Sprout Fund Hot House Event Saturday, August 23, 2008

The Sprout Fund will host its sixth annual Hothouse event on Saturday, August 23, 2008 on the upper floors of The Union Trust Building in Downtown Pittsburgh.

Doors open at 7pm for VIP ticket holders and 9pm for all others.

Buy your tickets today! Volunteer registration now available!

About Hothouse

Hothouse is The Sprout Fund’s annual benefit and showcase event. The event serves as a stage to present a sampling of some of the innovative projects and emerging leaders of successful community initiatives supported by Sprout over the past year. Held annually at unique development sites, the event celebrates the organization’s accomplishments and features live music and performances, food and drink by Pittsburgh favorites, a silent auction, and a VIP reception.
As The Sprout Fund’s “live annual report” to the community, the event creates an incredible opportunity for the wide cross-section of Pittsburgh’s business and social circles that come together each year in support of Sprout’s mission to meet and mingle. The event has been lauded previously as one of the top 5 parties of the year by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and the city’s “top fundraiser” by the Pittsburgh City Paper. The event attracted more than 2,000 attendees in 2006 and 2007.

Support for the event has been strong every year; last year 37 financial sponsors, 4 media sponsors, 40 in-kind supporters, 36 food & drink sponsors, and 75 silent auction donors joined hundreds of friends of the organization to raise more than $100,000 for The Sprout Fund....

Pittsburgh Theater Theatre Directory Updated

Updated here: http://www.pghgalleries.com/PittsburghTheaters.htm

The New Olde Bank Theatre 722 Allegheny River Boulevard Verona, PA 15147 412.251.7904
http://www.newobt.com/

This is not a new theatre, just one I didn't have in the directory ( any help is welcome updating the listings!
....

The Olde Bank Theatre was established in the fall of 1999. Originally housed in a former bank building located in the Natrona section of Harrison Township, The Olde Bank Theatre produced over thirty shows. Its mission was to provide a creative outlet for intelligent and thought-provoking live theatrical pieces, both established works of yesterday and new works of today. To that end, The OBT—as it was known—embraced a hodgepodge of genres: everything from comedy to drama, Shakespeare to Chekhov, musical revues to holiday favorites, and new works to children’s theatre. The company’s founding Artistic Directors, Sean Michael O’Donnell and Todd Collar, closed the theatre’s doors in October 2003. After a five-year hiatus, The OBT has been resurrected, and while its location and name may have changed, its fundamental mission remains the same.

Pittsburgh Art Event Guide August 1, 2 2008

There are enough compelling Pittsburgh art events to cause some juggling this weekend! Thursday from 7-10 pm is the AAP Annual at the Warhol opening and Friday we have 3 major events: unblurred in garfield and bloomfield (most galleries start at 7pm, some 6pm so see schedule), mendelson's salon des refuse along with the other galleries in shadyside which make up the first friday crawl (5-9 pm), and fumino hora at the pittsburgh filmmakers galleries (5:30-8pm) .

and Saturday there's
arty party which runs from noon til dusk and a Lawrenceville Community Art Day from 1-3pm.

I'll be attending Unblurred on Friday and the first stretch of Arty Party on Sat for sure and will hopefully motivate earlier and check out Mendelson and Pgh Filmmakers as well. It's all possible from a timing standpoint (given there's a vehicle of some sort).

A current schedule for the Unblurred Art Crawl can always be found here.

Logically you could check out Shadyside then Pgh Filmmakers and then Unblurred but that assumes a lot!

Be sure to check the links above for all the info.

Update: Serendipity has a run down here.

