November 7 & 8, 2008 Carnegie Mellon Campus, Pittsburgh, PA Society for Photographic Education Mid-Atlantic Regional Photo Conference

Technocracy: image production/distribution/consumption Techno-lust vs. Technophobia

In this age of postproduction, how do imagemakers and institutions respond to this shifting landscape, creating alternative models for exhibition and education? How do those involved in the making, exhibiting and selling of images respond to the eradication of the boundary between production and consumption? How does imaging technology (camera phones, webcams, photo and video blogs) affect our capacity as imagemakers to navigate through the cultural chaos extracting new forms of production a.k.a art? Or does the proliferation of technology yield a return to traditional modes of production?

Keynote Speaker Douglas Fogle, curator of The Carnegie International.

Panel Discussion with Rhizome, Eyebeam and Perpetual Art Machine moderated by Thomas Sokolowski, Director for the Andy Warhol Museum.

Filmmakers Galleries will present a new installation, The Great Depression, by filmmaker and photographer Bill Daniel, on view from October 24, 2008 through January 10, 2009. The opening reception is Friday, October 24 from 7:00 – 9:30pm. It is free and open to the public.

With projected video, large-scale still photography and several interactive installations Daniel will transform the gallery space into a scene from a post-apocalyptic movie, complete with hobo shack. "It is an imaginary survival scene after an imaginary collapse," Daniel says.

In addition to the opening event on Oct 24, there will be a multi-projector performance and music event on Dec. 6, and a closing screening event on Jan 10. This installation coincides with the 2008 Three Rivers Film Festival, where Daniel's film, Who is Bozo Texino? about hobo and rail boxcar graffiti, will be screened with Craig Baldwin's film, Mock Up on Mu on Nov. 21. (Daniel is the cinematographer for Mock Up On Mu.)

The show is a continuation of Daniel's on-going Sunset Scavenger project and his interest in wrecked landscapes and improvised homes inhabited by boat squatters, freight train tramps, desert rats, swap meet guitar players, and other homeless Americans. A wide variety of locations have served as venues for Daniel's film and installation work, from urban rooftops and abandoned drive-in movie theaters to Anthology Film Archives and the Independent Film Channel.

Daniel was born in Houston, Texas and has lived and worked in Austin, New York, San Francisco, and Portland. Daniel has collaborated with several artists from the Bay Area Mission School art movement, notably Margaret Kilgallen, and has worked on multiple projects with underground director Craig Baldwin. He has received numerous awards including grants from the Film Arts Foundation, Creative Capital, the R&B Feber Charitable Foundation for the Beaux Arts and a variety of artist residencies. His films have been shown at numerous film festivals including the prestigious Vienna International Film Festival, The Portland Art Museum's Northwest Film and Video Festival.

Gallery hours are Monday – Friday: 12-5 pm, Sat-Sun: 10-2pm and during Melwood Screening Room shows.

The Encyclopedia Destructica Studios is where the E.D. zines are printed & bound in weekly public binding parties. Open houses occur regularly during Lawrenceville's Final Fridays. The studios also host Destructica release parties, art exhibitions, and in the future will host a Destructica residency program & Lecture Series.Encyclopedia Destructica is an art-zine inspired from the need to explore and export contemporary arts/culture in a way that’s accessible and easy to engage. These hand-bound issues provide a forum for a primordial dialogue between artists, harvesting themes from sketchbooks and journals. Encyclopedia Destructica hopes to create a community wide awareness of developing work by local artists and writers through the public forum of a zine and the intimate experience of a book. Created and distributed in a DIY fashion, Encyclopedia Destructica promotes this attitude as well as providing support and resources for local artists to create their own book/zine projects.
