The Pittsburgh Art Blog

pittsburgh galleries is reborn anew as The Pittsburgh Art Blog. the blog features selected pittsburgh artists and upcoming exhibits with photos from the artists and galleries. since the major press outlets do not go beyond a directory listing of exhibits, blogs are needed to promote pittsburgh artists and their work. the blog also calls attention to the inferiority complex of pittsburgh art and how it's perpetuated by the major players in town. Started on August 20, 2007.pittsburgh area galleries and art venues are listed at the sister site www.PghGalleries.com.the blog and website are volunteer projects from fine art photographer and pittsburgh art advocate rick byerly, www.RickByerly.com.

Mixed Media Works on Paper

Box Heart's 2009
Artist of the Year:

ERIN TREACY

Artist Erin Treacy explores her interest in the chaos and repetition of memories colliding within her thought process through the accumulation of oil and acrylic paint, pattern, and the process of drawing on paper. As she delves into her past, Treacy enters into a vocabulary that borders on both the real and the imaginary. Through the scraping and building of the surface, Treacy leaves numerous layers of paint visible in one moment. These physical layers of paint echo the conceptual layers of memories she is retrieving.

November 11 – December 6, 2008 Seeking the Blue Bird of Happiness

Fresco, Epoxy, Cast Resin and Reverse Paintings by Iramly

Grand-daughter of the famous German Expressionist painter Hans Grohs, Irmaly’s style is inspired by her European background and experience through studies in the Paris American Art Academy, Danish Fold Art, as well as French and German Expressionism. She has worked with numerous renowned artists and developed her own unique style of art.

With hand framed paintings, worked in oil, acrylic, or reverse 3D effects, paint on layers of resin or in a resin casting from foam mold creating low relief, plexi frames with epoxy clay, or low relief glass, sealed in resin, come and discover why the adjective “creative” does not begin to describe Irmaly!

Scapegoats

Recent work by Sabe Lewellyn (Also featuring the abstract oil paintings of Dolores Diemer Yount)

Artist Sabe Lewellyn continues his exploration of the sacred with his first exhibition in Pittsburgh, “Scapegoats.” Using spheres or orbs, which are created by stamping with wine bottles around his painted animals, Lewellyn creates a symbolic hieroglyphic surface in his paintings. The goat, significant to numerous cultures, are used for sacrifice, symbolize life and creative energy, and carry interesting duplicity as lusty, rude false gods. The scapegoat, one made to bear the blame of others, is attributed to the Hebrew ceremony of Yom Kippur. The Scapegoat was chosen from two goats, one of which was for the Lord. The other, the sin-bearer, was sent into the wilderness for Azazel (the goat that escapes). In Christianity, the idea of the scapegoat is symbolic of Christ’s suffering and baring all the sins of the world. In Memphis, Maynard the Magnificent a plucky beer-drinking goat at Silky O'Sullivan's, even had to bare his burden as he bore bad luck for both the Memphis Grizzlies in 2002 and the Chicago Cubs in 2003!

Sacred Art Exhibition @ Boxheart Gallery, August 23, 2008

August 19 - September 13, 2008
The Sacred Art Exhibition
Public Reception: Saturday, August 23rd: 5 pm - 8 pm.Free and open to the public.
The art work exhibited in this year’s Sacred Art Exhibition celebrate the sacred process of creating art. They share the value that humanity has the power to choose sacred actions. Whether that action is the choice to create art that represents the depth of spirituality, or the choice to pay homage to the heroes and heroines of our past that led with sacred strength, or the choice to act through a collective good, “the choices we make everyday collect in pools and streams, just like water agreeing with gravity, to form our passage through life” (Randie Snow: Artist Statement). Through variations in textile, sculpture, drawing, painting, and assemblage, each artist successfully depicted the concept that “each act, each time we choose to lift a finger or not, choose left or right, flight or fight, each choice is sacred” (Ed King: Artist Statement).
Join us for the public reception of this year’s Sacred Art Exhibition: Saturday, August 23rd: 5 pm - 8 pm.

The Angel and the Last Child on Earth Sat July 26, 2008 Reception BoxHeart

BoxHeart Gallery in Bloomfield:

July 22 – August 16, 2008
The Angel and the Last Child on Earth
God is a little boy in the shadow of November cold silence...not a sound. An angel called innocence whispered your name as you tumbled to the ground.
Digital Paintings by Norwegian Artist: Reinhardt Sobye

Norwegian artist, Reinhardt Sobye, sees quietly and deeply into the void of discrimination, destruction, disguise and human’s presumption. A self-taught artist once painting in gouache and drawing in pastel, Sobye now processes his art work by manipulating his paintings, drawings, and photography with a computer. The result is art work that brilliantly reflects the devastation creeping into poetic landscapes by humanities disregard for the environment. With deep insight, Sobye captures extremely realistic portraits of the sick, the elderly, army deserters, and displaced people illuminating with compassion the alienation of people low on the social ladder. Children are unguarded and innocent, living in poverty that is a result of economic decisions made by government’s misuse of power. Sobye unclothes the reality of war and oppression in all its nakedness; in beautifully composed space. He beckons the viewer into the vast, false structure that holds up our civilization.

Bokse Art at Box Heart Gallery March 4 - March 29, 2008 Pittsburgh Art

Bokse Art at Box Heart Gallery March 4 - March 29, 2008

Paintings by Steve Boksenbaum. Recognizable imagery is merely a template for play with the media Boksenbaum uses. He gathers images photographically, which removes them one step from reality and into the timeless two dimensional realm. From there, Boksenbaum reconstructs them as broad geometric areas and works in layers of paint, each layer refining the areas and complementing the colors.

Also featuring ceramics by Michael Smithhammer. In carving the surface of the clay, Smithhammer is attempting to take responsibility for every atom of the form, reconfiguring the energy of the materials' surface. He then colors it in a way that appears completely natural, as if it was simply found that way. In a Buddhist sutra there is a line that states, "The body is the shadow of the soul." While savoring this concept, Smithhammer sensed a connection to what he imagines can happen for those who experience his work. A shadow is an image created by the blocking of light. It has no dimension. So when we truly see or experience what our soul really is, it will astound us with it's infinite beauty.
Public Reception: Saturday, March 8th 5 pm - 8 pmFree and open to the public.
More information on Steve Boksenbaum and Michael Smithhammer http://www.boxheart.org/

The National Council on Education for the Ceramic Arts (NCECA) is holding its 42nd annual conference in Pittsburgh this year. The conference, “CONFLUENCE: Innovation, Community, Environment” will be held at the David Lawrence Convention Center from March 19 - March 21.

In conjunction with this conference, Box Heart is featuring the ceramic work of Michael Smithhammer. The NCECA tour visits Box Heart on Wednesday, March 19th @ 9 am!

LANDSCAPES
Paintings by New York artist Tracy Helgeson
Public Reception: Saturday, November 17th: 6 pm - 9pm
Free and open to the public.

Tracy Helgeson's work is process driven. She loves the texture of the surfaces that she paints on, the color of the under painting, the softness of the brush, the smell of the paint, medium and solvent and the excitement of laying down each layer of color. Helgeson truly enjoys every step, from preparing the panel to applying the final glaze. In creating a painting, Helgeson's intent is to capture the mood of the landscape that she has a connection to. The spaces between and scenes that Helgeson chooses usually have a basis in reality, but she often alters composition, color and light to more accurately express her feelings about how and what she sees. Helgeson's landscapes are not representative in the traditional sense, but still capture the essence of space, form and light.
