Presented by Pittsburgh Filmmakers and Pittsburgh Center for the Arts
from Rob Long http://www.pittsburgharts.org/gallery_shows/mem_show07.htmlThis 2007 Pittsburgh Filmmakers/Pittsburgh Center for the Arts Members Show is the first exhibition of works by the collective artist members since the two organizations combined and consolidated their operations in 2006. As a practicing artist in Pittsburgh, I believe that this creative merger has resulted in a stronger organization that is uniquely positioned to better serve the diverse community of artists in the region and present challenging and relevant work to the public. Beyond its role as an incubator for visual arts education and advancement, PF/PCA is a vital platform for regional artists to connect with a broad audience.
I was pleased to collaborate with Laura Domencic, Director of Pittsburgh Center for the Arts, and George Davis, Curator of the Center’s and Filmmakers’ galleries, in selecting the works for the exhibition from the artist members’ submissions.
The occasion of this exhibition affords the viewer an opportunity to experience new works that represent a cross-section of traditional and new media – painting and sculpture alongside photography and video, and more. This collection of work combines a diversity of styles, creative practices, approaches, experiences, and points of view that comprise the contemporary visual currents within the organization’s artist membership. Work by emerging and established artists has been brought together, creating an environment where each can learn from the other. The resulting combination of artists has the potential to stimulate a dialogue, enhance the fabric of our creative community, and build upon Pittsburgh’s vibrant cultural network.
The show is an unpredictable mélange. The interplay between the visual and conceptual themes explored by each artist enhances the cumulative effect of the collected works – the sum of the individual parts.
Here, digital technology holds open the door for its analog ancestors. Refined and practiced technique complements an experimental process. Memories of the past and visions of the future vie for our attention. Saturated color and rich black and white describe scenes of fantasy and mystery, nature and humanity. Clever juxtapositions of elements and materials, issues and events, demonstrate concern and clarity.
Frame by frame, the PF/PCA Members Show is characterized by the responsive attention of the artists to their own creative voices and to the world around us.
