Too Shallow for Diving: the 21st Century is Treading Water

May 14th at 7:00pm Too Shallow for Diving: the 21st Century is Treading Water opens to the public at the American Jewish Museum at the Jewish Community Center in Squirrel Hill. I will be speaking at 7:30 to introduce the project and to talk with you about creating new communities; the role of the artist; and issues on water and the environment. Please join me for an evening of engagement and celebration until 9:00 pm.

Throughout the course of the exhibition, environmental organizations will host citizen action workshops at the JCC, including Clean Water Action, Penn Environment and Penn Future. Green Drinks, a networking event for people working to make Pittsburgh greener in the areas of business, policy, new technologies and activism will be hosted by the AJM. Former professor Conrad "Dan" Volz, Jr., who recently resigned from his position at the University of Pittsburgh this April over his public health advocacy on water and natural gas drilling will give a presentation. Too Shallow for Diving artists will host workshops throughout the course of the exhibition which concludes July 28. All events are free and open to the public.

Too Shallow for Diving: the 21st Century is Treading Water has received funding from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Jewish Healthcare Foundation, The Buhl Foundation and The Sprout Fund. All of the exhibition's artists have received honorariums to support the creation of new and provocative work.

What: ret·ro·spec·tive - A celebration and exhibition opening of the artists that have exhibited at Modernformations Gallery during its 10-year history with artists in attendance.

Who: Over 50 artists from solo, group, and installation shows that have have exhibited during the 10-year history of the gallery.

Where: Modernformations Gallery and Performance Space – 4919 Penn Avenue, Pgh, Pa 15224

(Part of Unblurred - The First Friday art walk on Penn Avenue.)

When: Opening reception: 7 to 10pm, Friday June 3rd 2011. Show runs to July 22, 2010.

Retrospective:

Modernformations is privileged to host an exhibition of works created by artists who have been an integral part of the gallery's 10-year history. Some are Pittsburgh natives. Others moved here for a variety of reasons, from schooling to employment to complete chance, and made it their hometown as well. All share the common connection in this place.

Modernformations was founded to exhibit the up-and-coming artists of Pittsburgh, whether native or adopted, and to encourage and support the notion that Pittsburgh has the potential to nurture the arts as well as any city. The anniversary exhibit will feature documentation from many of the significant events during our 10 years - from poetry readings to concerts, film showings to dance, plays to fundraisers, and many other unique gatherings!

Information about the artists:

57 artists, 12 group exhibitions, 2 installation exhibitions, and 16 other significant contributors will be featured. Some artists include Ben Kehoe, Andy Kehoe, Jairan Sadeghi, Jesse Best, Jeremy Beightol, and Mike Budai. A complete list has been included in the press packet along with the month and year of each exhibit.

Mission Statement:
ModernFormations Gallery and Performance Space was founded in June of 2001, and since then, has been committed to contributing to the growing artistic culture of Pittsburgh, the Penn Avenue arts community, and to the surrounding neighborhoods. ModernFormations Gallery and Performance Space is dedicated to representing the diverse artistic, musical, and dramatic talent of Pittsburgh.

Whether it’s on the intimate stage, live music, or artwork hung in the gallery space, the goal is to create an atmosphere conducive to bringing interaction and discussion about the arts. In order to meet this goal, and that of promoting art in Pittsburgh, ModernFormations exhibits a diverse range of art mediums including modern visual art, performance art, music, plays, films, and literary readings. ModernFormations will continue to give emerging artists, whose talent is greater than their opportunity to exhibit, a chance to show their work in Pittsburgh.

Call for entries: Hello Kitty

Sewickley Public Library will host “Hello Kitty,” an exhibit of cat paintings, drawings and prints (woodblock, litho, e.g.) during the months of July & August. Artists of any age are invited to submit entries. Entries must be no larger than 30” x 30”, and mounted on a material firm enough to be set on an easel. Framing is not necessary. No photographs or photo based images.

The library's display cases are lighted and secure. We receive over 25,000 visits per month.

You may submit 1 or 2 entries, and they should be submitted via email to: sewickleydisplaycase@einetwork.net Your entry should give title, medium, and size. Your entry should also Include your name, address, phone number and email address.

The deadline for submission is June 1st. A jury of four cat lovers and art professionals will select the works for the show, and a “Best of Show” will be selected. If your cat is selected for the exhibit, you will be notified by email or phone by mid-June. All artists will be responsible for delivery and pick-up of art works.

The Creative Capital | Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Grant Program supports individual writers whose work addresses contemporary visual art through grants in the following categories: articles, blogs, books, new and alternative media, and short-form writing. Grants range from $3,000 to $50,000 depending on the needs and scope of the project.

Designed to encourage and reward writing about contemporary art that is rigorous, passionate, eloquent and precise, as well as to create a broader audience for arts writing, the Arts Writers Grant Program aims to strengthen the field as a whole and to ensure that critical writing remains a valued mode of engaging the visual arts.
