Help Restore the Randyland Map on the North Side, Kickstarter Campain Til July 22, 2014
Randy Gilson is a great person who has done a tremendous amount to beautify the North Side for over 18 years! Help him renovate the North Side map on the Randyland Building!
This year, I'd like to focus on refreshing and restoring the map of
the Northside on the Jacksonia Street face of the Randyland yellow
building.
This is one of the main attractions of the building and it has become
outdated and has been worn down and beaten by the weather. Many of the
labels have faded or peeled off. Much of the paint has worn off and many
other pieces and markers have been lost.

City of Pittsburgh Bureau of Building Inspection Threatens Lawsuit to Remove Lawrenceville Urban Garden Fence
This happened specifically in Lawrenceville at the corner of 52nd St and Holmes across from the 52nd Street Market. It appears that the Bureau of Building Inspection received "enough" resident complaints that the inspector cited "aesthetic" reasons and no other code violation along with a possible lawsuit if the pallets were not removed. My call is that "they" didn't want to deal with the complaints any more.
One of the complaints was a resident who called in and complained about a strong manure smell but none was ever used. It turned out to be a neighbor who let their garbage go rancid.
People are encouraged to complain via 311.
Note: The owner of the lot was not involved in the construction of the pallet garden. The above photo was taken in the middle of deconstruction and as of now the lot has been cleared.

Future Tenant
and Tree Pittsburgh announce a call for artists for work to be
presented at Arbor Aid 2013 to be
held at Future Tenant from Saturday November 2 to Sunday December 1, 2013 –
with the opening night Arbor Aid celebration on Saturday, November 2nd.
The exhibition
will be part of Tree Pittsburgh’s activities related to the 2013 Arbor Day
Foundation Partners in Community Forestry National Conference.
We are looking
for artwork that is made out of, or relates to, reclaimed urban wood. The call
is open to all artistic disciplines.
Submission
requirements
“Reclaimed urban
wood” can come from downed or removed trees, from fixtures, flooring, beams,
etc of once-occupied homes or from other urban reclaimed sources.
Each artist can
submit at least one and at most 3 pieces for consideration. Due to space
constraints; we recommend that the work does not exceed 9 x 9 feet and for
installation purposes, all pieces should be able to fit thru a 6'7"(h) door.
In addition, artists
are encouraged to submit one piece that would fit inside a 12 x 12 inch box.
Selected artists
will be able to put their work for sale, with a 20% sale commission for Future
Tenant. Artists can choose to donate another portion of the sale to Tree
Pittsburgh.

-Artist Bio
-Complete piece
information (author, title, medium, size, approximate weight and year)
-At least 1
image of each work, in case of three dimensional pieces we recommend at least
two images per piece.
-Brief
description of each project/piece
- If available a photo of and story behind the
raw material (where did the tree stand, where did you find the floor
boards,etc.)
A jury comprised
of recognized artists/woodworkers and community members will select the
participating projects. Artists are responsible for delivery and pick up within
the established time frames.

the Urban Tree Forge. Arbor Aid celebrates the possibilities presented
to us by trees as resources within our city. Rather than make mulch or firewood
from urban trees that need to be removed, Tree Pittsburgh encourages giving
them a longer life by repurposing them as art, furniture, flooring and
everything in between.
Arbor Aid is a
one-evening event and has historically enjoyed an audience of over 500 people.
Art is available for purchase at the event, and attendees enjoy live music,
food, and libation. With the inception of its annual fundraiser, Arbor Aid,
Tree Pittsburgh has developed an opportunity for artists and craftsman to
showcase their talents and the beauty of reclaimed wood by re-purposing urban
waste wood into art and fine craft for the past five years.

Pittsburgh Galleries Updated With Notes on Closings
I have been remiss as far as updating PghGalleries.com over the year but I spent a few hours combing through the files and removed quite a few galleries which have either closed or are closing soon. The list includes Michael Berger Gallery, Fein Art Gallery, Fe Gallery among others. For those that don't know keeping a gallery afloat can be next to impossible without other revenue such as framing or other related retail sales so it's no surprise that more are closing. The traditional gallery model has largely been absent from Pittsburgh for quite some time or arguably never really existed here. Many venues in Pittsburgh, like the majority on Penn Avenue in Garfield, don't even have regular hours so that further complicates the goal of artists selling their work.
I wouldn't be surprised to see more hybrid stores like Wildcard in Lawrenceville where they sell craft products along with visual art on the walls or some adaptation on that with a possible flat file system where a larger array of art could be marketed to people. There will most likely always a be a handful of successful art galleries in Pittsburgh due to framing needs and other sales but it will never show the variety and depth of visual art here. And neither will art crawls or similar events with the regular presenters. I believe entrepreneurs on multiple levels will take Pittsburgh art to the next level with the right support.
Pittsburgh as a whole needs to look at how larger cities support their artists. Think of what the URA could do as far as allocating larger properties for artist studios to show their work instead of making The Buncher Company richer. Cities like Minneapolis and beyond have large factory buildings allocated for studios where customers can come by and see the work they want to purchase. Pittsburgh claims it is a city for artists but when it comes to visual artists the proof is just not there yet.

Artist Seth Leibowitz: Talent and Tenacity
Tattoo Artist Seth Leibowitz recently broke his right wrist which has put his business on hold for 16 weeks so he decided to try out oil painting with his
left. Amazingly it didn't take long to get to the point where he is now
auctioning off talented portraiture work which will appeal to Pens fans out there. The auctions start today, June 4, so head over to Artform on Facebook to check them out.

