“the imprint of war: responses in print”, University of Pittsburgh
New Exhibition Curated by Pitt Students Showcases Works from War-Inspired Artists “the imprint of war: responses in print” to run through Dec. 5 on Pitt campus
PITTSBURGH, PA— A new exhibition, the imprint of war: responses in print, features three distinct print artists, working in different styles of printmaking from woodblock to intaglio, whose works are the reactions to wars, both historical and contemporary. Showing the intimate, miniature prints by Jacques Callot, the 8.5x11’’ images by Nicolas Naughton, and the large, confrontational 4x8’ works of Sandow Birk, this exhibition focuses on the repetitions of history: unending wars and continual responses.
When asked his thoughts on being shown with artists Callot and Birk, Naughton states, “It's quite an honor to be showing with two artists who I have much respect for. This show will hopefully greet people as a conversation spanning many generations and speak to the larger issues that underlie all of our works. Birk and I are carrying a torch passed on by artists like Goya, Callot and Kollwitz, and we are not likely to be the last artists speaking to war in our work.” On his own work Naughton says, “My work is about not diminishing in the shadow of stronger forces; rather I want to rise to challenge them. It’s about the importance of empathy. When we cannot empathize with those who suffer, we allow their pain to continue with license. If we cannot empathize with foreign people or people with different political views, then communication is handicapped through intellectual stagnation. Through images, horrific or otherwise, we can create sympathetic reactions. For a moment what we see is a reflection of ourselves and what happens in those images is happening to us.”
The show is organized by students enrolled in the Museum Studies Seminar undergraduate course in Pitt’s History of Art and Architecture Department. The exhibition will be presented from October 31 to December 5 at the University Art Gallery in Pitt’s Frick Fine Arts Building, 650 Schenley Dr., Oakland. The gallery hours are Monday-Friday, 10-4. The students and their instructor, Janet McCall, executive director of Society for Contemporary Craft, will host an opening reception from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Oct. 31 in the gallery. The reception is free to the public and appetizers and refreshments will be served.

Post-Gazette and McMahon inflate Cultural Trust Stagehand wages. Pittsburgh,PA
October 10, 2011 Alert from Pittsburgh Arts Watch
Post-Gazette and McMahon inflate Stagehand wages Sunday, October 9, 2011
An article written by Marylynne Pitz and appearing in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette titled "Best Seats in the House" Kevin McMahon, President and CEO of the Cultural Trust said the organization can spend between $1,200 and $1,400 a day when it calls in four stagehands for eight hours to repair seats.
Upon doing the math it has been found that calling in four stagehands (since the Trust only has three at the Benedum) at the hourly rate and including benefits for eight hours the total wage is $741.44 and benefits total $237.26 for a total of $978.70 wages and benefits. A far cry from the $1,200 to 1,400 McMahon has said. Either the Post-Gazette has reported this wrong or McMahon needs to take a refresher course in math. More than likely this is just another attempt by the Trust to attack stagehands and continue a blatant disregard for it's own workforce.
This appears as just another recent incident where the Cultural Trust uses its own stagehands as a scapegoat for all the organizations financial woes. There is no doubt the stagehands see a total lack of respect and under attack by their own employer. The same workforce of talented stagehands that have been in place for over 24 years for the Cultural Trust. The same Stagehands who are an integral part of making the Cultural District a success and a premiere destination for entertainment. The same Stagehands that construct, build, and make the magic happen for the entertainment industry within the Pittsburgh Cultural district at the Benedum Center, Byham Theater, Heinz Hall, the O’Reilly Theater, The Cabaret Theater, Katz Plaza and others. The same Stagehands that are being ignored by the Cultural Trust as it continues to expand and operate such events as First Night Celebration, the Three Rivers Arts Festival, Jazz Festival, Cosmopolitan Pittsburgh and Gallery Crawls. The same organization that continues to give monumental salary increases to top management since 2001. (check for yourself).
One must ask is there anyone with a rational mind that can reign in on such lunacy.

