I have been remiss as far as updating PghGalleries.com over the year but I spent a few hours combing through the files and removed quite a few galleries which have either closed or are closing soon. The list includes Michael Berger Gallery, Fein Art Gallery, Fe Gallery among others. For those that don't know keeping a gallery afloat can be next to impossible without other revenue such as framing or other related retail sales so it's no surprise that more are closing. The traditional gallery model has largely been absent from Pittsburgh for quite some time or arguably never really existed here. Many venues in Pittsburgh, like the majority on Penn Avenue in Garfield, don't even have regular hours so that further complicates the goal of artists selling their work.
I wouldn't be surprised to see more hybrid stores like Wildcard in Lawrenceville where they sell craft products along with visual art on the walls or some adaptation on that with a possible flat file system where a larger array of art could be marketed to people. There will most likely always a be a handful of successful art galleries in Pittsburgh due to framing needs and other sales but it will never show the variety and depth of visual art here. And neither will art crawls or similar events with the regular presenters. I believe entrepreneurs on multiple levels will take Pittsburgh art to the next level with the right support.
Pittsburgh as a whole needs to look at how larger cities support their artists. Think of what the URA could do as far as allocating larger properties for artist studios to show their work instead of making The Buncher Company richer. Cities like Minneapolis and beyond have large factory buildings allocated for studios where customers can come by and see the work they want to purchase. Pittsburgh claims it is a city for artists but when it comes to visual artists the proof is just not there yet.

Future Tenant Pittsburgh Call for Artists, Installation Work

This is a non-paid opportunity and up to $100 may be provided for supplies.
Future Tenant is now taking applications for two window installations in the coming months. The next install would be over the holiday, which is great exposure for artists! We focus on innovative, local artists, and the window installation is a great opportunity to get noticed. Please, only very serious inquiries/applications need apply. Applications that are not complete will not be considered.
Detailed information below: **** Artistic Statement Future Tenant seeks to unite emerging artists from Pittsburgh and the surrounding area with community audiences in a non-traditional atmosphere that promotes new and unique ways of experiencing art. Future Tenant champions the accessibility of artistic experience, both for the exhibiting artist showing and the audience. Communication and Expectations Future Tenant is looking for artists to complete site-specific installations in our Downtown storefront windows. Future Tenant will provide 1,000 color, double-sided postcards for promotion of the window installation. Postcard designs may be designed by the artist, by Future Tenant, or through a collaborative effort. Future Tenant staff will handle all marketing for the installation. Additionally, we will provide up to $100 for supplies needed to complete the piece. We expect to communicate with the artist on a regular and timely basis to get progress updates and discuss any problems or major changes to the proposals. Communication may be done over the phone, by email, or in person. Proposal Guidelines Installations may be any medium, provided that they do not require supervision (video that needs to be stopped or started) or violate any city ordinances.
Prospective artists are asked to submit a proposal by following dates: For December 11, 2008 through January 7,2009 *Applications due by October 25, 2008 For Summer 2009 (exact dates TBD) *Applications due by March 25, 2009 Proposals should include: • Contact information, including current email address and phone number • Resume / CV • Exhibition title • Detailed project description • Estimated installation/de-installation time • Explanation of why project is a good fit with Future Tenant • Which date the artist prefers (see above) • Examples of previous work/website if applicable FT Window Dimensions Window Boxes 63 1/2" wide 77" tall 34 3/4" deep The right window has a 3’x3’ neon sign in it that may not be removed or obscured, but can easily be worked around. Additionally, the right window has a ledge that is roughly three feet deep and about “chair” level that may be utilized. Door 76 1/4" tall 36” wide Window Over Door 16" tall 36" wide
