Pittsburgh Artist Maria Mangano's South Side Slope Shrines

kapliczka pl. kapliczek : wayside shrine

etymology: Polish, diminutive of kaplica (chapel)

kapliczek (shrines) is an exploration of forgotten past in forgotten spaces.

The shrines are memorials paying silent and decaying tribute to a history I never witnessed, pieced together from books, photos, and anecdotes. It is not only the story of my changed and changing neighborhood, with its new faces, abandoned churches, and crumbling walls, but also the story of my Polish ancestors, whose history and identity are becoming lost with the passage of time and memory.

Through this piece, I search for my neighborhood's past and the influence it has on my identity as a transplant to Pittsburgh and a descendant of Polish immigrants. My hope is that others will visit the kapliczek and respond to the space, influenced by their own histories remembered and forgotten.

Artist in Residence: David Beattie

“David Beattie’s sculptural works combine the use of sound, movement and physics to create unlikely alliances. His reapplication of domestic objects and technologies offer a fresh reading of their use and function and allow a reinterpretation of the specific identity and history of these redundant objects.” (Exhibition text from Mercer Union Centre For Contemporary Visual Art)

David Beattie was born in N. Ireland in 1979. He earned his B.A. in Fine Art from Dublin’s National College of Art and Design, and his M.A. in Visual Art Practices from Dun Loaghaire Institute of Art, Design & Technology, also in Dublin.

He has received a number of awards including an Arts Council Artists Bursary in 2009 and a grant from the Harpo Foundation whose mission is to support artists who are under-recognized by the field.

Beattie is currently the subject of a solo exhibition at the Mercer Union Centre For Contemporary Visual Art in Toronto, Canada. Other solo shows include Butler Gallery (Kilkenny, 2009); Oonagh Young Gallery (Dublin, 2009); Mermaid Arts Centre (Bray, Co. Wicklow, 2008) and Temple Bar Gallery & Studios (Dublin, 2006).

Society of Contemporary Craft Call for Artists Emerging Artist Program

from the Society of Contemporary Craft:

We are pleased to announce a Call for Entries for the 2011 Lydon Emerging Artist Program (LEAP) Award. Established in the fall of 2007, the LEAP Award provides early career artists who show exceptional promise the opportunity to showcase a body of their work to regional, national, and international audiences. The winner of this juried award receives a $1,000 cash prize to develop a line of work to be shown exclusively through the Store at the Society for Contemporary Craft (SCC).

The guest juror for the 2011 competition is Sharon Massey. An internationally recognized jeweler, Massey received a BFA from Winthrop University in 1999, and an MFA in Metal Design from East Carolina University in 2006. She received the Art Jewelry Forum Emerging Artist Award in 2009 and was recently chosen to participate in Lucca Preziosa Young, an exhibition of eight jewelers under 35, which was exhibited in Lucca, Italy, Munich, Germany, and at the JOYA Festival of Contemporary Jewellery in Barcelona, Spain. Her work is included in the collections of the Racine Art Museum, Wisconsin, and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, England.

In the early 1970s, SCC's founder, Pittsburgh arts patron Elizabeth Rockwell Raphael recognized that artists working in craft media were exploring new directions in contemporary art, and she opened The Store for Arts and Crafts and People-Made Things in Verona, Pennsylvania. Known locally as The Store, Raphael sold artwork by young and emerging craft artists such as Wendell Castle, Lenore Tawney, Josh Simpson, Howard Kottler, and Robert Lee Morris among many others that needed wider opportunities to exhibit and sell their work. Building on this early history, it is our hope that the LEAP Award will facilitate young artists move into a career in contemporary craft.

We appreciate your assistance in announcing this opportunity to interested artists, colleagues, students, and alumni. A printable prospectus is available on our website at our website. For more information, email thestore@contemporarycraft.org or call 412.261.7003 x16.

Pittsburgh Artists Nathan Mazur, Jessica LaVecchia @ Zomnbo Gallery Lawrenceville

Zombo Gallery Presents Exhibit by Nathan Mazur and Jessica LaVecchia
"Cute & Creepy"

PITTSBURGH – Zombo Gallery, Pittsburgh’s home for hip lowbrow art, announces the an all new 2 person exhibit by local artists Jessica LaVecchia and Nathan Mazur; Cute & Creepy, opening Saturday, May 1st at 6pm.

