Bokse Art at Box Heart Gallery March 4 - March 29, 2008 Pittsburgh Art

Bokse Art at Box Heart Gallery March 4 - March 29, 2008

Paintings by Steve Boksenbaum. Recognizable imagery is merely a template for play with the media Boksenbaum uses. He gathers images photographically, which removes them one step from reality and into the timeless two dimensional realm. From there, Boksenbaum reconstructs them as broad geometric areas and works in layers of paint, each layer refining the areas and complementing the colors.

Also featuring ceramics by Michael Smithhammer. In carving the surface of the clay, Smithhammer is attempting to take responsibility for every atom of the form, reconfiguring the energy of the materials' surface. He then colors it in a way that appears completely natural, as if it was simply found that way. In a Buddhist sutra there is a line that states, "The body is the shadow of the soul." While savoring this concept, Smithhammer sensed a connection to what he imagines can happen for those who experience his work. A shadow is an image created by the blocking of light. It has no dimension. So when we truly see or experience what our soul really is, it will astound us with it's infinite beauty.
Public Reception: Saturday, March 8th 5 pm - 8 pmFree and open to the public.

Zombo Gallery Presents Exhibit by Nathan Mazur opening March 14th, 2008, Pittsburgh Lawrenceville Art

Zombo Gallery Presents Exhibit by Nathan Mazur. Zombo Gallery, Pittsburgh’s home for hip lowbrow art, announces the first solo exhibit by local artist Nathan Mazur; Wee Beasties: Miniature Paintings of Nature’s Tiniest Denizens, opening March 14th, 2008.
Wee Beasties is an exhibit of over 3-dozen miniature paintings (2” by 2.75”) of insects, worms, and other creepy crawlies. They depict everything from the common cockroach, to the cryptic water bear, all in the artist’s seemingly innocent, saccharine-colored, cartoon style.
While browsing through an art supply store, local cartoonist and animator, Nathan Mazur, came upon some tiny canvases about the size of a Zippo lighter. Though meant as a novelty item, he purchased a few and used them to paint cartoony, life-sized pictures of bugs. After casually mentioning the pint-sized portraits to local artist, Wayno, Nathan Mazur was introduced to Michael Devine, owner of the Zombo Gallery in Lawrenceville. Since opening the previous summer, the Zombo Gallery has built a reputation for exhibiting the cool, kitschy and the strange… the perfect fit for the artist’s skewed invertebrate subjects.
Nathan Mazur is a cartoonist and animator from western PA. His work has been described as everything from cute and funny, to somewhat unnerving. His clients include American Greetings, Carnegie Mellon University, Disney Television as well as other smaller companies, independent filmmakers, and private commissions. He is a member of the Pittsburgh Society of Illustrators and serves on the advisory board for The Toonseum, Pittsburgh’s museum of cartoon art. To find out more about Nathan Mazur’s work, please visit http://www.scaredofbees.com/.
Wee Beasties runs from March 14th through April 5th, 2008 at the Zombo Gallery, located at 4900 Hatfield St. in Lawrenceville. The gallery hours are Fridays, 5pm-7:30pm. Additional hours by appointment. For more information on Zombo Gallery, please call 412-904-3703.

Public Art Plan needed for the new Penguins Arena! Art Consultants wanted. Office of Public Art and GPAC Pittsburgh

The Office of Public Art would like to inform you of the following opportunity.... The Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA), City of Pittsburgh (City), Sports & Exhibition Authority (SEA) and the Pittsburgh Penguins (Developer) are seeking a consultant or consultant team to create a public art plan for the Pittsburgh Arena which focuses on the exterior of the building and the surrounding site. The art plan should provide for projects that depict the history, present and future of Pittsburgh, the Hill District, Uptown and the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Thirty Thousand Dollars ($30,000) is available for this project including all expenses and travel.
The competition is open to established professional consultants or consultant teams working within the United States. Students are not eligible to apply.

Dr Sketchy at Brew House Friday March 14 2008 Pies, Pirates and Piraro! Pi Day

Pies, Pirates and Piraro! Dr. Sketchy’s Anti-Art School Pittsburgh goes Bizarro at the Brew House. On March 14th, 8;00 PM, Dr. Sketchy’s Anti-Art School Pittsburgh will celebrate Pi Day (3.14) with nationally acclaimed creator of the comic Bizarro, and Pie aficionado, Dan Piraro.
Dan will be emceeing the lively burlesque life drawing session with his own unique brand of comedy and cartoons. Dr. Sketchy will pay tribute to Dan’s iconic use of pies in his comic by celebrating “Pi Day” with Pies, Pirates and Piraro! This is his first time hosting a Dr. Sketchy event anywhere!
When many artists think "life drawing," they think of sterile rooms, bad lighting, and bored, silent, models with nary a hint of personality. Dr. Sketchy’s Anti Art School has changed all that. Dr. Sketchy’s models will don pirate garb, as cartoonists, illustrators, painters and artist of all kinds sketch, drink, and play outrageous games befitting Dr. Sketchy’s irreverent atmosphere.

