The Pittsburgh Art Blog
The Pittsburgh Art Blog features selected pittsburgh artists and upcoming exhibits with photos from the artists and galleries. since the major press outlets do not go beyond a directory listing of exhibits, blogs are needed to promote pittsburgh artists and their work. the blog also calls attention to the inferiority complex of pittsburgh art and how it's perpetuated by the major players in town. Started on August 20, 2007.pittsburgh area galleries and art venues are listed at the sister site www.PghGalleries.com.the blog and website are volunteer projects from fine art photographer and pittsburgh art advocate rick byerly, www.RickByerly.com.

Pittsburgh Murals and Public Art Info Mural Artists from the Pittsburgh Galleries Blog
Lately a reoccurring theme has been the difficulty in finding information online about Pittsburgh art in general. Either there is no information or incomplete or I'm running into my own posts from the Pittsburgh Art Blog. In the case of Pittsburgh murals I was able to find information it's just that it took a while as it was spread out!
I was able to find an older list from the Carnegie Library here which I list towards the bottom of this post. Many of their research projects cover from 1930 to 2000 which is really cool. The main page for their research is www.clpgh.org/research . They cover a ton of ground.
Also the Pittsburgh Office of Public Art has tours and you can download free brochures here which cover the Cultural District, Retail District / Firstside, The North Shore, Grant Street Corridor District, and Oakland. You can also order them to be shipped for a fee, info at the link above.
As for many of the Pittsburgh murals which have been created from 2003-2006 The Sprout Fund, both being an amazing force and source of funding for many of them, also has a map and lists them by year. They are in the middle of revamping their website but you can go here to their old site for a larger pdf which you can print or just check out the image I've inserted below which you can click on for a better look. They also list them by year with summaries and photos here . Not all murals are documented there so if you know of others please let me know. For instance the "Welcome to Deutschtown" mural, designed and created by Pittsburgh-based artist David Lee Edwards, did not receive a lot of press, either in paper or online. More info here . If you're an artist looking for mural opportunities GPAC (Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council) has a link here .
Update: 2010 Sprout funded murals are here. The Sprout Fund is in the process of updating their new website as of October 2011 so hopefully it won't be long until you can find all the mural info in one section.
2013 Update: New PghMurals.com website.
Any other good info you have about public art let me know!
Thanks, Rick Byerly

Artforum on Takashi Murakami and the Art of Business CMU Pittsburgh Wed April 23, 2008
COMPANY MAN: TAKASHI MURAKAMI AND THE ART OF 'BUSINESS ART' Scott Rothkopf Senior Editor Artforum International Wednesday, April 23 at 6-7:30pm in Kresge Hall (CFA) CMU in Pittsburgh, PA (Oakland)
THE ART OF BUSINESS/BUSINESS AS ART: A DISCUSSION ON BUSINESS AND ART WITH SCOTT ROTHKOPF, SENIOR EDITOR OF ARTFORUM
Delegation, agency, team production, monitoring, group entrepreneurship tic invention? "Business art is the step that comes after Art," Andy Warhol famously opined in 1975. Yet despite the recent explosion of the international art market and the crossover superstardom of figures such as Damien Hirst and Jeff Koons, perhaps only one artist has truly taken Warhol at his word: Takashi Murakami.
This lecture will explore Murakami's far-flung "business art" endeavors and their relationship to his painting and sculpture, within the context of precedents including DalÃ, Warhol, and Haring. A household name in his native Japan, Murakami (b. 1963) first gained international celebrity in 2002 with his series of Louis Vuitton handbags, which grossed more than three-hundred million dollars in their first year of sales alone. Although this corporate collaboration may be his most well-known foray into the world of commerce, it is but one point in a constellation of activities that dwarfs his gallery-bound paintings and sculpture in administrative scope and market reach.
In addition to churning out finely crafted artworks coveted by collectors, he is busy producing related mass-market merchandise; running his own art fair; managing the careers of young Japanese artists; planning group exhibitions; hosting a radio show; and pursuing commercial "collaborations" in the form of advertising and branding projects with the likes of rapper Kanye West Scott Rothkopf is a senior editor of Artforum, as well as an arthistorian and critic. He has been a guest curator at Harvard University's Fogg Art Museum, where he most recently co-organized "This Is Not a Time for Dreaming" (2004), a site-specific installation and film by the French artist Pierre Huyghe made in response to Le Corbusier's only North American building, the Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts. At the Fogg, he was also curator and catalogue author for the exhibition "Mel Bochner Photographs 1966¬1969" (2002), which traveled to the Carnegie Museum of Art in Pittsburgh.
As a frequent contributor to Artforum, Rothkopf has written on major exhibitions, including the Venice and Whitney biennials, and on artists such asJeff Koons, Ed Ruscha, Sol LeWitt, Diller+Scofidio, Carroll Dunham, Josiah McElheny, T. J. Willcox, and Karen Kilimnik, who was the subject of his 2007 book, Period Eye: Karen Kilimnik's Fancy Pictures, co-authored with Meredith Martin. His other museum and gallery catalogue contributions include monographic essays on Wade Guyton, Eva Hesse, Jasper Johns, Roy Lichtenstein, Kelley Walker, and Terry Winters, as well as text on Takashi Murakami for his current traveling retrospective, organized by the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. Rothkopf has chaired public panels, including "Photography and Conceptual Art" with Ed Ruscha, John Baldessari, and Jan Dibbets, and "Transatlantic," a College Art Association session devoted to the interchange between American and European artists in the 1960s and'70s. His essay on Surrealism in American art of the 1960s appeared in 2005 in the catalogue of "Surrealism USA," organized by the National Academy Museum, and a book length version of this text is currently under contract with Yale University Press.
Sponsored by the Office of the Provost, The School of Art, and the New Minor in Innovation, Entrepreneurship, and Economic Development. Contact person: Melissa Ragona, Assistant Professor of Art, School of Art, Carnegie Mellon University, mragona@andrew.cmu.edu Tel: (412) 779-9257

