Jumbled Notes on Fire

Everything in art depends upon this, its varieties. Some say it is amorous passion. Others a suffering. Others the Spirit.

Sprouting expression—genius or madness or both. Perhaps the fleshing out of all other things it can said to be. Fire undergirds, a moving thing that never moves.

For this is what happens when the fire burns brightly and cannot be contained: the necessity to do what is present, right there in your mind to do, damming all other thought, wanting to flash out, lick everything to ash. Sprouting expression.

Part and parcel of the process.

A poem is a fire, a flickering thing that heats and disposes, melts away awareness: gets at everything but what the thing is. Burns away just to build up. Makes the mind the realest the thing, the images like figments and yet like flesh: moving in the mind is still movement; images created are from brains that jolt out life and blood to welcome them.

Stories: torches. Their fire elongates, make sure to burn every part clean through, endure long enough to explain. Their fire makes us see. Their replication is a reality: things are not lost in projecting who we are and what we see, what emanates from everything around us. Things are not lost: it is just expression cannot contain. And things spread like wild flames. Something burns beyond the fire that is burning.

And one bears it at the tip of a brush or a pen. Part and parcel of the process.

Come Fire: let us play with you.

condition how we view ourselves and others as well as how our individual
experiences condition such perception. Notable publications featuring Drumhann’s work include: The Pinch Journal, Switchback and The Emerson Review.

Cyndi Gacosta was born and raised in San Diego, California spending only a few years of her early childhood in Sorsogon, Philippines. She studied literature

Mary Packett spent her childhood equally in suburbia and the countryside. To this she directly relates her indecisiveness. The most important thing she ever learned was from her grandmother: how to float in water. Scared to ever forget anything, as a child she started taking photos of what she did daily, and never looked back. Mary now resides in Brooklyn and by day works as an assistant photo rep. She is still focusing on her own projects while not at the office.

Tania Runyan’s chapbook, Delicious Air, was published by Finishing Line Press and awarded the 2007 Book of the Year citation by the Conference on Christianity and Literature. New York.

Yvonne Valenza graduated with a BFA in 2006 from Kutztown University of Pennsylvania and concentrated in Printmaking. Most of her work takes on relationships: the struggle of bondage and freedom between one another, with God, and with the self. An integral part of processing relationships this way is discerning what is known, tangible, or visible, and what unknown, mysterious, or invisible. What we see, how we act in our relationships with people and the world around us is wound up in intangible variables such as history, spirituality within and without, and the way we think and feel. Yvonne is married and lives with her husband, two cats, and two turtles in Philadelphia.

Brian Wilkins is the editor of Scarab, a literary magazine for the iPhone. He holds a MFA in Poetry from the University of New Hampshire. His work is available or forthcoming in Two Review, Permafrost, Pure Francis, and Sententia.

This Pittsburgh Art Blog Needs Your Help!

I'm hoping to keep up the volunteer effort here and could use some help. Passing the word on to anyone in the Pittsburgh region who has even a remote interest in visual art and asking them to bookmark or subscribe the blog would be a huge help. There are a ton of art events going on in the area and the blog is an attempt to get the word out on "quality" art events.

Most of the traffic to this blog is a result of search engine tagging (accounts for 8,000 of the 10,000 monthly hits right now) and in order for me to take this to the next level I'm looking for return visits. Also I need your input on whether to continue the Pittsburgh art articles summary for the month, eg November is here, as well as the monthly art event guide, November 2008 is here.

If you have a blog or website linking the blog and website would be great. Yours may even be linked on my blog already, if not then shoot me an email. Donations, advertising, and sponsor info is here.

Comments are welcome and encouraged on this and all posts.

Thanks, I appreciate your help.

I've been a fan and follower of This Is Happening for several years and recommend you create a profile and specify your event preferences so you can receive a rundown on what's going on in Pittsburgh. It's the most comprehensive and customizable resource for Pittsburgh events I know of. I don't recommend going hog wild with the event preferences as you'll end up with a seemingly endless list ( cause there's like a lot goin and stuff).

Pittsburgh Artist John Lienert

On May 24, 2008, the art of Pittsburgh artist John Lienert was on display at the Bellevue Art Crawl. If you were lucky enough to see his work I would appreciate any posts here about what you were able to see and if you have photographs. I was hiking through Yellowstone's backcountry at the time and wish I had at least been able to blog the event. These are the types of rare exhibits which reward those who keep an eye out for what's going on in Pittsburgh. There was a May 22 Tribune article and I came across a flickr page with some images and a write up... Also you can see his work again Saturday July 12, 2008, more info here.

