Pittsburgh Artist Maria Mangano's South Side Slope Shrines

kapliczka pl. kapliczek : wayside shrine

etymology: Polish, diminutive of kaplica (chapel)

kapliczek (shrines) is an exploration of forgotten past in forgotten spaces.

The shrines are memorials paying silent and decaying tribute to a history I never witnessed, pieced together from books, photos, and anecdotes. It is not only the story of my changed and changing neighborhood, with its new faces, abandoned churches, and crumbling walls, but also the story of my Polish ancestors, whose history and identity are becoming lost with the passage of time and memory.

Through this piece, I search for my neighborhood's past and the influence it has on my identity as a transplant to Pittsburgh and a descendant of Polish immigrants. My hope is that others will visit the kapliczek and respond to the space, influenced by their own histories remembered and forgotten.

Artist Hung Liu, Sundown of the Last Dynasty, at the Michael Berger Art Gallery, Pittsburgh PA South Side

Artist Hung Liu, Sundown of the Last Dynasty
Pittsburgh PA, South Side.

There's an amazing art exhibit there! Lithographs, etchings, ink on paper, tapestries, archival digital prints and more. And yes, digital prints can be archival despite what bizarre assumptions people hold, including the grinch who accosted me during Unblurred last Friday.

It opened December 5th, 2009. I'm not sure how long it runs but I'll check.

Hours are Wed Sat Noon to Five

From the website:

Hung Liu was born in Changchun, China in 1948. She attended Beijing Teachers College in 1975 and studied mural painting as a graduate student at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing. Hung Liu immigrated to the United States in 1984 to attend the University of California, San Diego, where she received her MFA.

This is the 5th year that moxie DaDA has collaborated with our good friends from BYS Yoga on "CONNECT" - an artwork exhibit focusing on the Sacral and Throat Chakras and thereby executed in shades of orange and blue exploring the effects of color on mind, body and spirit. Artist Alicia Fronczek has been chosen for this year's solo show. Her works are expressive and represent her exploration of painting and paper-making as new mediums by which to express her personal connection with Spirit. She has produced works in oil, paper, and watercolor, as paintings and hanging installations.

This series means to capture the movement between creativity and creation, the matrix that underlies form, and the constant transitioning between these worlds as seen within the framework of the Sacral and Throat Chakras, complimentary parts of a holistic Chakra system. The energy moves on a continuous spectrum from idea, energy, thought, matrix, moving into form, creation, manifestation, actualized potential and back again to "CONNECT" to the natural rhythm of existence.

Artist Talk May 30, 2009 6pm

Alicia is also a Reiki Master, Massage Therapist and Spiritual Counselor that has been seeing clients and facilitating workshops on chakras, spirituality and wellness locally and nationally for 5 years. Pittsburgh Artists Get Passed Over ?

I was wondering when someone would write an opinion about the Heinz grant given to L.A. artist Glenn Kaino. Check out Kurt Shaw's Industrial art project deserved funding nod . What I don't see in the article is an attempt to get a comment from Tom Sokolowski. When I first read the news about the grant a few weeks ago my immediate thoughts were (1) what other artists and projects were considered and (2) why would an out of town artist be better suited. Now I'm also wondering if this really is just a temporary 6 month display then where the heck is it going after that? Temporary public art with that amount of money involved? Odd.
