City of Pittsburgh Bureau of Building Inspection Threatens Lawsuit to Remove Lawrenceville Urban Garden Fence

So what happens when someone tries to construct an urban garden using existing pallets for the fence which would be otherwise be heading to a dump or a fire? Well, if enough people complain to the Bureau of Building Inspection it will get shut down with the threat of a lawsuit from the City of Pittsburgh.  

This happened specifically in Lawrenceville at the corner of 52nd St and Holmes across from the 52nd Street Market.  It appears that the Bureau of Building Inspection received "enough" resident complaints that the inspector cited "aesthetic" reasons and no other code violation along with a possible lawsuit if the pallets were not removed. My call is that "they" didn't want to deal with the complaints any more.

One of the complaints was a resident who called in and complained about a strong manure smell but none was ever used. It turned out to be a neighbor who let their garbage go rancid.

People are encouraged to complain via 311. 

Note: The owner of the lot was not involved in the construction of the pallet garden. The above photo was taken in the middle of deconstruction and as of now the lot has been cleared.

New York Artist turns to Pittsburgh in time of Recession


Emerging New York Artist Isabelle Garbani has turned to Pittsburgh during the recession. While the rest of the country is struggling, post-industrial Pittsburgh is faring better: with lower unemployment, stable housing prices and a diversified industry, making it possible for artists to find an audience willing to collect art.

"Unemployment is 5.5 percent, far below the national average. While housing prices sank nearly everywhere in the last year, they rose here. Wages are also up. Foreclosures are comparatively uncommon," according to a January 7, 2009 New York Times article,.

"New York City has been hit really hard by the crisis, and a lot of collectors are hesitating right now. As an emerging Artist, I must go where the economy can sustain art and culture" says Ms. Garbani, who has started showing at BoxHeart Gallery in Pittsburgh, and is preparing for a solo show there in 2011.

Isabelle Garbani is a Brooklyn based artist who received her MFA from the New York Academy of Art in 2004. She has exhibited her work throughout the New York metropolitan area and the Northeast. Her work focuses on contemporary issues and culture and can be seen at www.IsabelleGarbani.com

Future Tenant and guest curator Lauri Mancuso (BFA ‘91) are pleased to present Sworn In, a group art exhibition opening January 16, 2009.

OPENING RECEPTION: JANUARY 16, 2009, 6-11PM W/ Local musicians, DJs and filmmakers

Sworn In is an exhibition themed for and coinciding with the 2009 U.S. Presidential Inauguration. This historically significant election will be represented by the work of visual and sound artists from across the country. Modeled after the art collection of the White House, the salon style installation will mimic the collected works. Mancuso will renovate the arts venue using a variety of materials to resemble a parlor in the White House and flank the walls with the work of ten visual artists from around the country.

Sworn In will run for one month and include a closing reception February 14, 2009 from 7:00 PM – 11:00 PM. All events are free and all ages are welcome. Gallery hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 12:30 PM – 6:00 PM.

They also look forward to the break when they can have a cup of coffee, a glass of juice, some refreshments, and socialize with the other people present that day. I'm hoping to keep up the volunteer effort here and could use some help. Passing the word on to anyone in the Pittsburgh region who has even a remote interest in visual art and asking them to bookmark or subscribe the blog would be a huge help. There are a ton of art events going on in the area and the blog is an attempt to get the word out on "quality" art events.

Most of the traffic to this blog is a result of search engine tagging (accounts for 8,000 of the 10,000 monthly hits right now) and in order for me to take this to the next level I'm looking for return visits. Also I need your input on whether to continue the Pittsburgh art articles summary for the month, eg November is here, as well as the monthly art event guide, November 2008 is here.

TO THE NEW HAZLETT THEATER BECAUSE OF RAIN

Don't miss this year's annual JAZZ/POETRY CONCERT presented by City of Asylum/Pittsburgh. The FREE event will take place on Sampsonia Way and include musical sets by the Oliver Lake Jazz Quintet and the Flux Quartet. The two groups will also join together—along with 9 poets from all around the world—to perform the world premiere of a new jazz work by Oliver Lake called "What is Home?"

ONE BIG CHANGE THIS YEAR: In the event of rain, the concert will move indoors to the New Hazlett Theater. For more information, visit http://www.cityofasylumpittsburgh.org/.

Pittsburgh Art Exhibits Events Info

Many people in the art scene focus on opening receptions in terms of prioritizing when to go to art venues but if you really want to see and take in the art at a venue your best bet is to do so when there isn't a reception. Of course when it comes to Unblurred I would make the exception given the number of venues you can see at once, most of which do not have regular hours. You can still set up appointments to see those though.

So keep in mind and check out Pittsburgh City Paper's online events listing which has a mainstream list of ongoing art exhibits here.

Pittsburgh Citywide Art Salon 250 Artist Celebration

We are extremely excited to be bringing you all THE CITYWIDE SALON, our Pittsburgh 250 Community Connections public art project. The show will be up during June all throughout Pittsburgh, with the work of 18 local artists as well as Academy instructors reproduced in bus shelters around the city.

The Sprout Fund has a great write up on it.

The 2008 Citywide Salon selected artists include Lucia Aguirre, Leslie Ansley, Stephanie Armbruster, Kristin Becks, Cory Bonnet, Thommy Conroy, Daviea Davis, Monique Luck, James Maszle, Tom Mosser, MOZE, Bill Pfahl, Robert Schmalzried, Christopher Schmidt, Ann Schneider, David Seman, Ali Spagnola, and Gerry Tonti.