Excerpts:

John Lienert: 1924 - 1974

John Lienert was a fireman, ironworker, husband, father and artist. Lienert’s work has been viewed by very few people outside of his immediate family since his death in 1974. Lienert began sketching in pencil and charcoal in the 1950s, progressing to water colors and oils. In the 1960s he began sculpting. He started with plaster, then wood, stone and finally metal.
...
In 1966, John Lienert was a Pittsburgh firefighter, stationed on the fireboat, the “Scully.” The “Scully was docked at the bottom of Fourth Street on Pittsburgh’s Southside. To pass the time between fire calls and maintenance duties, he set up a workbench on the dock to do his sculpting. A June 2, 1966 Pittsburgh Post-Gazette article and photo shows him sculpting plaster busts on the shore of the Monongahela River.
...
Unfortunately John Lienert passed away at the young age of forty-nine in April of 1974. Since that time no one outside of his immediate family and friends has viewed any of his work. For the first time in thirty-four years Lienert’s paintings and sculptures will be displayed at the Bellevue Art Crawl on May 24. The third floor of the old G C Murphy building will be transformed into an art gallery.

The Pittsburgh Technology Council is proud to announce the 15 MINUTES GALLERY — a new exhibition space that will showcase the works of regional artists and innovators. The 15 minutes Gallery will launch an exhibition beginning this June. All artwork will be displayed from June 1 through August 31, 2008. Through this progressive initiative, it is the Council’s intent to recognize the synergy that exists between the technological and the artistic communities in Pittsburgh and the impact each component will have on the region’s future. To strengthen the link between these dynamic and innovative communities, the Council has partnered with Pittsburgh’s Sirani Gallery. Pittsburgh Art: Art Company, Inc Article on Pgh Arts

I wanted to repost the below article link to independent journalist Matthew Newton's article on Pittsburgh art, a must read for anyone in the region and of any so called "rust belt" region (i personally don't like the rust belt jargon which so many people use but don't worry it doesn't take away from the great content and quotes in the below article).

Art Company, Inc.: The history that once defined Pittsburgh and the questions that nearly every Rust Belt city currently faces
By Matthew Newton , The Next American City

http://americancity.org/magazine/article/art-company-inc-newton/

A great article- in particular I appreciated the honest comments from Manny Theiner of Garfield Artworks about the relation of a strong economy in Pittsburgh, job creation and how that relates to the arts.

[Editorial disclaimer from Rick Byerly] The elephant in the room as far as I'm concerned is the lack of creation of jobs in the for-profit sector in the Pittsburgh region. The high tax syndrome simply cannot be a non-issue in that debate.

Announcing Health Coverage for the Arts

The Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council is proud to announce the arrival of health coverage for local individual artists and part-time and seasonal employeesof local cultural organizations. This is not a traditional health insurance program, but a limited benefit medical plan that was designed based on input from the arts community about desired benefits and pricing. The HM Care Advantage plan, underwritten by HM Life Insurance Company, starts at under $60 per month.

Eligible Arts Council members will have the opportunity to choose from three tiers of coverage. The plan pays a fixed amount for benefits including physician office visits, annual wellness tests and screenings, ambulance and emergency room coverage as well as discounts on pharmacy, vision, fitness and wellness services. Some plans also include an additional critical illness component and coverage options include individual, spouse, family or child(ren)only coverage. Coverage becomes effective on July 1, 2008. You can’t be turned down for coverage, and there are no medical questions to answer.

Visit the Arts Council’s website for dates of upcoming information meetings and webinars and to download an informational brochure. With the introduction of this plan, the Arts Council has taken an important first step towards making healthcare coverage available to everyone in the local artscommunity who needs it. We look forward to taking more steps forward in the future!

Questions about specifics of the plan? Download a brochure at www.pittsburghartscouncil.org. Further information can be accessed by calling 800.481.9979 where customer service representatives for the HM Care Advantage plan are available to answer your questions from 8:30 am to 7 pm, Monday through Friday. Are you part of an organization or arts business interested in offering this plan to your parttimeor seasonal employees? To Visual Artists, Art Galleries, and Venues in Pittsburgh and Western PA in general:

The Pittsburgh Art blog i run http://pittsburghgalleries.blogspot.com/ gets good search engine placement and appears regularly on the site http://outside.in/Pittsburgh_PA . I post Pittsburgh area art show and event information ( not just Pittsburgh but Western PA in general) so all you need to do is send an email to rick(at)uniquetake.com with the information as you want it shown (preparing it in html helps me but not necessary). you can attach an image as well in the email. Please understand that due to this being a volunteer effort I'm limiting requests to Visual Artists eg mediums like sculpture, metal, glass, painting, photography etc etc ( sorry but I can't cover Musicians, Performing Artists etc).

If you're a gallery and you have a newsletter all i need is signed up for that and I will post new info as i receive it.
