The RAW Artists wagon rolled through town this past Thursday. I am skeptical of any organization or gallery who makes the artist pay up front without anything tangible in return. I didn't attend so I don't have that end of things to contribute. I certainly wouldn't call it a scam but it certainly should be looked at critically from the standpoint of the artist.
From a numbers standpoint the artists selling tickets account for roughly 480 of the 500 people who attended the Raw Artists Pittsburgh event. From the website and fakebook page I could identify a minimum of 24 artists so figuring each artist had to sell 20 tickets at $10 a piece that accounts for 96% of the total attendance which the Post Gazette identified as 500. It doesn't look good when you look at it from the artists' perspective when you consider the 24 artists and bands brought the majority of the people who attended. That's like paying a gallery and then having to bring all the people and either make them pay to get in or cover them yourself. And we haven't even gotten to sales, real exposure etc and the artist is down $200.
Maybe it will turn into something much bigger down the line but for now I would remain skeptical and would push for details as far as who and what they are bringing to the table.
The following is worth taking a look at below.
Galleries that ask you to pay to show with them, in most cases, are a red-flag.
It seemed to me that they were using artists to promote them instead of the
other way around.

Seth Graham is a visual artist from Buffalo, New York. He creates works using pen and ink that reflect ideas that bear significance to man’s place in nature, alchemy, death, and time among other subjects. He has developed his artwork and the style in which he produces it around the ideology that we are all part of one whole, and although we branch out and carve a niche for ourselves in life, we eventually succumb to the reclaiming hands of time and nature.
Graham’s works are often described as gritty and scratchy, but bear an elegance that demonstrates a great attention to detail. His drawings pull from a great number of sources, and each piece conveys an idea or bears a symbolic theme. The aesthetics of the pieces help to bring the message to the viewer, and at the same time, make the delivery artistic.
Graham’s mission in creating these works is to induce thought, and to prompt questions. There is a great deal of symbolism and metaphoric use of images in his work that he hopes will prompt the viewer to perhaps question the intent of such a depiction, and ultimately the world around them.
Seth Graham’s visual art will be on view Wednesdays and Saturdays at artspace105 from May 1-15, 2010. An opening reception will be held starting at 6 p.m. on Saturday, May 1st.

Gallery On Baum January 22 2010 Paper Exhibit Pittsburgh Art
Exhibit at The Gallery on Baum, and the opening is Friday, Jan. 22nd, 2010 from 6 - 9 p.m. The show is called (pa' per) , with a schwa instead of an "e", like in the dictionary, and it's featuring work made out of paper. (Yes ... the same night as Gallery Crawl. We are hoping people will still come!)

Obscurae: Photographs of Braddock, PA Show & Art Photography Lottery fundraiser
Fueled by the success of last year’s Art Lottery, the Braddock, PA project Obscurae will hold its second photography exhibition and fundraiser on Saturday, September 19, 2009. Benefiting the many continuing art and community revitalization efforts of this historic steel mill town, Obscurae features more than 75 donated and framed photographs of Braddock from over 25 photographers. Public viewing of the work, open to all and free of charge, begins 7pm Saturday; the art lottery commences at 8:30pm. Those attending Obscurae, held at UnSmoke Systems Artspace at 1137 Braddock Avenue, are invited to take part in the Portrait Booth Project, an interactive photo booth by Portland Oregon artist John Ryan Brubaker, and taste fresh-baked breads made in Braddock’s very own outdoor wood-fire community oven located next to UnSmoke Systems Artspace.
There is no charge to attend Obscurae and view the exhibition; visitors wishing to take home a work of art can purchase lottery tickets for $45 through the website, www.obscuraegallery.org, or for $55 at the door. In this time of economic turbulence there is more of a need for individual support. The lottery offers those in favor of Braddock’s many art and community projects the opportunity to contribute directly to their continuation. At the same time, supporters will be able to enjoy the exhibit, local food and drinks, the photo booth installation, AND leave with a limited edition framed art photograph. Photographs included in the lottery range from 8x10 to 17x22 and are mounted and framed using a variety of reclaimed materials. A Sneak Peak of the show is available for viewing online.
Change is underway in Braddock as groups working within and with the community bring renewed energy to a town that many wrote off. Artists, social entrepreneurs, community organizers, urban homesteaders and others with a pioneering spirit are inspired by the town’s potential for grassroots urban renewal and are using the inherent energy in Braddock to fuel their creativity. It is with this spirit that Obscurae views the maligned town – turning a photographic eye towards the borough’s oft-overlooked beauty amidst the former grandeur and “urban blight” that Braddock has come to represent for many in the Pittsburgh area.
Curated by Braddock residents Jodi Morrison and Jenny Fremlin, with special guest curator Jeanine Hall of UnSmoke Systems Artspace, Obscurae pays homage to Braddock’s unique post-industrial urban beauty. From the borough’s Victorian and industrial-era construction to particulars of its natural surroundings, each photograph captures a unique perspective of the town. Works are mounted and framed with found and reclaimed materials. In creating Obscurae, curators Morrison, Fremlin and Hall hope to encourage others to look deeper and appreciate the small wonders that drew them to Braddock.
How does the Art Lottery work?
Donated pieces are exhibited throughout the gallery, and pieces displayed will go home with a ticket holder that evening. Lottery participants are encouraged to browse the gallery before the lottery begins and compile a list of at least their first 25 favorites. The lottery begins with the first ticket being randomly chosen. When a ticket holder’s number is called, he or she has up to 60 seconds to choose a piece. Once a piece is selected it is removed and packaged for the winner. The lottery continues until all the ticket holders have chosen a one-of-a-kind framed photograph.
In addition to the show, Obscurae’s online gallery offers the chance to purchase frames and prints from both the 2008 and 2009 exhibitions. Proceeds from the gallery will support both the continued efforts in Braddock as well as the photographers who donated pieces for the exhibition. Some photographers participating in the show have also contributed additional pieces for purchase only available online. Visit www.obscuraegallery.org to view the work.

