To kick off the 99th year of the organization, the Associated Artists of Pittsburgh present, “99” at the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts, February 7 – March 15, 2009, Reception, Saturday, February 7, 2009 from 5:30 to 8:00 pm. In 2009, think 99… years of amazing art in the greater Pittsburgh region! This is the first exhibition of Associated Artists of Pittsburgh’s 99th year, just one year away from the Centennial. And, we asked our artists to create outside of the paint box and really think creatively about what “99” means to each artist and the organization. And, the AAP artists did not disappoint.

Pittsburgh Bonsai Society call for exhibit / gallery space:

The details:

They are looking for a display area as well as a vendor area, will pay for the rental of space. Display area to include approximately twenty 6' foot tables. Must be a high traffic area, preferably within city limits of Pittsburgh, they mentioned the Strip District/Downtown for example. It is a 3 day show usually in mid May or June, including set up and removal. As a space comparison, the Phipps Garden Center was used in the past and may be a little small now for them (Phipps in Shadyside, eg the Orchid Show). I'm fielding email inquiries to cut down on spam for the society.

January 26* –April 3, 2009

Seeing Jazz: A Tribute to the Masters and Pittsburgh Jazz Legends

Reception: Thursday, February 5 from 6–9 p.m. including a special performance by the MCG Jazz Class of 2008 Legends and a book signing by "Pittsburgh Jazz" author John Brewer

Manchester Craftsmen's Guild (MCG) is collaborating with artist and curator Gwendolyn Black to present Seeing Jazz: a Tribute to the Masters and Pittsburgh Jazz Legends. The exhibition will showcase works by well-known masters along with some of today's noted contemporary artists, all of whom have inspired many through their artworks dedicated to jazz. Master artists include Romare Bearden, Faith Ringgold, Allen Stringfellow, Benny Andrews, Fred Brown, Richard Mayhew, Chuck Stewart and Edmund Yaghjian.Nearly ten years ago Gwendolyn Black created and introduced Visual Expressions on Jazz, which has been a recognized event for the past several years at the Annual JVC Jazz Festival in New York. To highlight Pittsburgh’s historic contributions to jazz, the exhibition will fittingly kick off a planned national tour starting at MCG in Pittsburgh’s North Side. Black’s motivation for organizing the exhibition is to “give more visibility to visual artists who not only listen to jazz music while working but who have also been at the forefront of documenting and supporting jazz music through their art.” When Seeing Jazz: a Tribute to the Masters arrives at Manchester Craftsmen’s Guild in January, the exhibition will coincide with the conclusion of the City’s 250th anniversary and will include a special focus on legends from the steel city including a slide show of Teenie Harris photographs from the Pittsburgh Courier archive.

*Please Excuse Us. Factors beyond our control have delayed the full installation of this exhibition a week from the originally scheduled opening date. We hope you’ll come back to see the show in its entirety after January 25, 2009 and join us for the reception that is free and open to the public.

Manchester Craftsmen's Guild is housed along with its sister organization, Bidwell Training Center, in a 62,000 square foot facility located at 1815 Metropolitan Street on Pittsburgh's North Shore. Hours of operation are 8 a.m.-5:30 p.m., Monday-Friday. Designed by architect Tasso Katsalas, a pupil of Frank Lloyd Wright, Manchester Craftsmen's Guild houses visual arts and recording studios, classrooms, galleries, a cafeteria, concert hall and conference rooms designed to showcase the roles of creativity and craftsmanship in learning. Natural light pouring in through windows and skylights, terracotta-toned masonry framing archways and circular portals evoke stylistic influences of indigenous African architecture. The building's sense of warmth permeates the organizations' work with the arts and career education. Handmade objects, furniture, photographs and paintings that adorn public and private spaces create a model environment for education, exhibitions, performances and social and professional gatherings.