Cute & Creepy is an exhibit comprised of paintings and other miscellaneous items by local artists Jessica LaVecchia and Nathan Mazur. As the name of the show indicates, the subject matter ranges from cute to… well, creepy. Monsters, bunnies, zombified fisher-price style little people, anthropomorphic food and heart based flatulence are all things to expect from this unique showing.
The team-up between LaVecchia and Mazur for this show was born out of the desire to hopefully expose their respective fans to one another’s work. “While our artistic styles differ from each other, there are some similarities on a more visceral level that I think people who enjoy our work will appreciate”, explains Mazur.
Cute & Creepy runs from May 1st through May 28th, 2010 at the Zombo Gallery, located at 4900 Hatfield St. in Lawrenceville. Opening reception is Saturday, May 1st at 6pm . For those unable to make it to the gallery, select pieces will be available for sale online the following day at www.scaredofbees.com/cuteandcreepy/exhibit.htm. The gallery hours are Wednesday through Saturday, 1-7pm and Sunday 1-5pm. Additional hours by appointment. For more information on Zombo Gallery, please call 412-904-3703.
Jessica LaVecchia is a remarkably prolific artist and designer from Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. In addition to paint and canvas, Jessica also creates art digitally, which she often sells as limited edition prints. She has also recently expanded her repertoire to include tattooing. To find out more about the surreal art of Jessica LaVecchia, please follow her blog at http://jeshaka.blogspot.com/
Nathan Mazur is a local artist and animator who is probably best known for his animated music videos for Parry Gripp, such as “Do You Like Waffles?”. He has had 2 previous exhibits at Zombo Gallery; “Wee Beasties” and “Mini Monsters” where he worked exclusively on miniature canvases. His clients include American Greetings, Carnegie Mellon University, Disney Television, E! Networks, Neatorama.com as well as many other smaller companies, independent filmmakers, and private commissions. He is also a member of Pittsburgh Illustrators Society. To find out more about Nathan Mazur’s work, please visit www.scaredofbees.com.

The Artist Art Auction Fundraiser Catch 22

This has been brewing in my cranium for a few years so it's had time to settle, collect, and perhaps ferment. Art benefit fundraisers often ask artists themselves to donate their work for the purpose of auctioning off the work to patrons. Sounds great but the issue most overlooked is why are artists the ones asked to donate their work, especially in Pittsburgh where it's known that few artists make a living based on their "non-commercial" art? I've spoken with gallery owners and artists over the past year on this subject and there exists a lot of questions.

Why is the artist leaned on to donate their work free of charge? Sure a lot of artists donate without looking critically at the larger picture due to their good natures and possibly think it's good exposure down the line. My biggest issue is why lean on artists given the inherent financial disadvantage most Pittsburgh artists experience. One prominent gallery owner I spoke with simply suggested the organizations should stick to events like private dinners and events which do not require artists to donate their work for auctions. There are a finite amount of art purchases in the region and the reality is that the significant art auction fundraisers take away from purchases which benefit the artists financially. The one exception I've noticed was Fe Gallery which had an option for the artist to retain a percentage. It gives the artist the option to choose. One could argue they have the option of just not participating at all but i think that to be an overly simplistic argument given the factors.

Then there is the exposure factor, meaning artists may not receive money but the exposure they receive helps them down the line. Tough to argue given the sheer amount of art at these auctions and the lack of probability further contact will be made.

Artists are generically known for giving more than they can necessarily "afford". Perhaps it's time to think why they are so often leaned upon? I think most will agree artists do a tremendous amount for their communities in their personal and job related activities. Do they really have to give their art away too?

Something to think about...

Another issue I'd like to blog about down the road is the degree to which businesses and other entities hit up artists to display their work for free based on consignment (if they actually sell). This is a practice artists themselves need to resist contributing to given the reality of the art world.

Rick Byerly

Art All Night April 24 25 Saturday 2010 Iron City Building Lawrenceville Pittsburgh PA

The official entrance to Art all Night this year will be what we are calling the breeze way. It is immediately under and too the left of the enormous 16 pound bottle of Iron pictured on the wall of the building on Liberty Ave. It is way cool. You walk straight down through buildings and memories of old time Pittsburgh. At the bottom it opens into our yard, the loading docks and inside the warehouse.........Art.

There are a variety of parking lots nearby. Iron City has one which you enter from under the railway tressel on liberty. There are large commercial lots further down liberty and towards the bluff. There is parking behind sullivan field, which is the ball field across from the church brew works. Actually there is quite a bit of parking around ... See Morethere in the commercial corridors you just have to look for it. None of the commercial business will be open on Saturday night. Steer clear of the Church Brew works clearly they need their parking.

Art All Night Lawrenceville (Saturday, April 24, 6 pm to Sunday, April 25, 2 pm 2010) is an annual celebration of arts, community and creativity. Anyone and everyone is invited to submit one (and only one) piece of artwork or sign up to perform during this one-of-a-kind neighborhood event attended by nearly 10,000 people each year. Steel Valley Arts Council presents: Seth Graham at artspace105, May 1 – 15, 20

Steel Valley Arts Council presents: Seth Graham at artspace105, May 1 – 15, 2010

CONTACT:
Steel Valley Arts Council P.O. Box 3003

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Seth Graham
May 1 – 15, 2010
artspace105
105 East Eighth Avenue
Homestead, PA 15120
(Next to the Homestead Grays Bridge)
On street parking available on 7th or 8th Avenues)

Presented by Steel Valley Arts Council, a not for profit arts organization serving the areas of Homestead, West Homestead, and Munhall.

