Dear Pittsburgh: This Mayoral Race Should Be About Policies and Vision

It's maddening to see people already lining up for candidates who don't even have their policies published.  This reminds of so many elections where it's the guy and not the specific policies and vision. And the personal comments belittling the other candidates are surfacing once again, showing how small-minded people can be. And that yeah, I really like that guy, he's one of us nonsense.   And yes, I'm talking about Jack Wagner.  It's been more than 30 days since Luke's announcement and his website has nothing as far as specific policies.  That's a really bad sign and to me it signifies how little things like policy mean to him and Pittsburgh.  He's our guy, he's been in Harrisburg for a while.  That's great but I prefer candidates who take me seriously and publish their policies and vision well in advance of the primary and Bill Peduto has done this.

People that vote primarily based on the personality of the candidate stop progress. Literally.  I'd also like to point out the wisdom which comes from the independent candidate Daniel Lynch which every person in the region should read and contemplate.  I can't think of something more important than an outside perspective and one that is not steeped in bureaucratic thinking, especially for Pittsburgh.

P.S. The other candidates don't even have a website! It's 2013.  Don't ask people to vote for you if you don't have a website.

Pittsburgh and Braddock Murals, New Website PghMurals.com

Pittsburgh and Braddock Murals: I especially like when they do the more in-depth looks at the murals which tend to justify more information, just click on the more info icon once you have selected a mural.  Great project!

Now all we need is a more balanced and varied approach to the types of mural/public art in the region in terms of language, subject matter and mediums.

Eco-equation: new public sculpture located at 5111 Penn Avenue in the Pittsburgh neighborhood of Garfield

Eco-equation

Eco-equation is a new public sculpture located at 5111 Penn Avenue in the Pittsburgh neighborhood of Garfield. The 16ʼ wide by 12ʼ tall installation will be completed on September 14, 2011.

This project is a Pittsburgh first, combining self sustaining energy design within the context of public art. The sculpture contains two low voltage electricity generating systems that provide power for itʼs own power consumption needs. The sculpture harnesses both sun and wind energy which charge batteries by means of solar panels and functional wind turbine. The self generated power is used to energize LED lighting illuminating the sculpture at night from within. Symbols representing Sun + Wind = Light deliver a message in the form of a simple, yet self defining equation.

Lead artist David Edwards and Paul Cha fabricated the sculpture and the technical systems that manage power and lighting. Beginning in 2010 Edwards worked with neighborhood leaders, the Bloomfield Garfield Corporation and the architects and designers of CMUʼs EcoDesigners Guild to create a model for a public artwork that delivers a simple, direct and positive message.

Edwards notes, “Iʼm focusing on the intersection of art, technology and sustainable design. These crossroads have fostered partnerships with many regional institutions, each with diverse missions. I push for an approach where you interact directly with the people that your art is effecting. The neighborhood has been very supportive and we have made many new friends.”

Eco-equation is one of a handful of ongoing Penn Avenue projects sponsored by the Urban Renovation Associationʼs Green and Screen program. Installations use innovate means and materials to revitalize unused lots in The Penn Avenue corridor.

Pittsburgh Arts Watch: A Watchdog Group Re Pittsburgh Cultural Trust, Civic Light, Opera, Ballet Theatre

I came across an interesting site today by the name of Pittsburgh Arts Watch which is run by IATSE Local #3.

A Watchdog Group is being formulated by workers that feel they are squeezed and overlooked by the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust and its Resident Organizations comprising of the Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera, The Pittsburgh Opera, and The Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre.

The goal is simple – it is educational fact finding on the finances of the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust and its Resident Organizations. The information on the Site is provided for educational and/or informational purposes only. The Group will examine financial reports and track records. It will look at factors such as Executive Compensation, Public and Private Organization-subsidized activities. It will further take into closer scrutiny how Grant money is utilized through the hard working tax dollars that are received from the State and County. The uses and potential questionable uses of monies of the Cultural Trust and resident organizations that are received by citizens, donors, Private Companies, Grants through state funded tax dollars and others.