"This is NOT Art" by J.D. Whitewolf
"This is NOT Art" by J.D. Whitewolf
Exploring the differences between technology and design and art.
Runs from Oct 7 to Oct 29, 2011
Take a self-guided tour of some of the artifacts of the latest designpocalypse and learn, by way of vivid examples, some of the ways we've been duped into believing that design, and the technology that underlies it, is 'art'. Bonus Material: free definition of art with every visit!
...
Multi-diciplinary works utilizing materials as varied as computer monitors, freshly cut logs, and at least one toilet! Visitors are encouraged to practice the enlightening and enjoyable activity of thinking for themselves*.
*While being told what to think, of course!
Artists Statement:
"Ever since we've had philosophy and something to write on we've been asking the question 'What is art?'. Many opinions have been offered -- nearly one for each person who's lived since antiquity. Now, thanks to techniques such as differential neurophysiology, and tools such as the Laws of Evolution, we are finally beginning to build towards answering this question. Most of us have been trained, by incessant marketing, to believe that the well designed stuff that surrounds us is 'art'. This show gives us a moment to take a step back from some of the designed objects in our lives and re-evaluate the idea of 'design as art'."
J.D. Whitewolf is currently the 'Designgineer' at the Entertainment Technology Center at Carnegie Mellon University. At the ETC he brings his experience to bear guiding students as they learn to 'assemble' and build cool things. Prior to joining the staff at CMU, Mr. Whitewolf was the staff engineer at the Human Engineering Research Laboratory at the University of Pittsburgh. Before moving to Pittsburgh, he and his wife and children resided outside of Richmond, Virginia, where he worked prototyping autonomous vehicle technology for the Science Museums of Virginia and where he continued his previous 20 year career as a theatrical production designer and technical director. Mr. Whitewolf is one of the founding members of the African American Repertory Theatre (Virginia) and is the creator of the theory of emotional perception called 'Spatial Harmonics'. He is also an advisor to the board of Assemble, an educational arts and technology center, and says he looks forward to sharing with, and learning from, the arts community here in Pittsburgh.

In 2001 Carnegie Museum of Art was entrusted with the archive of nearly 80,000 negatives produced by African American photographer Charles “Teenie” Harris. Beginning October 28, 2011, the museum presents a groundbreaking retrospective exhibition in celebration of the artist whose work is considered one of the most complete portraits anywhere of 20th-century African American experience.
The groundbreaking exhibition will celebrate the artist/photographer whose work is considered one of the most complete portraits anywhere of 20th-century African American experience. Large-scale, themed photographic projections of nearly 1,000 of Teenie Harris’s greatest images accompanied by an original jazz soundtrack will generate an immersive experience in the exhibition’s opening gallery. Subsequent galleries will present a chronological display of these photographs at a conventional scale, and give visitor access to the more than 73,000 catalogued and digitized images in the museum’s Teenie Harris Archive. The exhibition will offer an examination of Harris’s working process and artistry, and audio commentary on the man and his work by the people who knew him. In addition, the photographs and many of these materials will be accessible on Carnegie Museum of Art’s website.

BULLYING CAN CAUSE LASTING HARM—IT’S NOT A JOKE
BULLYING CAN CAUSE LASTING HARM—IT’S NOT A JOKE
Faces Seen, Hearts Unknown
On Saturday, October 15 at 1pm, the Society for Contemporary Craft, co-sponsored with the Dignity and Respect Campaign, will host Faces Seen, Hearts Unknown - a community dialogue to address ideas of personal identity and bullying. This program is free and open to the public. A $10 donation is suggested.
Individuals interested in participating in this dialogue are asked to R.S.V.P. to 412.261.7003 x15 or at www.surveymonkey.com/s/MVBZ923 by Wednesday, October 12.