Started in 2005 by artist and burlesque dancer Molly Crabapple, Dr. Sketchy’s Anti-Art School is the little New York art event that became a movement.
The themed sketch sessions have drawn an eclectic group of artists and models of all disciplines, shapes, sizes and breeds.
Dr. Sketchy past themes have included Gypsy Tramp’s and Thieves, Space Age Bachelor Pad, and “Love and Hate”.

Dan will be acting as emcee as well as performing at the event. He will also be signing copies of his latest book, “Bizarro and Other Strange Manifestations of the Art of Dan Piraro." Bizarro appears in 250 markets worldwide.
Modeling at Dr. Sketchy for the March event, official spokesmodel Miss Ashley Stone, Derby Demons: La Diabla and Damage Dahl, and Sketchy regular Lauren Toohey. There will also be a very special performance by renowned Burlesque artiste Paige Turner and her seductive Pie Dance!
This project supported in part by a Seed Award from the Sprout Fund.
Dr. Sketchy’s will happen Friday March 14th, 8:00pm at the Brew House, 2100 Mary Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15203
Suggested donation of $10 benefits the ToonSeum Gallery. A Pittsburgh museum gallery dedicated to the cartoon arts.
Artists must be over 18 to attend Dr. Sketchy. Vegan snacks and liquid inspiration will be provided for those over 21 for a small donation. Artist should bring pencils, pens, sketch pads and other art implements.
Reservations highly recommended for this special event.

to Artists about Agora Gallery in Chelsea NYC Contests, Juried Competitions, Costs, Vanity Galleries

in case you've come across this info from a newsletter and to have all the info on Agora Gallery and all the facts in general...

New York, NY + 23rd Annual Juried Competition Agora Gallery of New York City is pleased to announce its 23rd juried competition. Awards valued at Thirty Eight Thousand dollars ($38,000) will be distributed as follows: exhibition at the Chelsea gallery, cash awards, Internet exposure and publicity in ARTisSpectrum magazine. The exhibition will take place in Chelsea, New York City. The gallery/artist split will be 50/50. In the spirit of giving, Agora Gallery will split its share of artwork sales resulting from the competition exhibition with Art Start, an innovative program that brings art and artists to homeless children. Deadline: March 7, 2008Information: http://www.agora-gallery.com/2008

seems fine until you contact them and find out that in order to compete in any of their other competitions you need to apply to be represented by them, in which they quoted to me whopping $2950.00 fee.

agora is saying though for the 23rd annual juried competition that representation is not required... (meaning that is the one exception)

You do not have to be represented by the gallery in order to participate in the competition. Anyone, 18 years and older, is eligible for the competition. There is a small submission fee ($35 for an online submission and $50 if you mail in your submission) but you do not have to be a represented artist. If your artwork is selected for exhibition, the only costs you will have then will be to ship your artwork to the gallery for the exhibition.

For more information please visit:
http://www.agora-gallery.com/competition/2008/default.aspx

here's a summary of what I've posted before about them when they contacted me about submitting for 'Tripping the Light Fantastic: The Fine Art Photography Exhibition' exhibition:

I received an email from an Agora Gallery assistant complimenting me on my website and specific images and that I would be a good addition to 'Tripping the Light Fantastic: The Fine Art Photography Exhibition' exhibition, a juried show run by the gallery director. I emailed back asking if I could just apply to the juried show and they said I would have to apply for gallery representation which would cost $2,950. I emailed a few photographers who have been represented by Agora and one answered back saying don't expect to sell anything, it's good for having an nyc show on your resume. That's crazy. How many emerging artists have $2950 to make themselves looke better on paper? More specific info from the email is below the following sentence...

They also wanted me to add their website link to their site, one where they had over 1300 photography websites listed. I decided against that given the nature of what they really want and stand for.

Thank you for your interest in Agora Gallery, established 1984 by a fine artist seeking to promote her work as well as the work of fellow artists. Agora Gallery is located in the hub of the Chelsea art district, 530 West 25th street , between 11th and 12th avenues. Please feel free to come and visit. Gallery hours Tues – Sat, 11am – 6pm.
All artists who are represented by Agora pay a fee for the advertising and promotion that we provide.
The basic representation cost is $2,950 which includes participation in a collective exhibition, promotion on two of our websites, a press release written by an art critique, inclusion in the exhibition catalog, personalized PR efforts, group invitation cards, ads and listings in New York publications.
Framing and shipping costs are not included in this fee and they will depend on the number of artwork that you will exhibit which will vary according to the level of representation that you select
Not all New York galleries charge a fee for representation, however many do.

Please visit http://www.agora-gallery.com/GalleryInfo/NYCGalleries.aspx to learn more about how NYC galleries work with artists. The commission structure on the sale of art is 70% for the artist and 30% for the gallery. We can not and do not guarantee that your work will sell and we suggest that you treat with caution anyone who promises that your work will sell.

I would personally avoid them at all costs! Rick Byerly
