Teach 4 Amerika Tour: Rally at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh is Next Stop in Cross-Country Tour

Rally at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh is Next Stop in Cross-Country Tour

New York-based artist group The Bruce High Quality Foundation (BHQF) will continue their national Teach 4 Amerika tour with a public rally on Saturday, April 2 at Carnegie Mellon University, Doherty Hall Room 2210, 5000 Forbes Avenue in Pittsburgh. Inspired by the spectacle and energy of a political rally and featuring a multimedia presentation by BHQF, balloons, t-shirts, and music from a local marching band, the event is the next in a series of rallies and conversations that call for a rethinking of the current art education system. Teach 4 Amerika is a five-week, 11-city, coast-to-coast road trip, presented by Creative Time, that will cross state lines and institutional boundaries to inspire and enable local art students to define the future of their own educational experience.

Traveling the byways of America in a limousine painted as a school bus, BHQF will visit university art departments, art schools, art institutions, and alternative spaces across the nation. The national tour, which began in New York on March 29 with a kickoff rally at the Cooper Union, will continue through May 2 with a combination of dynamic public rallies and intimate conversations hosted by local partners in Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Chicago, Minneapolis/St Paul, Detroit, Denver, Santa Fe, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Portland.

For more information and a complete list of tour stops and events, visit www.teach4amerika.com.

Tim Meehan and Dan Vogel

Hi everyone,

On short notice, the Academy received the opportunity to show some paintings on Friday as part of the Penn Avenue First Friday gallery crawl! Academy instructors will be showing paintings, and we'll have music provided by our friends Jill and Tina, the always popular DJs Tracksploitation, and the Academy's own Tim and Dan performing as The Judas Bull!

We'll be kicking off around 8, and going til after midnight. We'll have drinks and hopefully food, so come on down for a great evening of art and music.

The address is 5020 Penn Ave in the ICAG gallery, where we've had our previous Harvest shows.

Also, as a reminder, Shervin Iranshahr will be having a solo show on Saturday, called Demons and Deities.

“Tree Lines” Exhibition at Élan Fine Art Gallery

“Tree Lines” Exhibition at Élan Fine Art Gallery Provides Varied Perspectives in Art

427 Broad Street in Sewickley

As this year’s Sewickley Spring Gallery Walk opens on Arbor Day, Élan Gallery felt it only fitting to partner with Fern Hollow Nature Center with an exhibition entitled “Tree Lines”, on display from April 29th through May 28th at 427 Broad Street in Sewickley.

Artists with roots in Southwestern Pennsylvania offer their perspectives on trees in a variety of styles and media. From glass, sculpture, and furniture to works in watercolor, acrylic, oil, mixed media, photography, digital artwork and woodcut prints, there is something for every taste and interest. Élan Gallery is also branching out to the East Side of Pittsburgh by bringing to Sewickley custom made furniture, fashioned from reclaimed wood, by Urban Tree Forge.

A portion of the proceeds from this exhibition will benefit Fern Hollow Nature Center’s Native Tree Walk. In addition to interesting works of art, Élan Gallery also will be offering gallery talks on Saturday, April 30th, featuring Fern Hollow and selected artists. Plus, on display will be beautiful rain barrels painted by local school children which will be raffled off to benefit Fern Hollow’s Natural Outdoor Classroom. The drawing will be held at Fern Hollow and the Sewickley Heights History Center's Family Fun Day on May 21st.

The artist reception is open to the public during the Sewickley Spring Gallery Walk on Friday, April 29 from 5pm –9pm at Élan Gallery. Gallery hours for this month long event are Thursday and Friday 5pm-8pm and Saturday from 11am –8pm and by appointment.

Artists featured in this exhibition: Clare Ascani, Joan Barenbregge, Linda Breen, Darlene Dech, Kate Gillery, Jeffrey Moyer, Gail Murray, Mark Panza, Charles Pitcher, Sherrie Plonski, Joe Renckly, Phil Salvato, James Shipman, Ron Thurston, and Hugh Watkins.

Also, see artists paint en plein air during May Mart on Saturday, May 7th from noon – 2pm, and celebrate your four legged friends during Sewickley Unleashed on May 14th from noon – 2pm at Élan Gallery.

Water-Babies

“Water-Babies” is a series of drawings, paintings and sculptures based on the haunting stone figures marking children’s graves in the Okunoin cemetery that I experienced on a trip to Japan last October.

