· Raku Dreams, John Dorinsky. The works in this exhibition are part of an ongoing series devoted to the expression of dream imagery using the Raku ceramic firing process. Raku firing is like trying to capture a dream. The artist must gaze vigilantly through on rushing billows of smoke. He awaits the decisive moment to yank the ware from the blackening shadows. Upon awakening, the dreamer scurries to seize fugitive images with paper and pen before they dart from conscious memory. Dreams and Raku plunge their practitioners into a universe that is accidental, chaotic, unknown and momentary. They emerge from their trials, however, richly rewarded by the surprise and delight of unforeseen revelations. The designs are conceived as a planned series of resists to the one undeniable reality of Raku: the reduction fire. This occurs when the ware is taken from the kiln glowing hot and placed in a chamber where it catches fire and is promptly smothered. The trapped smoke from the fire will permeate the unglazed surface of the clay with black carbon. The glazed areas of the design resist the carbon completely. They will shine iridescently against the matte black of the areas that have absorbed carbon. In a process that Dorinsky calls “sand pattern resist,” the plate is placed face down in the sand and set on fire from the back. Wherever the sand touches the plate, it blocks the carbon. This creates a contrapuntal pattern of black and white that accompanies the glazed areas with surprisingly beautiful results. Working or cooperating with the elemental forces: fire, earth, air and water is one of the great attractions of Raku. For Dorinsky, Raku is a spiritual process. It is a means of putting mental images from the unconscious into play with the elements. “As the artist, I become the intermediary of these conflicting and disparate forces. I direct the process. In my work, I orchestrate fire, earth, air and dreams.” Mar 17-22. Tue-Sat 9:00a.m.-5:00p.m. Reception Mar 20, 6:00- 9:00p.m. Area restaurants: Pho Minh Vietnamese, People’s Indian, Tram’s Kitchen Indian, Graziano’s Pizza.

The Clay Penn, 5111 Penn Avenue, 412-361-2540. no handicap restroom.
· Decalcomania, Recent Ceramic Work by Laura Jean McLaughlin. Decalcomania (with no pre-conceived notion) was a game that the surrealist artists played in which they would spread gouache, ink or oil paint onto a non-absorbant surface and then press it onto a canvas or paper and then pull out imagery much like the Rohrschach used by psychologists. The Clay Penn was purchased by Laura Jean in 2002 and was formerly a paint your own pottery business that left behind hundreds of slip cast kitschy molds from the 60’s-80’s. The solo exhibition of Laura Jean McLaughlin’s current work includes hand-built figurative sculptures as well as funky slip cast sculptures and teapots that are constructed from parts of these molds using the technique of relying on her subconsious to construct and embellish the forms she creates . The Clay Penn houses Laura Jean McLaughlin’s studio and collection which also includes an eclectic mix of work by artists such as Matt Nolen, Yih-Wen Kuo, Peter Gourfain, Ron Meyers, Matt West, George Bowes, August Rolin, Jenny Lind and Louise Radochonski. · Clay and Print, Heather Coffey, David Israel, Jeff Irwin, Kathy King, Les Lawrence, Naitoh Megumi, Nolan Jennifer, Scott Rench, Paul Scott, Ian F. Thomas, Shalene Valenzuela, Paul Andrew Wandless. Clay and Printmaking have been combined in various ways for decades, but hasn’t really been recognized as its own genre unique unto itself. Its been viewed more as an interesting way for a few artists to place an image or design onto clay. Image Transfer is much more than cleverly using printing techniques to enhance a clay surface. The work created is not about clay or about printmaking. It’s truly something different and occupies its own artistic ground with one foot in clay and one foot in printmaking. Combining clay processes and printmaking techniques to make art is a natural and logical evolution of the two versatile mediums. This hybrid art of clay and print has its own exciting rules, lexicon, attitude, views, aesthetics, traditions, cannons and purpose. All of which are currently being defined and established in the present by those choosing to investigate this way of working. These artists or clay printers are merging processes, tools and techniques of different mediums to express themselves visually in a way that is unique, fresh, bold and new. The work created is visually dynamic, technically challenging and intellectually curious. Image transfer on clay is a new voice in the discourse of art utilizing the best of two mediums to convey the message. Organized by Paul Andrew Wandless. Mar 5-Apr 5. · Lingua Franca, Craig Clifford, Kristen Morgin, Matt Wedel, Peter Morgan, Armando Ramos, Tae-Hoon Kim, Debbie Kupinsky, Sin-ying (Cassandra) Ho. Lingua Franca brings together eight artists who communicate to the viewer in a broad way. Ranging from artists who use imagery from mass culture or art history, to those who pull inspiration from cartoon style and kitsch objects, these artists are able to speak to the viewer in a ‘lingua franca’ or common language. Though the works contain layers of meaning, they are able to tap into the symbols, objects and colors of our everyday existence in a way that encourages us to reevaluate them. Included artists range from nontraditional ceramic sculptors to those who work with the vessel as an expressive vehicle. Organized by Debbie Kupinsky.
· Terra Nova, Michael Angelotti, Karen Bolton, Gregory Byard, Brandon O'Hara. Invitational
exhibition. Curated by Steven Kemenyffy.
· After China: The Politics of Fabrication, Sin-ying Ho, Alison J. Petty, Philip Read, Ian F.
Thomas, Marie Weichman, Dryden Wells. “At what point does one’s authorship of a work become affected by matters of craftsmanship or fabrication (by others)?” In the mass production climate of China, with so many opportunities to “subcontract” aspects of one’s ceramic work, how does this affect considerations of authenticity, originality, or even authorship? By hiring craftsmen to do many aspects of one’s work (e.g., brush decorate, mold making, casting, glazing), are we as ceramic artists then freer to focus on the conceptual aspects of our work? Or do we become too far removed from artwork’s production? Organized by Ian F. Thomas.