Doppel Ganger by Fumino Hora August 1, 2008, Filmmakers Galleries

Filmmakers Galleries will present a new site-specific photography installation, Doppel Ganger by Fumino Hora, on view from August 1 through September 14, 2008.
An opening reception will be held on Friday, August 1 from 5:30 - 8:00pm. It is free and open to the public.
The installation consists of photographic transfers on fabric and paper, digital prints, laser-cuts, etchings and sculpture. Hora feels that the costume acts as an inquiry into the identity or existence of the “doppel ganger,” a German term for second self, or ghostly double. Transparency and emptiness are important elements of this identity, echoing its invisible nature. While many understand this concept as a kind of psychological alter ego, Hora says an additional interpretation is more of a spiritual one. In her native country of Japan, it’s believed that “spirits possess extraordinary power,” she explains. “Their existence is beyond the tangible world.” For more about Fumino Hora, visit fuminoart.com

Summer gallery hours, through August 24:Sun 12-5, Mon thru Thurs 12-7, Fri 12-6, Sat 12-5.

Gist Street Reading Series Friday August 1, 2008

Dear Gist Street,

Already, it's time for another reading. We're still recovering from the cookout, but THIS Friday August 1, 2008 we have Rusty Barnes (fiction) and John Rybicki (poetry). www.giststreet.org for bios. It will be amazing.

James Simon's Sculpture Studio, 305 Gist Street-Uptown

Doors open at 7:15; readings begin at 8pm $5 at the door. There's a raffle with books, produce, and other unlikely stuff. We'll have the reading outside in the backyard if it's nice. BYOB. No grilling this month, but feel free to bring food. I'm making a plum pie and a blackberry tart. Hope to see you there!

Sherrie

This project was supported by Pennsylvania Partners in the Arts (PA Partners), the regional arts funding partnership of the Pennsylvania Council onthe Arts, a state agency. State government funding comes through an annual appropriation by Pennsylvania's General Assembly and from the NationalEndowment for the Arts, a federal agency. PA Partners is administered in Allegheny County by the Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council.--

Zombo Gallery Art Show August 15, 2008 Sideshow Freakshow Who Knows Show

Lucky the Painproofman presents Dr. Josef Furdek's Cabinet of Curiousities at Zombo Gallery. I checked with Michael to when the Aug 15 openinbg would go til time-wise and he said around 11pm but don't wait too late! (Reposting as a reminder)

Receptions at 6pm on Friday, August 15th, 2008 and on Saturday, August 30th, 2008 at 6pm.

Zombo Gallery 4900 Hatfield Street Pittsburgh, PA 15201 Ph, 412-904-3703

From Michael at Zombo Gallery:

Hey All. Things have gotten overtly strange at Zombo Gallery. After Wayno's Fantastic Anniversary show, I was hoping to take pretty much the month of August off to just kind to give the gallery a little rest. But was confronted by a nearly manic, but charming sort of a character who would only refer to himself as "Lucky, The Painproof Man". He seemed to be a throwback to the world of "Carnies", Sideshows, Freakshows, and the like. He cornered me at my gallery and gave me a spiel I could hardly resist. He asked for use of the gallery from August 15th -30th to display an array of oddities and artifacts that he claims has never seen the light of day. He suggested to temporarily "convert" the gallery to an Artshow/Freakshow/Sideshow.

I was skeptical to say the least, but after he made a convincing presentation complete with diagrams, layouts, photos and upfront financial compensation, I was sold.In all honesty, I still fail to believe that even half of what he promised will actually be or take place at my gallery, but I really don't have anything to loose. Neither do you. I hope you can show up and witness this "not for the weak" exhibition. I know I am curious...and hope you are as well.

I have included the information from his latest correspondence to me

...See you there

Michael Devine Zombo Gallery 4900 Hatfield Street Pittsburgh, PA 15201 Ph, 412-904-3703 http://www.zomboworld.com/

....
Hello Sir: I would like the gallery to open promptly at 6pm on Friday, August 15th and on Saturday, August 30th at 6pm. Please allow me to set up beginning 11:30pm on Thursday, August 14th and as per our past agreements you will NOT allow me to be disturbed.

Here is the current list for my presentation of Dr. Josef Furdek's Cabinet of Curiousities

THE CREATURE (believed to be a Chupacabra)
Coinjoined Fetus
Shrunken Heads
Vampire Hunting Kits
The Mummy of a Demon Boy
Stereo cards
Crystal Skulls
Bigfoot's Toe
Banner Lines
Knockdown Punks
Carnival Games

much much more

a perfomance by The Notorious Lucky the Painproof Man

The exhibition will transport the viewer to a forgotten time where the odd and unexplained would still shock and amaze.