Okunoin is located in Mount Koyasan, a mountain range to the south of Osaka. It is the largest cemetery in Japan and was settled in 819 by the monk Kukai. Located in the Koyasan religious center, it is dedicated to Shingon Japanese Buddhism and includes 120 temples. Koyasan is designated as a World Heritage sacred site.

In this series inspired by Okunoin, I depict images of the statues that mark the graves of children. The presence of these otherworldly stone figures has remained in my mind since my trip. The statues range in size from smaller than a foot, to human scale, and depict childlike figures, sometimes simply dressed as a monk or Bodhisattva (an enlightened or holy person). In modern Japan, these figures represent Mizuko Jizo, the “patron saint” of lost children who have died prematurely, infants, newborns or stillborn children. The two Chinese characters that make up his name “Mizu-ko” translate to “water- baby”, signifying the lost children who float in an otherworld realm.

Before the 20th century, there was less than a 50% chance of a child surviving to age seven. Even today in current Japanese culture, very young children have a revered role as “mysterious beings”, who are not quite of this world, or fully rooted to this life, and thought of almost as oracles or a link between humans and the gods.

The Okunoin cemetery is populated with hundreds of these little statues dedicated to Mizuko Jizo and the lost children they memorialize. The figures are frequently dressed in little clothes or red bibs by the parents of a departed child, in the hopes that the spirits will recognize their child from the bib he or she wore and provide protection. Walking through Okunoin, filled with its ancient trees, and forest of stone figures, one is humbled by the presence of so many people, and so many years. Some of the bibs on the little stone figures are firecracker red, others have faded. They are hauntingly sad, with a melancholy that follows you home. My drawings and paintings depict them with bright colors that seem to allude to the simultaneous living presence of the light I encountered that day on the early October walk through Okunoin.

My artwork is dedicated to these lost children, the “Water-Babies”, the namesake of this exhibition.

"The profits from the sale of this work benefit the recent Earthquake and Tsunami relief efforts of the Japan-America Society of Pennsylvania and Brother’s Brother Foundation."

Over the past months, supported by the Pennsylvania Humanities Council, Artists Image Resource has been working with Leslie Golomb and others to stimulate conversations about “making” in Pittsburgh and in the region. These conversations have evolved into this project. There are a number of vibrant and engaged artists, organizations and makers of all kinds in the region, come and hear some of them discuss what they do and see some of their work. Presses will be up and running for hands on printing.

Western PA

6-8pm
Exhibition Opening: Rethinking Pittsburgh’s Industrial Legacy
Workshop, vendor tables (AIR Open Studio, Justseeds, Shaw Galleries), refreshments

Events are free and open to the public

Did the industrial legacy end with deindustrialization? Rethinking Pittsburgh’s Industrial Legacy is a vibrant and critical new assessment of the region’s relationship with industry, telling an alternate history of industrialization that grapples with its material, social, and psychological effects, and calling attention to industry’s ongoing impact.

The artists in this exhibit, many with ties to Western Pennsylvania, explore the ways in which industry and deindustrialization inform our sense of place and our sense of possibility.

Artists: Crystala Armagost :: Patricia Bellan-Gellin Matthew Buchholz :: LaToya Ruby Frazier :: Shawn Gilheeney :: Howling Mob Society :: Martin Langford Hannah Reiff :: John Ritter :: Nick Satinover
Shaun Slifer :: Bill Yund
Original 19th century prints of Pittsburgh will also be on display.

A symposium, Printmaking: A Catalyst for Social Change in Western PA, will ask how artists and educators today engage with communities through printmaking and print-inspired art and collaborative practices.

The symposium will be moderated by Sarah Hall, curator of The Frick Museum, and will coincide with the opening of the exhibit on Saturday April 16, 2011 at 5:00pm. Panelists include Dana Bishop Root (Transformazium Braddock), Jenn Pascoe (AIR), Shaun Slifer (Just Seeds), Mary Tremonte (Andy Warhol Museum and Justseeds), and Heather White (CAPA and Andy Warhol Museum).

The symposium will be followed by the exhibition opening and a demonstration workshop of printing processes available for use at AIR. The opening will also feature vendor tables and refreshments.

This program has been supported in part by the Pennsylvania Humanities Council, the Federal-State Partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities and is part of Our Stories, Our Future as part of We the People a national initiative exploring the history of the United States.

Additional support for this program has been provided by Citizens Bank, Buncher Family Foundation and Judy and Chuck Perlow.

