Unblurred Art Galleries With Regular Hours, Pittsburgh Pa

Unblurred is great as far as a social happening and for highlighting urban renewal through the arts but it isn't always about the visual artist who is trying to promote people purchasing their work so they can continue making art in Pittsburgh. Artists who display at venues without regular hours or on site sales have a harder road ahead of them for the most part.

For people who are interested in supporting locally based visual artists who aren't able to make every first friday Unblurred on Penn Ave there are just a few sales oriented galleries who have hours:

ModernFormations
4919 Penn Avenue. Pittsburgh PA 15224 412.362.0274
Thursdays 7pm - 9pm
Saturdays 1pm - 4pm or by appointment

Pittsburgh Glass Center
5472 Penn Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA 15206 | 412-365-2145
Fri., Sat. & Sun. : 10 am – 4 pm
Tues., Wed. & Thurs. : 10 am – 7 pm
Closed Monday
(not always about locally based art sales but overall a great thing for pgh)

*Some of the other venues are by appointment so you can get in touch with them or the artists individually to see. Garfield art gallery list.

If you want to reach beyond Unblurred check out the Pittsburgh Artist Registry and my curated list of Pittsburgh Artists.

Fast Fwd Gallery: Pittsburgh has a great new gallery

Pittsburgh is lucky to have a new gallery in town by the name of Fast Fwd Gallery on 3700 Penn Ave in Bloomfield/Lawrenceville. The building is the former gallery of artist James Church then later painter Mark Gualtieri and more recently artist Thommy Conroy. The owners, Craig Freeman Smith and Joseph Materkowski, opened up last month to an opening crowd of more than 300 people! I missed that opening but checked out this past Friday's opening for Lots of Pulp, Works on Paper. The artists are from both Pittsburgh and NYC and it's an awesome exhibit. I met and spoke with co-owner Craig Smith and he said you can call/email to make an appt to check out the work if you miss Unblurred, first fridays of the month. Their phone number is 724.833.4537 and email addy is FastFwdArt(AT)gmail.com.

Check them out on facebook as well.

Friday December 5 2008

Unblurred art crawl happens the first Friday of every month (Jan. may be an exception) on Penn Ave in Garfield, Friendship, East Liberty etc.

The schedule is always here.

Of particular note are:

7PM-10PM MODERNFORMATIONS GALLERY & PERFORMANCE SPACE - 4919 PENN AVE.KATHRYN COLE: BITS AND PIECES OF A PLACE 2008 This exhibit features the work of the 2008 Grand Prize Winner of Modernformations Annual Spring Salon, Kathryn Cole. It is an investigation into the qualities of the city Kathryn has been calling home for the last year. The work will be a collection of found objects and materials re-assembled into her impressions of this new place. Trained as a metalsmith and jeweler at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond, VA, she is attracted to the unique qualities of the “Steel City”, a rugged beaten sort of beauty. Kathryn says: I spend hours roaming the streets looking for little metal cast-offs and bits to be reincarnated in my impressions of the city. As a metal smith, I feel a unique bond to this “Steel City”. Each little metal scrap I find seems to have so much more importance because of where I have found it. Whether is it a crushed can or a part fallen off a truck, all of these bits are part of what Pittsburgh is. Perhaps using parts of this city will help me define it…www.modernformations.com 412-362-0274.

and
7PM-10PM THE CLAY PENN - 5111 PENN AVE. ANNUAL HOLIDAY EXTRAVAGANZA Exhibition featuring a variety of local and national artists. Please join us for wonderful art, gift ideas and holiday cheer. For more information please contact 412 951-6133, ljmclay@hotmail.com or laurajeanmclaughlin.com.

Clay Penn is not open every month so be sure to check in at the studio and gallery of the nationally known and amazing Artist Laura Jean McLaughlin.