· Constant Conversations: Educating Ourselves in Clay, Kip O'Krongly, Monica Bowman, Mel Griffin, Martina Lantin, Megan Mitchell. Continuing to grow and develop as a ceramic artist requires not only studio work, but also constant conversation and critique. For five young working artists spread across the country it is the Internet that helps to keep us connected and to push our work and ideas forward. We use a blog as a staging ground for critiques about our work, our artist statements, and our direction. Constant Conversation: Educating Ourselves in Clay shows examples of work from this blog, as well as comments posted by the members, highlighting another way to evolve as an artist. Organized by Kip O'Krongly.

Organized by Justin Rothshank.
· Our Nature, Your Nature, James Leslie, Amanda Lehtola, Dong Jun Shin. Invitational exhibition. Organized by James Leslie.
· Finding A Path-Honing a Line, Jury Smith, Kenton Baker, Shalya Marsh, Beverly Fisher. Tactile and colorful, tensile and contemplative, the common thread in this group of four Pennsylvania artists is found in their respective interests in memory, history, and language, a love of commonplace - and a way of working that allows process and improvisation to affect concept and form. Committed to following the arc of an idea, each artist uniquely conveys a respect for fluidity along with an acceptance of the work endlessly unfolding. Organized by Beverly Fisher.

The wood kiln at Clarion University in Clarion Pennsylvania is first and foremost a teaching kiln. Built in 1991 the kiln has become the focal point for a community of students and educators from around the region interested in learning and exploring the art of wood fired ceramics. Fired in the spring, summer and fall the kiln provides continual engagement in wood firing that is rarely afforded to many students, and the open atmosphere allows anyone willing to do their share of the work an opportunity to experience wood firing. This show will gather past and present participants to showcase some of the work produced over the last 16 years. Participants will consist of regional faculty from across the state, current MFA and BFA candidates as well as working potters. Organized by Mike Stek. Above shows: Mar 19-22. · Black Clay in PA: A Dialogue In Flux, Sharif Bey, Syd Carpenter, Michael Clemens, Justin Coleman, Vanessa German, Marica Jackson, Mary Martin, Malcolm Mobutu Smith, Paul Andrew Wandless. “Clay is found all over the globe in various shades and textures. While ceramic wares are not as prevalent as in the past, clay continues to be a utilitarian and artistically expressive material that has also spurred major innovations in science and industry. Organized by Dr. Sharif Bey of Winston Salem State University, a Pittsburgh native who discovered ceramics as a teenager through Manchester Craftsmen’s Guild, this exhibition presents vessels, sculptures and installation art by nine African American ceramic artists who are from or reside in Pittsburgh or Philadelphia. The cultural history of these artists and clay’s potential to inform their personal excavations of identity are explored through a broad range of processes and techniques. Several of the artists employ traditional African ceramics processes and hand-building techniques, and draw from their interests in African rituals, African design and symbolism, slave narratives and folklore. Others, however, use European techniques while drawing inspiration from art history, popular culture, media representations, graffiti, and religious, political, and historical references. A distinguishing feature of African American cultural identity is that, like clay, it is continually reconsidered, redefined, and reshaped. Mar 14-May 31. This exhibition is intended to showcase a group of artists who have embraced the possibilities and potential of the material, but who don’t rely on clay’s innate qualities as the overriding concept. The artists in the exhibition, while adhering to the philosophy of clay as concept, still maintain individual creative agendas. They use clay as a tool, looking beyond the material; they confront and explore issues related to gender, hypocrisy, dualitiy, irony, consumption, and the ephemeral. They question our perceptions, our politics, and our culture, at times creating a new language or narrative. They are influenced by history, architecture, iconography and domesticity. They are cynics, seducers, and subverters, in the most sublime and perverse manners. Curated by Benjamin Schulman. Mar 17-22.
