Vieux Farka Toure debuts in Pittsburgh with a special,
one-night-only performance of next-generation Mali blues

A presentation of CD Live! and The Andy Warhol Museum

Monday, October 13, 2008 at 8:00 p.m.
New Hazlett Theater

PITTSBURGH – Guitarist, singer, songwriter and percussionist Vieux Farka Toure’s first performance in Pittsburgh represents an historic passing of the torch from father to son. He skillfully crafts his music and songs in the rich Sonrai tradition of his father, the late guitarist Ali Farka Toure, whose famed “desert blues” beguiled a generation of music lovers and fueled the Afropop/world music wave.

With a global style all his own, Vieux ushers in the next generation of Mali blues by bringing together ancient African melodies with reggae and rock on equal footing. His music blends the blues sound of northern Mali with the elegant melodies of Mande and other Malian ethnic styles. Vieux Farka Toure’s guitar and vocals truly create a spectacular mix of styles and sound.

In 2005, Vieux collaborated with Eric Herman, a North American musician and producer, to record his debut album which hit U.S. shelves in early 2007. The album contains two tracks in which Vieux collaborated with his father shortly before his father’s death in 2006. Among other instruments, the Guinea flute, traditional spike fiddle, and talking drum provide global music audiences with a taste of Mali’s rich and distinct musical heritage. Striking a balance between tradition and innovation, this debut is full of tributes to his father, elders in his community, and the people of Mali.

Vieux undertook a special project in 2007 to help spread awareness about his country’s malaria epidemic, the number one killer of children in Africa. Vieux’s “Fight Malaria Tour,” which benefited a UNICEF-affiliated Fight Malaria campaign in Mali, was touted as one of the most exciting global tours in world music, with over 30 dates in seven countries including France, England, Italy, Germany, Spain, Mali and the United States.

Ticket information: General admission tickets for this performance at the New Hazlett Theater are $20 and may be purchased at the Box Office at Theater Square (655 Penn Avenue), online at www.pgharts.org , or by calling 412-456-6666.