Moorings and Millsites, artist Dan Kuhn

Moorings and Millsites, artist Dan Kuhn

March 25, 2011 - May 29, 2011

Inspired by the melding of the natural and industrial landscapes that define Western Pennsylvania, artist Dan Kuhn explores Allegheny Counties changing environment through gestural ceramic sculptures. Choosing to work in forms that defy function, Kuhn’s sculptures mimic the sometimes rolling, often ragged mountainside. Planes and angles are defined with layered clay slips which create a subtle, earthy backdrop for imagery. The rust-colored decals reveal “engineered images of the Allegheny River… combined with photographs of Allegheny Ludlum and the surrounding towns, inferring a private connection and adaptation to the landscapes, “ explains Kuhn.

A native of Western Pennsylvania, Dan grew up in a small steel town, north east of Pittsburgh. He earned a BFA in ceramics at California University of Pennsylvania and recently completed his MFA in ceramics at Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP). Dan has been a technician and teacher for the Chautuaqua School of Arts, Wortendyke Ceramics studio, IUP Ceramics studio, Touchstone Center for Crafts, and SCC.

The artist currently works locally as a functional and sculptural ceramic artist as well as a teacher of throwing, hand-building and kiln firing. As a finalist in the 2011 Lydon Emerging Artist Program at SCC, Kuhn’s work is featured exclusively at SCC’s The Store.

Learn to decal with Dan Kuhn at SCC with his Introduction to Photo Decals class, to be held on Saturday June 4, 2011, 10-4pm and Sunday, June 5, 10-12pm. The tuition is $100 with a materials fee of $20. To register for this class call Laura at 412.261.7003.

SCC’s Satellite Gallery is located at 500 Grant Street in the lobby of the Steel Plaza T-Station at BNY Mellon Center in downtown Pittsburgh. It is open daily through midnight.

No worries about there being so much on Friday, April 1, 2011 as far as openings. I would prioritize with the GA/GI Festival (along with Unblurred) as the other openings have galleries with regular hours. By cramming too many openings into one night the art tends to take a back seat.

Note that for GA/GI they may not list all the Unblurred events. As of this posting April 1 events have not been listed yet but the usual venues plus the GA/GI events will be happening.

Friday April 1:

GA/GI and Unblurred

Beauty, Strength and Reflection at Shaw Galleries 5:30 to 9pm

Lizzy De Vita at Be Galleries 6-9 pm

Saturday April 2:

Shervin Iranshahr at Gallery 4 from 7-11 pm

SCC Fundraiser

GA/GI Events All Day

March 25, 26:

March 25th Gestures

March 25th Mask Exhibit

March 26th Women Artists of Pittsburgh

Starting March 25 Dan Kuhn

And Don't Forget Art All Night starts Saturday April 30!

Paper Politics: Socially Engaged Printmaking Today

Paper Politics: Socially Engaged Printmaking Today is a major collection of contemporary politically and socially engaged printmaking. This full color book showcases print art that uses themes of social justice and global equity to engage community members in political conversation. Based on an art exhibition which has traveled to a dozen cities in North America, Paper Politics features artwork by over 200 international artists; an eclectic collection of work by both activist and non-activist printmakers who have felt the need to respond to the monumental trends and events of our times.

$22 ($24.95 cover price)

More info here.

Justseeds Artists’ Cooperative is a decentralized network of 26 artists committed to making print and design work that reflects a radical social, environmental, and political stance. With members working from the U.S., Canada, and Mexico, Justseeds operates both as a unified collaboration of similarly minded printmakers and as a loose collection of creative individuals with unique viewpoints and working methods. We believe in the transformative power of personal expression in concert with collective action. To this end, we produce collective portfolios, contribute graphics to grassroots struggles for justice, work collaboratively both in- and outside the co-op, build large sculptural installations in galleries, and wheatpaste on the streets – all while offering each other daily support as allies and friends.

The Office of Public Art Needs Your Support!

---------------------------------------------------------------------

For more than two years, the Office of Public Art has served individual artists in the Pittsburgh region with the Artist Opportunities Listserv and the Pittsburgh Artist Registry. As you know, these amazing tools connect artists to new audiences with a website and links to local and national opportunities.

Although there is no cost for artists to use these services, they are not free. The Office of Public Art pays for server space, staff time, and web hosting for a total of $10,845 per year. Our goal is to keep providing these services at no cost to artists, but to keep going, we need your help!

If you have benefited from these services, and are able to give, please consider a tax-deductible donation in any amount.

Thank you to Justin Greenfield for his generous donation to support the listserv this month!

To make a contribution, click here ( http://pittsburgharts.pmailus.com/pmailweb/ct?d=P8eglQKdAAEAAAYWAATd8Q ) .

Thanks for your consideration!
