The 16th Annual Empty Bowls Dinner will be held Sunday, March 6, 2011 at Rodef Shalom Congregation in Oakland from 2 pm – 6 pm. Empty Bowls is a simple meal of soup and bread that reminds us that many of our neighbors are struggling to feed their families.

All proceeds benefit the Food Bank and Just Harvest.

Larry Berger from Saturday Light Brigade Radio will host this family-friendly event with a strolling magician and children’s activities. We're expecting personality soup-servers and guests from local media. Empty Bowls draws over 1,200 people, and over 15 years has raised more than $425,000 to fight hunger in our communities.

Each ticket holder chooses a ceramic bowl from among over 1,200 on display, hand made by potters, professional and amateur, from all over the area. There is also a silent auction of the "bowls of the ball," and the Celebrity Bowls Auction!

Celebrity Bowls Auction Update: we've been collecting autographed bowls all year long from Sir Paul McCartney, Jackie Evancho, Sidney Crosby and more Pittsburgh Penguins, and many more!

The Food Bank and Just Harvest thank all the many local high schools, community classes, elementary schools, and professional ceramic studios and individuals who contribute to Empty Bowls!

Shaw Galleries: Beauty, Strength, Reflection Art Exhibit April 1-30 2011 Pgh PA

PITTSBURGH, PA, 3/3/10 – Shaw Galleries is pleased to announce the opening on Friday, April 1, 2011 of "BEAUTY - STRENGTH - REFLECTION: Five Perspectives on the Female Form," an exhibit featuring five women artists from Pittsburgh in a remarkable Spring show of fine art paintings. The exhibition runs through Saturday, April 30. PLEASE NOTE NEW GALLERY HOURS are 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays.

Within their chosen medium, these five women share their perspectives on feminine form and style. Not to be confused with nude figurative studies, these new works convey an uninhibited simplicity, a quiet, sagacious strength and luminous nobility with the focus being color, light, texture and shape. Each artist has contributed individual works on paper and canvas, as well as a five-piece collaborative piece titled "Dressing Matters" that serves as a focal point of the show.

The opening is Friday, April 1 from 5:30 to 9:30 p.m.

The Pittsburgh is Art Day of Giving is a 24-hour donation match campaign and opportunity to increase giving to our thriving arts and culture sector. Initiated by the Greater Pittsburgh Arts council and the Heinz Endowments, it is sponsored by The Pittsburgh Foundation and modeled after their October 2010 PittsburghGives Day of Giving.

Goals

1. Increase individual giving to arts and culture nonprofits.
2. Draw attention to Pittsburgh's diverse and vibrant arts and culture community.
3. Attract new donors and new dollars.

Basics

• The match pool will contain between $350,000-500,000 from the Heinz Endowments, The Pittsburgh Foundation, The Hillman Foundation and other local funders. Every organization that receives funds during the match period will receive a portion of the match. The matching dollars will be pro-rated.
• Donors will have 24 hours to give. Only credit card gifts through PittsburghGives.org will be eligible for matching funds. No gifts from checks, cash, gift card redemptions, or donor-advised fund grants will be eligible for matching funds.
• Minimum gift eligible for match: $15
• Maximum gift to a single organization: $10,000
• Each participating organization is eligible to receive funds with no maximum limit for the organization. Organizations are prohibited from donating to themselves.
• Participating organizations will receive pre- and post-event surveys which they must complete and return. Organizations are also required to report gift results including size of donor pool, average gift size, number of new donors, total amount of gifts received from returning donors.

The Pittsburgh is Art Day of Giving supports arts and culture organizations in the Pittsburgh region. Organizations must:

• Be a nonprofit with 501(c)(3) status OR
• Be an arts-focused program, department or subsidiary functioning under the umbrella of a larger 501(c)3 that has its own (1) financial statements and (2) more than one dedicated staff member.
• File an IRS Form 990 with annual revenues of $25,000 or more. (Preferred but not required. If you do not file an IRS Form 990, you must provide income statements and balance sheets for the past three fiscal years.)
• Have an up-to-date portrait on the PittsburghGives.org website on or before March 25, 2011. This is a group art show featuring 14 local artists of all different genres, given the title "There's Beauty in Tragedy". Show will be from 7pm-2am, no cover, and hip hop DJ from 10-2am. We are asking for donations for our charity, The Womens Place. The following is a brief artist statement regarding Piano.

Artist’s Statement

Anything simple always strikes personal interest. Therefore, my work revolves around the idea that simplicity in itself brings about complex notions. The juxtaposition of both ideas internally ignites fire of creativity.

With inspirations stemming from Picasso to modern graffiti artists along with the use of monotone colors, simple lines, and recycled materials, my visually basic artwork begins to speak to a complex audience.

In addition, I believe very strongly in maintaining an eco-conscious living. Therefore, all pieces are composed using recycled materials and refurbished framing.

For this year's GA/GI Festival we are putting out an Art Call for artists for to participate in the upcoming exhibition at the Irma Freeman Center for Imagination: Antiquated and Future (or Imaginary) Technologies II. This will be a group show, where artists are invited to enter up to three pieces of found/collected or constructed Technology. The idea of technology may include plans, kinetic/robotic or other objects, such as video, film, posters, prints, paintings, installations, state of the art, green, DIY or preexisting, obsolete or dying technologies. All art or artifacts must be accompanied by a biography of the artist/collector, and an Artist Statement of how the submission(s) relates to the above theme.
