Pittsburgh and Braddock Murals: I especially like when they do the more in-depth looks at the murals which tend to justify more information, just click on the more info icon once you have selected a mural. Great project!
Now all we need is a more balanced and varied approach to the types of mural/public art in the region in terms of language, subject matter and mediums.

New Public Art Murals Thanks to the Sprout Fund, Pittsburgh PA 2010
The Sprout Fund murals which have recently been finished (most of them) are among some of my favorites so far. Regardless, the work they do is crucial to a town where new public art has become harder to come by as far as what happens through the City of Pittsburgh.
With more than $3.5 million invested in nearly 400 civic and community initiatives since 2001, Sprout continues to support innovative ideas and grassroots community projects that are catalyzing change in Pittsburgh.
Donation info can be found here.
Info from Sprout Fund on the murals (Curt Gettman's words):
East Liberty (5877 Commerce Street) – Artist: Brian Brown (will be completed spring 2011) – Title: TBD
Artist held a photo day where over 75 community members came out to have their portrait taken. Brian will be working around 40 portraits from that session into the finished mural.

Oakdale (5023 Noblestown Road) – Artist: Diane Adams - Title: America’s Home Town
Diane has previously painted murals for Sprout’s regional Community Connections initiative.

Trafford (425 Cavitt Avenue) – Artist: Berry Breene – Title: Windows to our future, portals from the past
Mural greets viewers as they enter town on the Tri-Borough Expressway. Has changed the feel of the borough’s primary gateway immensely.

Uptown (2106 Forbes Avenue – Artist: Gabe Felice – Title: Open Heaven Open Sky
Community gave Gabe free reign to paint pretty much whatever he wanted. The resulting multi-layered, organic design is some of Gabe’s best work yet.

Strip District (1907 Penn Avenue) – Artists: Carley Parrish and Shannon Pultz – Title: The Strip Mural
This extremely large mural inspired by collage artist Romare Bearden (and the hustle bustle of daily life in the Strip) is just about finished. Artists are attaching metal birds as sculptural elements to complete the work. Should be completely done by this weekend.

Wilkinsburg (745 Penn Avenue – Artists: Jesse Best and Brian Holderman – Title: 10,000
Another big one. Brian previously painted a portion of this same wall in 2003 (the first year of the program). He returned in 2010 with his friend Jesse Best and created a more sophisticated design that uses the entire wall.

Sprout Public Art improves the image of the region and enhances the visual landscape of neighborhoods in Pittsburgh and the surrounding communities of Allegheny County by creating high quality public art. The program encourages dialogue on public art between the community and the artist, contributes to community and neighborhood development, and raises awareness about the important role that local artists can have in shaping communities.
Over eight seasons of Sprout Public Art and local communities have collaborated with artists to develop 56 enduring works of public art that enhance the urban landscape and consider the people of the community, their history and their hopes for the future.
Recent support for Sprout Public Art was generously provided in part by The Laurel Foundation, The PNC Foundation, The Allegheny Regional Asset District and other generous donors.

Walking Pittsburgh

The Trib has a lot of good info as far as walking Pittsburgh here. Walking Pittsburgh can be an experience full of art when you consider the architecture, statues, murals and the like. The article doesn't cover that but it points to unique places like Specter Studios in Sharpsburg which flies under the radar for most.
I've been randomly walking Pittsburgh for the last year and have enjoyed many of the lesser seen, smaller elements of Pgh. The past few days it's been the North Side. Ever seen Randyland? A must see for sure. A building which you can see from Mt Washington it's so bright. The address is 208 Jacksonia where Arch Street intersects, where Moxie Dada is located. Zip Code 15212.