PITTSBURGH, PA – September 27, 2011 — Bullying can happen anywhere: face-to-face, by text messages or on the web. It is not limited by age, gender, or education level. It is not a phase and it is not a joke—bullying can cause lasting harm. Faces Seen Hearts Unknown, co-sponsored by the Society for Contemporary Craft and the Dignity & Respect Campaign and presented at SCC in Pittsburgh’s Strip District on Saturday, October 15, 2011 at 1 pm, explores this issue through community dialogue.
Taken from a Spanish proverb, the expression Faces Seen Hearts Unknown refers to superficial judgments made about people, based solely on appearances, and cautions that to truly know a person or a community, one needs genuine access to their emotions. Faces Seen Hearts Unknown is presented in concert with SCC’s Bridge Exhibition Series and a featured installation, The Captains Congress, created by nationally recognized ceramic artist Anne Drew Potter. With an interest in the complex and contradictory nature of the human experience, Potter makes "performative" ceramic figures and unsettling installations that address the ways in which social meaning is projected onto forms of the body. By creating a tension between physical forms and exaggerated expressions, Potter highlights signifiers of gender, race, and age, and encourages viewers to confront their feelings about normalcy and difference. The artist explains, "I am interested in the moment when the self-evidence of our own experiences is challenged by confrontation with the other, the infinity of realities that exist outside of our own."
For Faces Seen Hearts Unknown, six individuals from the community have been invited to share personal stories to help visitors better understand issues of identity and bullying, which are central in Potter's installation. Christina Springer, a home educator and text artist who uses poetry, dance, theatre, film and other visual expressions, and Reverend Michele Pearl Ellison, an author, motivational speaker and civil rights activist, are among the participants. Matt Arch, program manager at the Center for Inclusion at UPMC, will facilitate the discussion. Individuals interested in participating in this dialogue are asked to R.S.V.P. to 412.261.7003 x15 or at www.surveymonkey.com/s/MVBZ923 by Wednesday, October 12.
The 2011 Bridge Exhibition Series highlights the work of three female artists from diverse racial and cultural backgrounds who are creating exceptional works that express progressive and unconventional points of view around social and cultural themes. For the series, Potter has created an installation titled The Captains Congress, which consists of 16 distorted figures. Fifteen of the figures are seated in a circle; each wearing a sailor-style hat made from newspaper. The figures are talking all at once in an animated manner. The lone figure seated outside of the circle-ironically larger, more naturally rendered-is at the mercy of these shorter and more distorted figures. Her face betrays a hidden voice a desire to share and be included in the group. The installation explores self-appointed authority, ineffective communication, bullying, and victimization.
Now celebrating its 40th anniversary, SCC offers exhibitions focusing on multicultural diversity and non-mainstream art, a range of classes, and a retail store. Located at 2100 Smallman Street in Pittsburgh, PA, SCC is open Monday through Saturday, 10 am to 5 pm. Admission is free. For information, visit contemporarycraft.org or call 412.261.7003. The Bridge Exhibition Series is made possible, in part, by the Allegheny Regional Asset District, the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, the Elizabeth R. Raphael Fund of The Pittsburgh Foundation, and The Fine Foundation.
The Center for Inclusion at UPMC introduced the Dignity & Respect Campaign to UPMC employees in 2008 to promote inclusion through behavioral and organizational change. In 2009, the Dignity & Respect Campaign was launched as a community initiative, which has engaged more than 50 organizations, and led to the unveiling of a website that is inspiring people across the United States. What began as a workplace initiative to foster a culture of inclusion, dignity, and respect at UPMC, is today a movement promoting inclusion in the workplace, community unity, and anti-bullying in schools.

A meeting will be taking place within the month where several potential contributors discuss the goals of a new blog and give it a new name.
You can still submit visual art events for consideration but they may only be briefly covered in a weekly post entitled Upcoming Visual Art Events.

