The Pittsburgh Art Blog

The Pittsburgh Art Blog features selected pittsburgh artists and upcoming exhibits with photos from the artists and galleries. since the major press outlets do not go beyond a directory listing of exhibits, blogs are needed to promote pittsburgh artists and their work. the blog also calls attention to the inferiority complex of pittsburgh art and how it's perpetuated by the major players in town. Started on August 20, 2007.pittsburgh area galleries and art venues are listed at the sister site www.PghGalleries.com.

the blog and website are volunteer projects from fine art photographer and pittsburgh artist advocate rick byerly, www.RickByerly.com.

The Academy of the South Side new space free open model session

good news, academy of the south side has relocated:

Hi everyone,

We are thrilled to announce that we are having a free open model session this week and it will be the first event in our new studio! We have moved into the old St. Michael's school building on Pius Street in the South Side slopes. The school is owned by the Veronica's Veil Players, a non profit community theater group, and we're really excited to be sharing their beautiful space. The address is 44 Pius St., Pittsburgh, PA 15203, and directions are below (it's really simple).

The session will be tomorrow, Tuesday, September 22nd, from 7-10.

Directions to the new studio, from Carson Street on the South Side:
Turn up 18th St. (right off Carson if you're coming from Station Square, left off Carson if you're coming from the South Side Works)
Once you're going up the hill, make first right at the light, on Pius St.
Travel just under 1/3 of a mile, and the school will be on your left.

Make a sharp turn left up the driveway (there's a Howard Hanna real estate sign on the retaining wall of the driveway), and continue straight to the parking lot. After you park, just walk back toward the group of 3 old church school buildings - it is the middle building of the 3, and the entrance to our studio is on the ground level before the main entry staircase. We will have someone waiting on Pius to direct cars up the driveway, as well as at the Brew House in case anyone shows up to the old studio. See attached pictures for a map and image of the building.

We are really excited about this new studio and the step it represents for The Academy. We would like to sincerely thank you all for your patience and support. Thanks also to Geof from the SSLDC, Don from Carlson and McGinley Real Estate, and Denny and Dennis of Veronica's Veil Players for their tremendous assistance in helping us to get this new studio so quickly.

We hope to have you out on Tuesday to help us break in the new studio in anticipation of the Fall Term!

-Tim, Shervin, and Dan

Pittsburgh Brew House Artists Looking For Space

The Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council is working with our member organization, The Brew House Association (BHA), to create a resource list for the resident artists who are being displaced due to the City’s temporary shut-down of the Brew House’s facilities, pending the BHA’s upgrades to comply with building and fire codes.

Approximately 25 artists of various disciplines have been displaced from both living and studio spaces. We are writing to inquire about any rental spaces (either living or working) that your organization may have available, or may be aware of. We have created a very short webform to help compile this information for the artists. If you have space available, please visit here to enter the information. If you are aware of other organizations who may serve as resources for the relocation of these artists, please forward this message to them.

If you have any questions or suggestions regarding alternative venues, please contact Dek Ingraham, Development and Membership Coordinator at 412.391.2060, ext. 234, ringraham(AT)pittsburghartscouncil.org or Christiane Leach, Executive Assistant at 412.391.2060, ext. 228, cleach(AT)pittsburghartscouncil.org.

South Side Art Galleries, Stores, Venues and Events. Not just bars there. Pittsburgh, PA

So on Pittsburgh's South Side there are bar crawls instead of art gallery crawls. Ok, that's a given. And there used to be more traditional art galleries there over the last 10 years than now but art on the South Side is far from dwindling. Without getting into a laundry list of all the galleries and venues, you can get that here , I'll cover a few. Silver Eye Center for Photography is a nationally known fine art photography gallery and educational center with members from across the United States, many from the area as well. The Brew House ranges from artist workspaces to education, training, exhibit spaces and much more. The Academy of the South Side is located there, website here . You may find Dr Sketchy's Anti Art School holding sessions there, or at Gypsy Cafe. The I Made It Market! has events at the Brew House as well. Hart's and Packrat Handmade Art, distinct from each other in the types of art there, are two stores which feature local artwork for sale at good prices. Right now the work of well known artist Charles Smith II is at Breathe Yoga. I suggest taking a long walk on Carson Street and visiting all the venues listed here. You can print the list as well and use as a guide. Also the art events listed above can be found at the links here and here .

Venues mentioned above with their addresses and hours:

Hart's 1905 E. Carson Street Pittsburgh 15203 South Side (412) 431-0453 Art for sale. Open Wed-Sat

Silver Eye Center for Photography Gallery 1015 East Carson St Pittsburgh South Side 412-431-1810 http://www.silvereye.org/ New Gallery Hours Wednesday Noon- 6pm, Thursday Noon-8pm Friday Noon-6pm Saturday 11am - 5:00 p.m.

The Distillery Program

The Distillery Program at the Brew House Association is an exciting new program that acts as a stepping-stone for participants as they move towards new phases of artistic production and career development. This pilot program addresses the current need for relevant career/professional development opportunities related to the arts as well as exhibition opportunities, and support for working artists by providing individuals with a supportive and dynamic arena in which to pursue studio practice, career development, and an exhibition opportunity in the SPACE 101 gallery during the 2007-2008 season.

Over the course of the six-month program, participants will engage in a series of workshops and dialogues on topics relevant to career opportunities in the arts with Pittsburgh art professionals at the Brew House. Participants meet regularly for studio visits and peer critiques, discussions with guest curators, critics, and other working artists. The culmination of these sessions will be a group exhibition of newly produced work by the participants at Brew House Space 101 Gallery. More info here http://www.brew-house.org/programs.php .

The Uncanny Valley Rally is an exhibition of work from the Rossum’s Robotic Art Collective. Participating Rossum’s artists include Jennifer Gooch, Joey Hays, Ian Ingram, Greg Satul, Tiffany Sum, Rexy Tseng, Gregory Witt, Derk Wolmuth and Garth Zeglin. Also participating in the show is Doug Hill, a self taught artist who makes complex mechanical sculptures out of cardboard and the participants of the Robot 250 Brew House Open Studio taught by Tom Sarver and Ian Ingram.

Robot 250 is an educational, research and celebratory project being developed to coincide with Pittsburgh’s 250th anniversary celebration. Student workshops, open studios for local artists and the curious, giant public robotic sculptural installations, tours, and exhibitions will highlight our region’s leadership position in robotics education, research, invention, manufacture and art.

Space 101 activities are free and open to the public. Exhibitions are made possible by the Small Arts Initiative of the Heinz Endowments, the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, an anonymous donor and
individual contributions. The BHA is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization.