Pittsburgh Murals and Public Art Info Mural Artists from the Pittsburgh Galleries Blog
Lately a reoccurring theme has been the difficulty in finding information online about Pittsburgh art in general. Either there is no information or incomplete or I'm running into my own posts from the Pittsburgh Art Blog. In the case of Pittsburgh murals I was able to find information it's just that it took a while as it was spread out!
I was able to find an older list from the Carnegie Library here which I list towards the bottom of this post. Many of their research projects cover from 1930 to 2000 which is really cool. The main page for their research is www.clpgh.org/research . They cover a ton of ground.
Also the Pittsburgh Office of Public Art has tours and you can download free brochures here which cover the Cultural District, Retail District / Firstside, The North Shore, Grant Street Corridor District, and Oakland. You can also order them to be shipped for a fee, info at the link above.
As for many of the Pittsburgh murals which have been created from 2003-2006 The Sprout Fund, both being an amazing force and source of funding for many of them, also has a map and lists them by year. They are in the middle of revamping their website but you can go here to their old site for a larger pdf which you can print or just check out the image I've inserted below which you can click on for a better look. They also list them by year with summaries and photos here . Not all murals are documented there so if you know of others please let me know. For instance the "Welcome to Deutschtown" mural, designed and created by Pittsburgh-based artist David Lee Edwards, did not receive a lot of press, either in paper or online. More info here . If you're an artist looking for mural opportunities GPAC (Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council) has a link here .
Update: 2010 Sprout funded murals are here. The Sprout Fund is in the process of updating their new website as of October 2011 so hopefully it won't be long until you can find all the mural info in one section.
2013 Update: New PghMurals.com website.
Any other good info you have about public art let me know!
Thanks, Rick Byerly

North Side Mural titled "Welcome to Deutschtown." by Pittsburgh Artist David Edwards
A great Pittsburgh mural finished in 2007 in which I didn't know the story on so I wanted to post the information I found when coming across information from the artist David Edwards and other sources:
Info gathered from a Pittsburgh Dish blog here , from Pittsblog here and David Edward's press release in full from one of his myspace blogs here . Considering those were the only results I could find in the first few pages of Google I'd say it was less than covered, if at all, in the mainstream media. David's website is http://www.davidedwardsart.com/ .
The Pittsburgh Dish blog , which also has photos, states: The mural, part of the North Shore Glass Mural Project in conjuction with the Children’s Museum, is located on the corner of East Ohio and Cedar in Deutschtown on the North Side. The North Side Leadership Conference coordinated the funding along with the Elm Street Community, URA and others.
And the press release from David Edwards myspace :
Northside Mural public art information.
Below is a press release that answers questions often asked about the mural that I created last year. Better late than never.
There will be a dedication ceremony for the new "Welcome to Deutschtown" mural designed and created by Pittsburgh-based artist David Lee Edwards on Wednesday, June 20, 2007, in the Allegheny Park adjacent to the mural.
This mural is painted onto the exterior brick surface of the Park House located at the intersection of Cedar Avenue and East Ohio Street. The mural project was coordinated by the Northside Leadership Conference and sponsored by the Urban Redevelopment Authority of Pittsburgh, the Pittsburgh Partnership for Neighborhood Development, the Elm Street Community, and the East Allegheny Community Conference.
The mural is designed as a visually compelling artwork to serve as a celebratory gateway for the Historic Deutschtown neighborhood. This design honors the architecture and historic identity of the Northside community while paying tribute to the communities' significant contributions to cultural life. As "Pittsburgh Celebrates Glass" in 2007 the mural fittingly exalts the artistry and craftsmanship of Pittsburgh's architectural glassworks.
The immediate intent of the mural is to capture the public attention and hold it, first by the awe of an encounter with a brilliantly backlit stained glass window, then generating curiosity in the details of the design. Recalling the wonder of seeing a stained glass window in sunlight for the first time is key to the vicarious success of the project. To this end the viewer is engaged by a painting of a towering clerestory facade tempered by a calming and familiar church-like theme.
Nine crests featured within the windows are a proud reminder of the towns of origin for the early inhabitants of Historic Deutschtown. The mural memorializes cherished old world values such as hometown pride, orderliness, spirituality and attention to detail. The symmetry of the work respects the historic cultural affinity for managing complexity with coherence and order. A balance is then struck between the geometric order of the piece and it's relevance to the past. A silhouette of a musician playing a piano by candlelight adds a whimsical touch and draws the viewer's attention through the glass into the interior of the building itself. The piano playing maestro, dressed in period clothing, pays homage to the ongoing importance of music and entertainment in the cultural life of the neighborhood.
"My public art projects grow from a responsibility to the audience. This is the public in the art." D.L. Edwards