Pittsburgh Filmmakers Photography Thesis Work on display until April 27, 2008
In case you missed the opening Friday, March 28, 2008, the Pittsburgh Filmmakers Thesis Still Photography Exhibit runs until April 27, 2008. I checked out the work and of particular note are artists Bryan Conley, Matt Carrico, and Jordan Beckham. Filmmakers Galleries are located at 477 Melwood Avenue, North Oakland and gallery hours are Monday through Friday, noon to 5:00. The Gallery is located on the 2nd floor.
March 28 – April 27, 2008.
Photography work by Pittsburgh Filmmakers’ Thesis photography students: Bryan Conley (image above), Julie Bodura, Kelsy Kradel, Tricia Harvey, and Vanna Weaver. An opening Reception will be held on Friday, March 28 from 5:30 to 8:00 pm. Filmmakers Galleries 477, Melwood Ave, Pittsburgh, PA 15213 (North Oakland).
Press Release: Filmmakers Announces Senior Photography Show (Pittsburgh, PA) – Pittsburgh Filmmakers announces a group photography show featuring thesis work by eight seniors of the BFA Photography program. The show is on view from March 28 through April 20, 2008. An Opening Reception will be held on Friday, March 28 from 5:30 to 8:00pm. It is free and open to the public. “These promising students seem to be reconciling their past, present and unknown future,” explains Associate Professor Sue Abramson, head of the Photography program at Filmmakers. “Also, in this year’s show, a recurring theme of obsession emerged.” The BFA in Photography is offered through a cooperative arrangement with Pittsburgh Filmmakers and Point Park University. It is the only undergraduate Fine Arts degree in Photography in the Pittsburgh area.
The thesis show features an eclectic mix of styles from the following artists:
Jordan Beckham - Color portraits of friends and family; environmental stop action photos. The subject throws objects (that represent their obsessions) towards the camera. The result is both fun and cathartic.
Matt Carrico – Large scale (color) composite/collage portraits represent memories, feelings and fears from the artist's childhood. Bryan Conley - Seductive and abstract black and white landscapes of the mind that deal with the artist's transitory state of mind.
Julia Bodura - Modern (color) reproductions and interpretations of well-known works of art. The artist and sometimes her mother are the models in these new versions.
Tricia Harvey - Long exposures documenting the lights and movement of roller coasters from the ride at night. These also portray a coming-of-age theme.
Kelsey Kradel - These are color photographic journal entries from daily life. They document personal interiors to public spaces.
Danielle Thirkell - Humorous domestic interiors with the female nude as object, in fact literally becoming one with the home.
Vanna Weaver - A document of antiques -- the people who collect them, the places to buy or sell them, the shops and flea markets.
Filmmakers Galleries are located at 477 Melwood Avenue, North Oakland. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, noon to 5:00, and evenings when films are screened. Free and open to the public. More information: 412-681-5449, or http://www.pghfilmmakers.org/ .

