire. This occurs when the ware is taken from the kiln glowing hot and placed in a chamber where it catches fire and is promptly smothered. The trapped smoke from the fire will permeate the unglazed surface of the clay with black carbon. The glazed areas of the design resist the carbon completely. They will shine iridescently against the matte black of the areas that have absorbed carbon. In a process that Dorinsky calls “sand pattern resist,” the plate is placed face down in the sand and set on fire from the back. Wherever the sand touches the plate, it blocks the carbon. This creates a contrapuntal pattern of black and white that accompanies the glazed areas with surprisingly beautiful results. Working or cooperating with the elemental forces: fire, earth, air and water is one of the great attractions of Raku. For Dorinsky, Raku is a spiritual process. It is a means of putting mental images from the unconscious into play with the elements. “As the artist, I become the intermediary of these conflicting and disparate forces. I direct the process. In my work, I orchestrate fire, earth, air and dreams.” Mar 17-22. · Decalcomania, Recent Ceramic Work by Laura Jean McLaughlin. Decalcomania (with no pre-conceived notion) was a game that the surrealist artists played in which they would spread gouache, ink or oil paint onto a non-absorbant surface and then press it onto a canvas or paper and then pull out imagery much like the Rohrschach used by psychologists. The Clay Penn was purchased by Laura Jean in 2002 and was formerly a paint your own pottery business that left behind hundreds of slip cast kitschy molds from the 60’s-80’s. The solo exhibition of Laura Jean McLaughlin’s current work includes hand-built figurative sculptures as well as funky slip cast sculptures and teapots that are constructed from parts of these molds using the technique of relying on her subconsious to construct and embellish the forms she creates . The Clay Penn houses Laura Jean McLaughlin’s studio and collection which also includes an eclectic mix of work by artists such as Matt Nolen, Yih-Wen Kuo, Peter Gourfain, Ron Meyers, Matt West, George Bowes, August Rolin, Jenny Lind and Louise Radochonski.