The Atrocity Exhibition, Morose and Macabre May 14 2011 Rex Pittsburgh Pa

Welcome to Vaude-vile Asylum....please allow the nice white-coats to strap you in....you're going to be with us for a while....

Dr. Morose and Miss Macabre are back, after spending some time in the
basement studying medicine. This year, we invite our esteemed colleagues and peers to bear witness to the newest incarnation of the Atrocity Exhibition in all its blood-soaked, bound-and-gagged, lobotomized glory. We hope you will join ...us as we drag out some of our favorite patients and we admit some new ones. We have the forms right here. Here, in the asylum, it's diagnosis: death and the prescription is your ticket to Atrocity Exhibition 2011 an evening of insane art of fetish performance, skull crushing music, and mad, dark art displays....

*Patient #04872 - The House of Deville's Kabarett Vulgare
(North Carolina)
Kabarett Vulgare is a collective of artists from all types of mediums and backrounds. They are a

*Patient #03667 - Macabre Noir
(Pennsylvania)
Macabre Noir -alter ego of The House of Oddities, Miss Macabre Incorporating sideshow human pin cushion performance into alternative/tradtional forms of burlesque with a signature fan dance but allowing feathers to be pierced and anchored into the flesh of her shoulders and chest forming organic wing body extensions....leaving you wincing in both pain and pleasure.

3X!13 is an electronic, down tempo, space rock machine. Consisting of Frank and Nick from Filth On Demand and Trey on synths. They cover a wide range of electronic styles, from dark and slow to the distorted and fast, to a combination of the two...never stopping on one sound for too long. Often just a "back burner" experimental platform for 'something bigger' that they were involved in, 3X!13 has been alive and making music since 2001 and have been performing live since 2009.

Patient #07613 - Prometheus Burning
(Pennsylvania)
Formed in 2001, Prometheus Burning is a renegade Electro duo. With visual artist Nikki Telladictorian delivering lyrical lashings on the frontlines while producer Greg VanEck mans the electro battlestation of drum machines, modular synths, and circuit bent devices, Prometheus Burning attacks you with a full scale sonic assault upon the senses. Operating from the fringe and defying definition, they forge an aggressive and eccentric sound that often blurs the line between electronic genres, from dancefloor killing beats to complex chaotic noise.

Free Design, Logo, Illustration Work. Free Art! Pittsburgh PA

from an old craigslist post found by Sam Thorp

Every day, there are more and more CraigsList posts seeking “artists” for everything from auto graphics to comic books to corporate logo designs. More people are finding themselves in need of some form of illustrative service.

But what they’re NOT doing, unfortunately, is realizing how rare someone with these particular talents can be.

To those who are “seeking artists”, let me ask you; How many people do you know, personally, with the talent and skill to perform the services you need? A dozen? Five? One? …none?

More than likely, you don’t know any. Otherwise, you wouldn’t be posting on craigslist to find them.

And this is not really a surprise.

In this country, there are almost twice as many neurosurgeons as there are professional illustrators. There are eleven times as many certified mechanics. There are SEVENTY times as many people in the IT field.

So, given that they are less rare, and therefore less in demand, would it make sense to ask your mechanic to work on your car for free? Would you look him in the eye, with a straight face, and tell him that his compensation would be the ability to have his work shown to others as you drive down the street?

Would you offer a neurosurgeon the “opportunity” to add your name to his resume as payment for removing that pesky tumor? (Maybe you could offer him “a few bucks” for “materials”. What a deal!)

Would you be able to seriously even CONSIDER offering your web hosting service the chance to have people see their work, by viewing your website, as their payment for hosting you?

If you answered “yes” to ANY of the above, you’re obviously insane. If you answered “no”, then kudos to you for living in the real world.