· Lingua Franca, Craig Clifford, Kristen Morgin, Matt Wedel, Peter Morgan, Armando Ramos, Tae-Hoon Kim, Debbie Kupinsky, Sin-ying (Cassandra) Ho. Lingua Franca brings together eight artists who communicate to the viewer in a broad way. Ranging from artists who use imagery from mass culture or art history, to those who pull inspiration from cartoon style and kitsch objects, these artists are able to speak to the viewer in a ‘lingua franca’ or common language. Though the works contain layers of meaning, they are able to tap into the symbols, objects and colors of our everyday existence in a way that encourages us to reevaluate them. Included artists range from nontraditional ceramic sculptors to those who work with the vessel as an expressive vehicle. Organized by Debbie Kupinsky.
· Terra Nova, Michael Angelotti, Karen Bolton, Gregory Byard, Brandon O'Hara. Invitational
exhibition. Curated by Steven Kemenyffy.
· After China: The Politics of Fabrication, Sin-ying Ho, Alison J. Petty, Philip Read, Ian F.
Thomas, Marie Weichman, Dryden Wells. “At what point does one’s authorship of a work become affected by matters of craftsmanship or fabrication (by others)?” In the mass production climate of China, with so many opportunities to “subcontract” aspects of one’s ceramic work, how does this affect considerations of authenticity, originality, or even authorship? By hiring craftsmen to do many aspects of one’s work (e.g., brush decorate, mold making, casting, glazing), are we as ceramic artists then freer to focus on the conceptual aspects of our work? Or do we become too far removed from artwork’s production? Organized by Ian F. Thomas.
· Chautauqua School of Art, Val Cushing, Emily Reason, Nicole Peters, Alec Karros, Jeff Greenham, Ron Meyers, Kris Lyons, Scott Cornish, Matt West, Julia Galloway, Mark Boguski, Heidi Sowa, Polly Ann Martin, Judith Salomon, Maureen Pahlman West, Paul Linhares, Christian Kuharik, Frank Martin. · Emotional Affair, Mike Prather. Solo exhibition. Figurative work with an edge.
· Constant Conversations: Educating Ourselves in Clay, Kip O'Krongly, Monica Bowman, Mel Griffin, Martina Lantin, Megan Mitchell. Continuing to grow and develop as a ceramic artist requires not only studio work, but also constant conversation and critique. For five young working artists spread across the country it is the Internet that helps to keep us connected and to push our work and ideas forward. We use a blog as a staging ground for critiques about our work, our artist statements, and our direction. Constant Conversation: Educating Ourselves in Clay shows examples of work from this blog, as well as comments posted by the members, highlighting another way to evolve as an artist. Organized by Kip O'Krongly.

· Our Nature, Your Nature, James Leslie, Amanda Lehtola, Dong Jun Shin. Invitational exhibition. Organized by James Leslie.
· Finding A Path-Honing a Line, Jury Smith, Kenton Baker, Shalya Marsh, Beverly Fisher. Tactile and colorful, tensile and contemplative, the common thread in this group of four Pennsylvania artists is found in their respective interests in memory, history, and language, a love of commonplace - and a way of working that allows process and improvisation to affect concept and form. Committed to following the arc of an idea, each artist uniquely conveys a respect for fluidity along with an acceptance of the work endlessly unfolding. Organized by Beverly Fisher.
· Throw Back: Ceramic Evolution, Joseph Blue Sky, Eva Kwong, Beth Linderberger, Kirk Mangus, Judith Salomon, Cheryl Shepherd, Donna Webb, Bob Yost. Invitational exhibition. Organized by Donna Webb.

James Chaney, Michael Stek IV, Kathy Rhoads, David Gallagher, Amanda Wolf and Adam Yungbluth, John Eden, Joyce Jablonski, Patsy Cox, Rodney Martino, Scott Davies, Joe Delphia, Tom Pergolia. The wood kiln at Clarion University in Clarion Pennsylvania is first and foremost a teaching kiln. Built in 1991 the kiln has become the focal point for a community of students and educators from around the region interested in learning and exploring the art of wood fired ceramics. Fired in the spring, summer and fall the kiln provides continual engagement in wood firing that is rarely afforded to many students, and the open atmosphere allows anyone willing to do their share of the work an opportunity to experience wood firing. This show will gather past and present participants to showcase some of the work produced over the last 16 years. Participants will consist of regional faculty from across the state, current MFA and BFA candidates as well as working potters. Organized by Mike Stek. Above shows: Mar 19-22.