The advent of modern medicine has had a devistating effect of the American Sideshow. "Freaks" have all but disapepared from the modern stage, relegated to impoverished third world countries where one may still find Siamese twins, or a half man. Television, movies, the internet and the widespread availability of information has desensitized us and taken the mystique out of the unknown. Human rights campaigns now longer allow the display of medical oddities for profit. Medical miracles correct birth defects daily, and are becoming more and more effective.

There was something magical about the American Sideshow, something that made the people want to spend a dime for the chance to see something out of the ordinary, when a dime was worth something. This work is pure Fluxist. It lies not within the physical manifestation of the sideshow itself, but rather the experience that the viewer takes away with them, and the story they tell others of what they've seen. Professor Josef's Cabinet of Curiosities is a chance for people to experience something that will soon disappear from existence.

Sincerely,

Lucky, the Painproofman

Co-presented by the New Hazlett Theater and the Pittsburgh Creativity Project Thursday, July 31, 5:30-8:30 pm - register now New Hazlett Theater, 6 Allegheny Square, Northside

How do artists and other creative entities use the Internet effectively and efficiently? Modernformations Gallery: Signs of Survival August 1,2008

Modernformations Gallery and Performance Space Presents
"SIGNS OF SURVIVAL: THE ART OF LIVING AFTER TRAUMA"
Opening Reception
Friday August 1, 2008
7 to 10pm

Most of us have been affected by trauma personally or through the experience of a loved one, friend or coworker. We survive terrorism, abusive family environments, poverty, rape, environmental decay, military service inactive war zones, extreme health challenges, child abuse, and many other traumatic experiences.

This exhibit honors our survival, our journey after the trauma has occurred, and our inherent worth and dignity. It asks: How do we as individuals, family units, and communities survive traumatic events? How do we process our experience of trauma? How do we heal and build thriving relationships and lives after trauma?

Trauma survival has the power to unify us and provide common ground for communicating, healing, and planning our future. Come and join the dialogue with many artists who answer these questions in unique and powerful ways.

Experience their healing processes and lives after surviving traumatic events.

Exhibit runs to Saturday, August 30th. Closing reception from 1-4pm
ModernFormations Gallery and Performance Space 4919 Penn Avenue, Pittsburgh PA. 15224 412-362-0274 www.modernformations.com Gallery hours: Thursday 6-9pm, Saturday 1-4pm, by appointment...

Pittsburgh Glass Artists! Where are You?

Last week I was looking for glass artists interested in having their work on consignment at an artist owned jewelry store which gets great traffic and I didn't find any listed at http://www.pittsburghartistregistry.org/ . That is the frequently used and most important Pittsburgh Artist Registry run by GPAC, the Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council. Please pass the word on to Pittsburgh Glass Artists!

Update: The glass arts category was recently added to the registry site so artists who are already registered there and who work in glass should update their profiles.

First Friday Art Walk Salon des Refuse Mendelson, Ellsworth Ave Shadyside

First Friday Art Walk on Ellsworth Ave in Shadyside Every First Friday of the month from 5-9pm

Friday August 1st, 2008 will feature Salon des Refuse. Salon des Refuse is an annual art event where Mendelson Gallery owner Steve chooses work which has been rejected by the juror of the Associated Artists of Pittsburgh Annual exhibit. I saw most of the pieces chosen by Steve Mendelson during the AAP screening and it looks like it will be a great exhibit ( no surprise there!).

Keep an eye out for David Edward's new sculpture titled "Social Climber". The Mendelson Gallery is located at 5874 Ellsworth Avenue in the Shadyside area of Pittsburgh. The exhibition, titled "Salon des Refuse" opens August 1, 2008 and runs through the month. The August 1 opening coordinates with The First Friday Event and festivities on Ellsworth Ave.

The First Friday Art Walk also includes Gallerie Chis, Bella Arte, Gallery in the Square, Morgan Contemporary Glass, and Wax Jewelry Design.