But then tell me… why would you think it is okay to live out the same, delusional, ridiculous fantasy when seeking someone whose abilities are even less in supply than these folks?

Graphic artists, illustrators, painters, etc., are skilled tradesmen. As such, to consider them as, or deal with them as, anything less than professionals fully deserving of your respect is both insulting and a bad reflection on you as a sane, reasonable person. In short, it makes you look like a twit.

A few things you need to know;

1. It is not a “great opportunity” for an artist to have his work seen on your car/’zine/website/bedroom wall, etc. It IS a “great opportunity” for YOU to have their work there.

2. It is not clever to seek a “student” or “beginner” in an attempt to get work for free. It’s ignorant and insulting. They may be “students”, but that does not mean they don’t deserve to be paid for their hard work. You were a “student” once, too. Would you have taken that job at McDonalds with no pay, because you were learning essential job skills for the real world? Yes, your proposition it JUST as stupid.

3. The chance to have their name on something that is going to be seen by other people, whether it’s one or one million, is NOT a valid enticement. Neither is the right to add that work to their “portfolio”. They get to do those things ANYWAY, after being paid as they should. It’s not compensation. It’s their right, and it’s a given.

4. Stop thinking that you’re giving them some great chance to work. Once they skip over your silly ad, as they should, the next ad is usually for someone who lives in the real world, and as such, will pay them. There are far more jobs needing these skills than there are people who possess these skills.

5. Students DO need “experience”. But they do NOT need to get it by giving their work away. In fact, this does not even offer them the experience they need. Anyone who will not/can not pay them is obviously the type of person or business they should be ashamed to have on their resume anyway. Do you think professional contractors list the “experience” they got while nailing down a loose step at their grandmother’s house when they were seventeen?

If you your company or gig was worth listing as desired experience, it would be able to pay for the services it received. The only experience they will get doing free work for you is a lesson learned in what kinds of scrubs they should not lower themselves to deal with.

6. (This one is FOR the artists out there, please pay attention.) Some will ask you to “submit work for consideration”. They may even be posing as some sort of “contest”. These are almost always scams. They will take the work submitted by many artists seeking to win the “contest”, or be “chosen” for the gig, and find what they like most. They will then usually have someone who works for them, or someone who works incredibly cheap because they have no originality or talent of their own, reproduce that same work, or even just make slight modifications to it, and claim it as their own. You will NOT be paid, you will NOT win the contest. The only people who win, here, are the underhanded folks who run these ads. This is speculative, or “spec”, work. It’s risky at best, and a complete scam at worst. I urge you to avoid it, completely. For more information on this subject, please visit www.no-spec.com.

So to artists/designers/illustrators looking for work, do everyone a favor, ESPECIALLY yourselves, and avoid people who do not intend to pay you. Whether they are “spec” gigs, or just some guy who wants a free mural on his living room walls. They need you. You do NOT need them.

And for those who are looking for someone to do work for free… please wake up and join the real world. The only thing you’re accomplishing is to insult those with the skills you need. Get a clue.

PITTSBURGH, PA, 3/3/10 – Shaw Galleries is pleased to announce the opening on Friday, April 1, 2011 of "BEAUTY - STRENGTH - REFLECTION: Five Perspectives on the Female Form," an exhibit featuring five women artists from Pittsburgh in a remarkable Spring show of fine art paintings. The Pittsburgh Art Blog

The Pittsburgh Art Blog features selected pittsburgh artists and upcoming exhibits with photos from the artists and galleries. since the major press outlets do not go beyond a directory listing of exhibits, blogs are needed to promote pittsburgh artists and their work. the blog also calls attention to the inferiority complex of pittsburgh art and how it's perpetuated by the major players in town. Started on August 20,2007. pittsburgh area galleries and art venues are listed at the sister site www.PghGalleries.com.

the blog and website are volunteer projects from fine art photographer and pittsburgh artist advocate rick byerly.