Dear Pittsburgh: This Mayoral Race Should Be About Policies and Vision
It's maddening to see people already lining up for candidates who don't even have their policies published. This reminds of so many elections where it's the guy and not the specific policies and vision. And the personal comments belittling the other candidates are surfacing once again, showing how small-minded people can be. And that yeah, I really like that guy, he's one of us nonsense. And yes, I'm talking about Jack Wagner. It's been more than 30 days since Luke's announcement and his website has nothing as far as specific policies. That's a really bad sign and to me it signifies how little things like policy mean to him and Pittsburgh. He's our guy, he's been in Harrisburg for a while. That's great but I prefer candidates who take me seriously and publish their policies and vision well in advance of the primary and Bill Peduto has done this.
People that vote primarily based on the personality of the candidate stop progress. Literally. I'd also like to point out the wisdom which comes from the independent candidate Daniel Lynch which every person in the region should read and contemplate. I can't think of something more important than an outside perspective and one that is not steeped in bureaucratic thinking, especially for Pittsburgh.
P.S. The other candidates don't even have a website! It's 2013. Don't ask people to vote for you if you don't have a website.

Voter Registration Deadline for Pittsburgh Primary is April 22, 2013
The mayoral primary, May 21, 2013, will ultimately be the deciding vote for Pittsburgh's next mayor. And because we live in a highly regressive state known as the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania that means only registered Democrats will have a determining voice in who the next mayor will be. I have sent in a change of party status temporarily so I can vote in this most important primary. It has been over 15 years since I was a registered Democrat so that shows how important I believe this race will be.
A current list of candidates can be found here. Of particular note are Democratic candidates Bill Peduto and Michael Lamb, who declared before Ravenstahl withdrew.
You have until April 22, 2013 to register to vote and I'm assuming that means any changes in your registration as well.
The deadline for in-person voter registration is 30 days prior to each primary or election. Registration-by-mail forms must be postmarked no later than the voter registration deadline in order to be processed for the upcoming primary or election.

Attention All Ceramics Artists!
SCC is now accepting applications for our Raphael Prize Exhibition. All finalists to be included in exhibition at SCC. Winner receives $5,000, video profile and feature exhibition.
In 1997, in celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Society for Contemporary Craft, a $5,000 prize for excellence in the field of contemporary craft was established. The biennial award is given in conjunction with a catalogue, juried exhibition at SCC, and video profile. This opportunity is funded by the daughters of Elizabeth R. Raphael, the founder of SCC and a nationally known figure in the contemporary art scene for many decades.
Each year a different craft material is chosen to define the exhibition. This year (2013) explores clay. The overall theme for each iteration is “Transformation.”

Raw Artists: Give us money and we'll throw a party with your art?
The RAW Artists wagon rolled through town this past Thursday. I am skeptical of any organization or gallery who makes the artist pay up front without anything tangible in return. I didn't attend so I don't have that end of things to contribute. I certainly wouldn't call it a scam but it certainly should be looked at critically from the standpoint of the artist.
From a numbers standpoint the artists selling tickets account for roughly 480 of the 500 people who attended the Raw Artists Pittsburgh event. From the website and fakebook page I could identify a minimum of 24 artists so figuring each artist had to sell 20 tickets at $10 a piece that accounts for 96% of the total attendance which the Post Gazette identified as 500. It doesn't look good when you look at it from the artists' perspective when you consider the 24 artists and bands brought the majority of the people who attended. That's like paying a gallery and then having to bring all the people and either make them pay to get in or cover them yourself. And we haven't even gotten to sales, real exposure etc and the artist is down $200.
Maybe it will turn into something much bigger down the line but for now I would remain skeptical and would push for details as far as who and what they are bringing to the table.
The following is worth taking a look at below.
Galleries that ask you to pay to show with them, in most cases, are a red-flag.
It seemed to me that they were using artists to promote them instead of the
other way around.

Say No To Buncher Company's Plans For Private Drives Along Allegheny River
It's bad enough we've waited this long for the possibility of decent river access in the Strip and Lawrenceville, now we have this...
Check out the Pittsburgh Post Gazette's article on the possibility of restricted river access and private drives via the Buncher Company along the Allegheny River in the Strip District.
And the URA rears it's head...
In a statement, the URA defended the Buncher plan, noting that its
Riverfront Landing development would provide far more access to the
river than now is available in the Strip District. That's true, but
cordoning off any portions of the new neighborhood is unacceptable,
especially considering the tax incentives that are being proposed to
assist the developers.
Make yourself heard ASAP!

Wild Purveyors Preview October 16 5308 Butler St Lawrenceville

This Sunday, October 16 from 5:30 to 8:30 pm at 5308 Butler Street in Upper Lawrenceville get a preview of what Wild Purveyors is bringing to the neighborhood! From mushrooms to cheese and meats and beyond I'm a big fan of what they bring to CSA's and various markets and restaurants.
No charge but donations will be accepted and it's a family friendly event.
This is a big step forward for the area in terms of great local food options!
Celebrate our future opening of the Wild Purveyors - PA Farms Market with us this Sunday from 5:30 to 8:30pm! artist Brian Ferrel, Your New Aesthetic, at SCC Satellite Gallery
Your New Aesthetic, a solo show featuring local artist Brian Ferrel, will open at SCC's satellite gallery on October 14th, 2011. Perhaps best known for his woodworking, Ferrel is an exceptional metalsmith as well. More info here.