Ninety Eighth Annual AAP Exhibition @ Warhol August 1-Sept 14, 2008

Ninety Eighth Annual Exhibition

Some of the finest work of Pittsburgh regional artists will be on display at The Andy Warhol Museum beginning August 1, 2008 and running through September 14, 2008, as the Associated Artists of Pittsburgh (AAP) presents its 98th Annual Exhibition. An introductory reception, free and open to the public, will be on view at the museum from 7:00-10:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 31st.

The 98th AAP Annual Exhibition was juried by John Carson, the Regina and Marlin Miller Head of the School of Art at Carnegie Mellon University. He noted that, "Selecting this show represented an enormous challenge with so many high-quality pieces to choose from. The strength and depth in the overall submission made my job both enjoyable and extremely difficult."

AAP 98th Annual Exhibition co-chairs Penny Mateer and Kitty Spangler said that 481 pieces of art were submitted for this year's show representing the work of 261 artists. Carson selected 77 works by 74 artists for the exhibition.

The art submitted represented a wide range of mediums including oil, watercolor, sculpture, mixed media, photography, video and quilting, among others. The work selected represents a cross-section of those media.
" I was greatly impressed by the evidence of such a vibrant artistic community in the Pittsburgh area and how that speaks of the creative impulse which drives the making of art and how important that is for all of us," noted Carson.

The AAP Annual, which has been presented every year since 1910, is the second-longest running annual exhibition in the United States. The first Annual was affectionately titled, "The Popular Salon of the People" because of the support and encouragement the member artists received from the Pittsburgh community. Exhibiting artists have included Mary Cassatt, Andy Warhol, John Kane, Philip Pearlstein and Malcolm Parcell, among many others.

The Associated Artists of Pittsburgh is the oldest and largest nonprofit, visual arts organization in the Pittsburgh region, and its membership includes more than 500 artists who live within a 150-mile radius of Pittsburgh. Creators of all media of the visual arts, its members include sculptors, painters, graphic designers, illustrators, ceramic and installation and new media artists.

Located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, the place of Andy Warhol's birth, The Warhol is one of the most comprehensive single-artist museums in the world. The Andy Warhol Museum is one of the four Carnegie Museums of Pittsburgh. Located at 117 Sandusky Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15212, The Warhol is open Tuesday-Sunday from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. and Friday nights until 10 p.m. It is closed on Mondays and legal holidays. Entry is free for Carnegie Museum of Pittsburgh members, $15 for adults, $9 for seniors and $8 for students and children.

SPECIAL NOTE: At 1 p.m. on Sunday, August 3rd juror John Carson will host a "walk and talk" session to tour the exhibition, discuss his selections and answer questions. There will be no cost for participation, but attendees will be required to pay entrance to the museum.

Pittsburgh Artist Update, Ben Kehoe, Masha Vereshchenko

I suggest keeping an eye on Ben Kehoe's Flickr pages as he begins to show his post-medieval period of work which I can't wait to see! He mentioned that the flickr pages will be the most up to date (both agreeing websites are a pain to mantain, but be sure to check his out ).

You may have seen work by artist Masha Vereshchenko around town. Her links are here:
http://www.myspace.com/vereshchenkomasha
http://www.spraygraphic.com/ManageProfile/5312.html
I look forward to seeing more of her art!

When you see or hear the phrase "Wolfman's Got Nards" do you draw blank? Edumacate yourself and pick up an amazing handcrafted work of new monster illustrations and great writing from Unicorn Mountain as well as their other anthologies.

On a final note a late farewell to Jairan Sadeghi who has left Pittsburgh and to point out the Pittsburgh art galleries who really got her started in terms of showing her amazing talent to Pittsburgh. ModernFormations Gallery in Garfield and La Vie Gallery in Lawrenceville stand out in the talent they exhibit. These are galleries which need the support of art fans in terms of purchasing art to continue supporting new work. For those in the know running a Pittsburgh art gallery involves a ton of work and an uncertain future.