Seth Graham is a visual artist from Buffalo, New York. He creates works using pen and ink that reflect ideas that bear significance to man’s place in nature, alchemy, death, and time among other subjects. He has developed his artwork and the style in which he produces it around the ideology that we are all part of one whole, and although we branch out and carve a niche for ourselves in life, we eventually succumb to the reclaiming hands of time and nature.

Graham’s works are often described as gritty and scratchy, but bear an elegance that demonstrates a great attention to detail. His drawings pull from a great number of sources, and each piece conveys an idea or bears a symbolic theme. The aesthetics of the pieces help to bring the message to the viewer, and at the same time, make the delivery artistic.

Graham’s mission in creating these works is to induce thought, and to prompt questions. There is a great deal of symbolism and metaphoric use of images in his work that he hopes will prompt the viewer to perhaps question the intent of such a depiction, and ultimately the world around them.

Seth Graham’s visual art will be on view Wednesdays and Saturdays at artspace105 from May 1-15, 2010. An opening reception will be held starting at 6 p.m. on Saturday, May 1st.

For more information, including gallery hours, contact the Steel Valley Arts Council at steelvalleyarts@gmail.com.

The Academy of the South Side Fundraiser April 17 2010

On April 17th 2010, The Academy of the South Side is having our second Communion rent party/fundraiser, this time with more booze, more entertainment, and more parking! Doors open at 7pm, music around 8, and admission is free, with drinks available for a small suggested donation, up to $10 for a bottomless cup of beer or wine.

The Lineup:
Tracksploitation - the baddest DJs in Pittsburgh
Kirik Hava - Turkish band
Joanna and Kari of Sadiqa Belly Dancing
Paintings by The Academy

Detailed directions and parking information can be found at www.academyofthesouthside.com

We call the event "Communion", to play on our studio location in an old church building, and also to highlight the community of artists and supporters that call Pittsburgh home. We are hoping to make these parties a regular event to showcase exciting art and music created by talented Pittsburghers, so let's all come together to have some drinks, listen to good tunes, see some beautiful paintings, and support the arts.

The party will be at the old St. Michaels' girls school building at 44 Pius Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15203 in the South Side Slopes. It is our home base and also the Veronica's Veil Community Arts Center building, and they were generous enough to allow us to utilize the beautiful main ballroom floor for this event.

Please help us get the word out and tell your friends to come party for the arts!

Guest Curator Series Responding
April 16 – May 15, 2010
Opening Reception April16, 6-9pm
Pittsburgh, PA – April 2010
Curated by: Anna E. Mikolay

An exhibition of new works created by artists Rose Clancy, Vanessa
German, Maria Mangano, David Montano and David Pohl.

Have you ever had the experience of passing by a place where you are
drawn to it and then later find yourself thinking about it? Is it the
beauty, mystery, sadness and or history of it that causes you to
linger?
And if you had the opportunity to respond to this place what would you
do? How would you proceed?

Curator, Anna E. Mikolay asked five local artists these same questions
this past January. The exhibition, Responding, highlights the new
works created in response to these questions. Selected sites include
the block of an abandoned church, an urban intersection, a private
garden, a collapsed barn and a collection of postcards from the past.
Each artist responded differently to this challenge including creating
hidden shrines, photo documentations, sculptures, maps, dis-assembling
of materials and more.

Pastoral Deluxe, Elin Lennox Simultaneously familiar and disorienting, Lennox’s large abstract photographs evoke the traditions of abstract painting, the aesthetics of microscopic imaging, and Hubble space images. Shot on film, they are printed digitally after minimal color adjustment.

RECALL, Ben Hernstrom & Frank Ferraro This is a site-specific, immersive audio/video installation that explores the issue of how digital technology influences our experiences and memories. It features projected video with original audio composition, including found sound, field recordings and ambient music. Hernstrom, a filmmaker, and Ferraro, a multi-disciplinary artist have collaborated on this project.

Shifting Panoramas, Elizabeth Mooney Using a combination of painting and kinetic sculpture, the work in this exhibition addresses the accelerated state of human relationships to the world around them. Mooney’s work questions how we experience and observe nature through a conceptual visual language, by using both static and moving scenic landscapes.

Inisiaqpunga and the waking, Thea Augustina Eck This installation, which includes photography and sculpture, evokes the lonesome wandering in search of ghosts from an 1845 Arctic Expedition. In the Inuktitut language, “inisiaqpunga” describes the act of following a lone trail left by an occasional traveler. Employing the language of nautical flags, the artist examines the power of symbols to create distance or intimacy.

The Inherent Pull, James R. Southard In a nine-photograph series, Southard recreates his own understanding and memory of film noir. In those wonderful environments of post-war cinema, filled with darkness and small hints of light, sets and scenes tap into a basic understanding of human fears.