*small neighbors/Microbiota*, new work by Erika Johnson and Daniel Maidman
*small neighbors/Microbiota*
new work by Erika Johnson and Daniel Maidman
Brew House Space 101
2100 Mary Street, Pittsburgh
October 15 - November 6, 2011
Opening Reception on October 15 from 7:00 - 10:00 pm
Free public workshop October 22, 2:00 - 4:00 pm
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
For press inquiries please contact Erika Johnson at 412-996-2836 or email
info@philodina.com
Erika Johnson began making low-resolution microscopic video in 2010 after attending a workshop at Carnegie Mellon's Studio for Creative Inquiry. With a simple reversed-lens webcam, she photographs the tiny creatures that inhabit Pittsburgh's rivers and urban ponds. small neighbors/Microbiota incorporates video and stills, a live microscopic installation, and Brooklyn-based artist Daniel Maidman's lush oil paintings based on Johnson's
photographs.
The exhibition at the Brew House (2100 Mary Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15203) opens with a public reception from 7 - 10 pm on Saturday, October 15, and continues through November 6. The gallery will be open to the public on October 17, 22 and 24 and on November 5 from 2 - 6 pm. Patrons may also call 412-996-2836 or email info@philodina.com to schedule an appointment.
On Saturday, October 22, Erika Johnson will offer a free hands-on "small neighbors" community workshop for all ages. Participants will learn about the technology used to make the work, and will also learn to identify and draw some of the protozoa and phytoplankton that live in the puddles, ponds, and rivers around us.
Erika Johnson makes installations that explore mutual entanglement, desire, memory, and community. She has had solo exhibitions at Nashville's Plowhaus, Twist, Blend Studio, and Parthenon galleries, and at the Kelly-Strayhorn Theater in Pittsburgh. Her 2009 work Curtain was named Best Installation by the Nashville Scene, and she was commissioned to create a permanent installation for the Robert Penn Warren Center for the Humanities at Vanderbilt University. Johnson has taught workshops on assemblage and book and paper arts at the Union Project and Kelly Strayhorn Theater in Pittsburgh, at Vanderbilt University, and numerous other venues in Nashville, TN. She works at the Pittsburgh Center for Creative Reuse.
About this work, she says: "The lens of my little camera, with its smudges and limitations, is a rabbit hole through which I descend into an enchanted universe. The small citizens of the water around us are both ubiquitous and mysterious. While billions of protozoa – more than all the people on the planet – may live in a single pond, i can spend hours watching a single philodina in a pickle jar. At the intersections of science and art, of taxonomy and beauty, I consider interconnectedness, cathexis, pets and ethics, complexity, and death."
Johnson's collaborator, Daniel Maidman, was inspired by her work to create a series of paintings depicting the world of the microscopic.
Daniel Maidman’s current paintings range from the figure and portraiture to still lives, machines, and cityscapes. His work has been shown in juried shows in New York, California, Ohio, Missouri, and Oregon, and at Gallery Mess, the restaurant of the Saatchi Gallery in London. His paintings or words have been published by ARTnews, American Art Collector, International Artist, American Artist, Poets/Artists, and SUNY-Potsdam. His writing on Da Vinci will be taught at DePaul University later this year. His work is included in, among others, the collections of entrepeneur Howard Tullman, novelist China Miéville, and author Kathleen Rooney. He is represented by Gitana Rosa Gallery in Brooklyn, NY, and Hilliard Gallery in Kansas City,
MO.
About the Microbiota paintings, Maidman says, "We are accustomed to paintings of life in a recognizable world: solid, large, and invested with familiar meanings. There is no reason the same painterly techniques so well suited to a figure, a still life, or a landscape, can't turn their attention to a world utterly alien, defined by buoyancy, translucence, and eccentric strategies of survival. Broadening our perspective to include the tiny and transitory, things that barely exist at all, meshes us more tightly to all the faces of our miraculous world. By considering the microbe, we enrich and deepen our sense of beauty - in other words, our humanity."
Located in the old Duquesne Brewery Building in Pittsburgh's historic South Side, Brew House SPACE 101 is an alternative exhibition space with a mission to represent emerging and underrepresented artists in all media as well as hosting a broad range of community projects. Each year several exhibitions are selected from proposals.
