Élan Fine Art Gallery will feature an exhibit of pastel and charcoal drawings on paper by the late regional artist, Michael J. Changnon from Nov. 7 to Dec. 30, 2008. Opening reception Nov. 7 from 6 – 9 pm.

“Shine: Drawings by Michael Changnon,” will display approximately 15 original pastel drawings produced from 1986 to 2000. It includes a seven and a half- foot drawing entitled “Tulips” which hung in the Andy Warhol Museum after Changnon’s passing as part of the Associated Artists of Pittsburgh Annual Show. Other drawings include “Cowboy,” Shine,” Three Suns,” “Dawn,” “Fire Truck,” “ Faces,” “Genesis” and more. Well known for his colorful and witty pastel drawings and integral titles, Changnon’s work continues to delight art audiences.

As far back as 1970, Ruth Drescher reviewed his show at the Undercroft Gallery and likened Changnon’s work to Joan Miro, saying “they have something very much in common: the capacity to give joy and mirth.”

“I would rank him as one of the major artists of this region,” said Harry Schwalb, former art critic for the Post-Gazette and contributing editor of ARTnews, “ his work is sophisticated, witty, compassionate, fully contemporary, and distinctively his. This is no mean feat: to have evolved a style that is uniquely one’s own. Michael Changnon has done this.”

Michael Changnon (1943-2002), was a founding member of the Slippery Rock University Art Department and was a faculty member there for 34 years, where he taught photography, painting and drawing. He received his Bachelor’s and Masters of Fine Arts degrees from Ohio University in Athens, Ohio.
He served on the Board of the Associated Artists of Pittsburgh and began exhibiting with the group in 1970.

Changnon’s exhibits in the Pittsburgh area included one-man shows at the Westmoreland Museum of Art, The Pittsburgh Center for the Arts, The Undercroft Gallery, Zenith Gallery, Metropol, St. Vincent’s College and Carson Street Gallery. Thirty-eight years ago, Changnon had a successful show at the Bird in Hand Gallery in Sewickley at the same Élan Gallery location.

Throughout his career, Changnon’s drawings were included in many national juried shows and have received numerous awards. His work was represented by Neo Persona Gallery in New York; the Christopher/ John Gallery in Santa Monica, California; ArtForms Gallery in Sarasota, Florida, as well as the Zenith and Carson Street Galleries in Pittsburgh. He exhibited and judged at the Three Rivers Art Festival and area group exhibitions, and taught and judged photography at the Pennsylvania Governor’s School for Fine Arts from 1994-1998.