Holy shiatt there's a lot of Pittsburgh art events going on this weekend! Be sure to check out Bittersweet Harvest for a comprehensive line-up (right hand side for the schedule and each posting). On Friday I'll be checking out Unblurred on Penn Ave (including the newer fast fwd gallery at 3700 penn av, 5020 penn av, modernformations, most wanted and imagebox among others). A Friday after crawl party will be at Remedy (5121 Penn Ave Larryville) on the 2nd floor starting at 10pm where Casey Hallas is the organizer for the Incredible Hipster Machie gig (tip them well, no cover). More info at the fbook link here. Saturday will be Panza Gallery and Zombo (if not Friday or Sunday).
Would like to check Unsmoke in Braddock on Friday but not sure I'll make it.

The 15 Minutes Gallery is currently seeking artists and innovators to showcase recent work in both traditional and new media. To celebrate the synergy that exists between the art and tech communities in Pittsburgh, the Pittsburgh Technology Council is partnering with the James Gallery to create this one-of-a-kind exhibition.
DETAILS: The exhibition will open at the 15 Minutes Gallery on June 18, 2009 and run through September 1, 2009. The opening event will feature live music, cocktails, hor’s d’ouvres -- as well as speakers and presentations from some of Pittsburgh’s foremost art organizations and creative tech companies.
SUBMISSIONS: Participants are encouraged to submit artwork in any medium, including 2D, 3D and 4D, in any subject matter. Works that exemplify regional excellence and ingenuity will be selected for exhibition.

Don't miss out on the opening for Zombo's Big Hang Up this Friday January 9, 2009 from 6-11 pm. Our Second Annual "Big Hang Up" opens Friday, Jan 9th at 6pm.This is our mini "Art All Night" style event. This is where we open the floodgates to the gallery and invite YOU to bring YOUR artwork to hang in the gallery for the entire month of January. (Show Closes Jan.30).Bring any kind/style/media artwork (with label and price) to the gallery on Jan 8th and we will do the rest. (20% commission to the gallery on all sales). If you are interested in performing on either the opening or closing receptions, just let us know.

Edinboro Alumni Show at Sweetwater
Sewickley, PA
Sweetwater Center for the Arts is hosting a group exhibition of artists from Pittsburgh and the surrounding area who attended Edinboro University of Pennsylvania. The exhibition entitled Moths To A Flame is juried by John Lysak, artist and Professor of Fine Art at Edinboro University. Exhibition dates are February 5th - 28th, with the artist reception on February 7th from 6-8 pm featuring music by Jim Powell.

FREE AND EASY, TAKE 2
An exhibition of painting, mixed media work, dioramas, light installations and more by Laurie Trok, Laura Phillips, and Lauren Braun explores the use of found and recycled objects and their purpose in constructing new meaning.The opening on Friday, January 2, 2008 runs from 7pm to 10pm and features musical guests Casperous Vine (gypsy meets avant-classical, from Buffalo NY) and Mother Fun. Donation requested to support thebands.An over-21 afterparty will be held next door at the bar Envy, starting at 10 pm and featuring DJs Cutups and Mr Hamilton, and a performance by Ekofield. Everyone who attends the art opening (and is over 21) will receive a handbill giving them admission to the afterparty for only $1.
